Himax 2015 4100 or 5400?

(Happy Thanksgiving!)

Ok guys,

Need your thoughts. I want to run a 11-4.7 or 12-6 prop on a cc25 speed controller. I plan on ordering the himax motor and gearbox set with heat sink on it but can't decide between the 4100 or the 5400. I've heard that the 4100 gets too hot on the 12x6 prop and that it really hurts the motor to use that. Would the 5400 be a better choice. At this time I'm using all 3 cell tp1320 packs so I'd like to keep the same batteries too. This motor will be on a 40 inch 3dfoamy plane.

Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to order this soon!

I run a 2015-4100, 6.6-1 gbx, CC25, GWS 12x6, TP 1320 3S, in 16oz foamy. I have alot of time on my motor, no problems. The motor does get warm, but you can stand to hold onto it. I have also ran 10x4.7, 11x4.7 & 11x8 props, just depends on the how much weight I'm flying with, and how much punch I want.

I think the the higher KV motor would need either a 2 cell pack or smaller prop, or it would be to high of amps, and get hot etc: damage the motor.

Thanks FNG. I decided to go with the 4100. Everyone else is having good luck with them so It should be fine. I have an axi 2212/34 now and I was looking at getting a geared drive as well. I love the axi as it flies my 40 inch foamy well with a 11-4.7

The 5400 is really good with a 2S pack! On a 6.6 gear, with a 2S pack you can use the 12x6 easily, but you don't have a lot of thrust. On a 3S pack, the best you are going to be able to swing is a 10x4.7. On a 3S and a 10x4.7 you are going to be pulling about 14 amps! this is just about the limit for the 2015.

I am going to say that if you are wanting to use 3S go with the 4100! It will handle the 3S a lot better! BUT if you are even thinking of using a 2S pack go with the 5400, and just use different props for 2S and 3S use!!

I love my 5400, but I fly it mostly with 2S and 12x6. When I do use the 3S, I just prop it down to the 10x4.7.

All this being said, I have a scratch built 3DFoamy.com Cap that has 40 inches of wing. I am currently using my 5400 on it with a 10x4.7 and a 3S Kokam 1500. It flies beautifly!!!! I can generally hover at around 1/2 throttle. This being said, I am building another Cap for use with my HIMAX 2025-4200 on a MPI Metal 6.6 gear w/heatsink and will be swinging an 11x4.7 or 12x3.8! I am TRUELY looking forward to its flying!!!!!

Good Luck,

Reg

As everyone says, the 4100 is for 3S and the 5400 is for 2S. As you are using 3S packs you're right to go with the 4100

Hey

These guys are telling the truth. A 5400 on three cells with a big prop will burn up. 5400 go w 2S. 4100 go w 3S.

Experience!!! It is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!

i think the best to use if you're using a 5400 is an 11x3.8 and 3s. I've flown a 5400 on 2S with 12x6 and that was good too. My current temps with the 3s and 11x3.8 are always 115 degrees. Great Setup!

I'm flying an EFlite Tribute with an EFlite 400 4200 brushless. Thunder 1320 3cell and Electrifly 1500 3cell. Using the GWS D gear, (6.6/1) CC25 ESC and GWS 9x7 prop, I seem to be having good luck. I don't know that much about the amps I'm pushing though, and haven't measured amperage. Does anyone have suggestions on if I should try another prop? I have some 10x8, 10x4.7, 11x8, and the stock 12x6. Which would be best to get a good hover as well as other performance?

I'm flying the E-flite Ultimate with the E-flite 370 5400 - 6.6 stock box - CC 25amp speed - GWS 9x4.7 and 3s 1320's .
After about 10 min of flite time the motor is cold and the battery is just starting to get warm .
I have about 30 flites on this set up and have not had any problems . The smaller prop is nice cause i don't have to fight the short wing every time i add power . It will hover at less than 1/2 and go streight up like a rocket when i hit the go stick !
I think it hovers and rolls better than it did with the 4100 !
Smaller props are cheeper to buy !
