Clever boy
I got this new plane from Powerline hobbies, http://powerlinehobbies.com/, it's called a clever boy and it comes with everything for 100 bucks. So I started to put it all together and did all the wiring changes that needed to be made and just for kicks wanted to see if it hovered....I let it go and it held up for a few seconds pretty well...I haven't flown it yet and I really want to get into 3D. I put this post up to see weather this could be modified to go 3D, I was thinking of upgrading the batter to Li-po after flying it with regular
Nickels. the aileron surfaces are the full length of the wing but only 1/2" wide.....the rudder has a larger surface and the elevator has an average size surface....is it possible to use this plane as a 3D With the Li-po set up? Right now it is running all stock stuff (brushed motor). Thanks! |
RE: Clever boy
Seems to me like it would make a perfect 3D project plane.
I would start off with some MUCH larger ailerons. Get rid of the 1/2" ailerons. Go with some tapered ailerons 2" at the wing tip to 2 1/2" at the fuselage. 40-50 degrees of throw, and about 60% expo...yeah that should about do it. :D It will be a snaprollin' monst'r Drop a servo in each wing, program it for flaperons....WHAHOOO! Rudder looks ok. Might need a little more elevator though. Then slap a good hot brushless motor in it and a lipo. It should 3D just fine. That long straight leading edge wing ought to work good. Definatly an OUTDOOR plane though. Aint gonna be flying that thing indoors. |

Here is the plane:
I don't want to really mess with the ailerons....I think I was off on the windth they are bigger than 1/2 inch they are close to one inch wide.....It wants to hover on Nickels....but if I take 2 or 3 ounces by changing it to Li-po's I think it will def hover.... |
RE: Clever boy
Sweet!!!! Let us know how it does.

RE: Clever boy
Is it an ARF?

RE: Clever boy
Yes it's an ARF...you can get it at PowerlineHobbies.com

Alot of how a plane performs 3D manuvuers is how much control surface & control surface deflection you have.
Try it out first before you go ripping the ailerons off--- The torque created from the motor spinning the prop tends to make the plane go into a torque roll, the plane just spins with the torque. Lack of control surface and how much deflection you have can make it very difficult to learn to hover because of this. Also if the plane has only enough power to "sort of" hover- You are asking for trouble---If you make a mistake and you need to get out of it chances are pretty high something bad will happen because you couldnt pull out. It is a good looking plane and if you made some mods I belive you could get it to do 3D. Be carefull when you move to a LiPo batt. If you overload your ESC. with too many amps bad things can happen. |
