Tensor or flatout, and best setup to begin with?
 

I am looking into getting into electrics, been into 3d flying with gas for years now.

which would be better, a flatout of the tensor 4d, or should I just get some plans and make my own to begin with, I am able to get depron foam out here from anywhere from 1 to 6 mm.

As for engines, I am looking at an outrunner by e-flite, mpi or hi-maxx, or go with a rimfire? From what others are saying on other posts, I would probably go with a e-flite 20 amp speed controller.

as for batteries, maybe a kokam 3 cell or 2 cell 700 mah li-po, or e-tec 3s1p 700 mah, is the greatplanes batteries any good?

I would suggest the Yak 54F from E-flite.

I would just get some plans..I love the Foamy Factory planes..Im flying the Mini Yak now ,just go find a parking lot and fly..Cant beat the price and really does not take that long to build these foamies.. JMO I like to cut and build so maybe not for everybody.
BTW I get the mini Yak KE'ing sooooo sloww ..

Go with the 6mm foam 3mm is just to thin.

Thanks for all the replies. I will look at at plans on a few sites and find something I like and then start to build from there.

Any suggestions for engines and batteries to go with?

The Himax Outrunners are on sale here at www.bmkdesigns.net and I would go with a 3-cell over a 2-cell battery. I have not heard to much about the Greatplanes batteries but most of the cheaper batteries seem to only be 5c. I would go with Kokam, E-Tec or Thunderpower for the battery.

BTW I have a 16 ounce plane running on a Himax 2812-1080, a 3-cell 1320 TP, APC 10x4.7 prop, and get 15 minutes. Mostly wide open and plenty of power

Save yourself the time and trouble and go with an AXI they are a little more expensive because of the mounts you can get for them but in the end you will be 10000 times happier.

http://www.hobby-lobby.com/brushless_axi.htm Here they are listed by the weight of the plane to make finding the right one easy but if you are going to be building just foamies Look at either the 2212/26 or the 2808/24 those two motors will handle any foamie with ease. You will need the optional Mounting kit at hte bottom of the pages or you can go to http://www.topcreationsrc.com/ and get stock mounts like the gearbox motors use these are pretty slick and easy to put on any plane.

The thing I like about the Himax is that it comes with the ability to firewall mount or stick mount without having to buy anything else. However with that being said i plan on buying a Axi 4210 series motor for a 56" Corsair I am building right now.:D

I have one of the new Cap 580 Flatouts and am debating what motor to use. Why do you think the AXIs are worth the price difference? How does the equivalent AXI compare with the Park 370 Outrunner from E-Flite? I have one on my Tensor and it seems to be a fine little piece of equipment. I don't mind paying extra for something that's truly "better", but I'd like to understand what makes the AXIs "better".

IF you have a Flatout just get the Rimfire outrunner. The mount and set up for that motor is great. The Rimfire motor is very nice on these planes. Ton of power with a 3S 640mah Lipo & APC 9x3.8" SF..

I had bad luck with the Himaxx....

went with a Hacker A20... it is wonderful!!

Isn't the A20-20L a little on the large side for this plane? It's about a .5 oz heavier then some of the others. They make a slightly smaller model.

Oh, yes, sorry, was thinking on the wrong size... BUT, you cant go wrong with a hacker or axi!
