cheap brushless outrunner setup Please help!
 

Hello. I've never had an electric, but have lots of experience flying glow 3D planes. I'm looking into building a flat foam electric and am looking for advice on motor, ESC, battery, charger combos. I also don't have much money to blow, so I'm trying to do this on a budget. Here is what I've found: From balsapr.com, the BP-21 outrunner motor and BP 18A ESC. Both of these can be had for $65 total. From Tower Hobbies, the Great Planes 11.1V 720mAh Lipo for $32 and the small Great Planes field charger for $25. Would this make a decent power combo for 3D flat foam flying? Also, which prop would be best and what extras am I leaving out? Thank-you.

1st you need to figure out what plane you want then come ask what you need for that particular plane, and we can hook you up.

if you go with a shockflyer (highly recomended) you can go with a 10 dollar cd rom kit from [link]http://www.gobrushless.com[/link] and a small 10 amp speed control. as for the battery, that is a good choice. does that greatplanes charger charge lipos? im not to familiar with it. I woul rather see ya invest in the hobbico quick feild charger....this can charge 2 lipos at once (you will eventually have more than 1 lipo....believe me ;)) and its worth every penny of the 55 dollars...

I'm thinking of building a flat foamy similar to the 3DX at foamyfactory.com with about 300 sq. in. wing area. Here's the links to the setup I was thinking of (motor-ESC combo, Lipo battery, and charger). Could someone tell me if this would be a good choice for someone on a budget wanting to try 3D electric flight?

Okay, the BP-21 is a pretty high-RPM motor. It's rugged as heck, with a thick steel bell, and comes with a decent aluminum mount. However, it is wound such that it will pull a surprisingly high number of amps. On small Lipoly packs like you're describing, it is limited to about an 8" prop, and that's not the greatest for 3D, but it will work. The BP-18 esc works, but it's notchy and makes it very difficult to hover. I have one in our shop "loaner" R3D, and there's no throttle setting to hover, just "climb" and "drop" with nothing in-between. Maybe some other examples are better.

Also with the battery you want, its max discharge rate is 5.8 amps, and the esc uses 15 amps.

Check out Hobby-Lobby.com There's a flat foamy for $20 and brushless motor for $30. I've got one, building it when i get a speed control.

Yep the HL Yak and the esskay motor.... I have a few of the Yaks... LOVE THEM...

really fly nicely and very easy to build!!
haven't flown the motor (I like my Hackers) but have heard nothing but good about them...

Also...I'm going with the great planes BL-8 ESC and the polycharge, that thing is little! Right now the planes a pile of foam. May make a build thread. My first foamie too.

Okay. It looks like the Esskay 400XT outrunner and the Great Planes BL-8 brushless ESC would be a good economical choice. For a battery, it looks like the Kokam 11.1V 640mah would be good and the Great Planes Polycharger for $24.99. Could someone give comments on this setup before I order? I'm trying to keep the setup as simple as possible. I'm looking at scratch building a flat foamy (around 200-300 sq. in. wing area) similar in size to the Yak foamy already mentioned. I just want something small and simple to fly at the local park. Do any of you see any major problems with this setup? Thank-you.
