Help with Flatout Flatana
Hi, I just got a Flatana for my birthday. I was wondering if the Kokam Cellpro 640 mAh Superhigh Discharge pack will work for it. I am only 15 (not much money) and so i am going to use the stock motor (or does anyone have a rimfire motor that works and wants to get rid of it?) I also plan on getting a Futaba 4exa radio w/micro flight pack. the c-12 esc, and idk what charger. my dad and me might split the money and get a nice one like the triton or something. Well I would appreciate it if you guys could help!!!:D

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
What is the discharge rate on the pack? if it's somewhere near 15 you should be perfectly fine. I just got a cheap charger for mine, ot does the trick. It's the Polycharge, I beleive it's 25 bucks on tower. Good luck with the plane, and hopefully you don't have problems with the hinges when you assemble it! If you do, the best tip I got was to heat the clips, with a lighter or anything you have that'll work. Hopefully it wont be a problem though!

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Go to hobbypeople.net and get the Wattage charge it all sport. $70 and'll do Nicad, Nimh and Lipo at up to two amps. Plus you don't need a 12V power supply.
http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/130116.asp As for the battery, I don't know about that specific one. One last thing, get a couple extra of those brushed motors while your at it cause they'll burn out after about 20 flights. I'm 15 too, and had a Flatana too until a tree ate it and I designed my own plane and dropped the gear, hinges, carbon and everything else from the Flatana into it. I started out with the stock motor and after a couple months went up to the Rimfire. Easilly doubled my power. The stock motor will hover it at about 2/3 throttle and climb vertically, but slowly. THe Rimfire will hover her at around a third, and shoot vertical like an Estes rocket. Definately worth the money once you get some. Have fun with your plane. |
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
If you plan to stay in the electric hobby it is a very wise decision to buy a nice charger up front that can do several functions.
I have (3). (2) I never use anymore. A good bit of wasted money double/triple buying. Not to mention the safer li-po charging functions available on todays chargers. Having said that I have watched electrics rc stuff improve at such a speed its hard to keep up The 640 will work but the TP 730 is a better choice, lighter...more run time. But if 640 is on hand then it will be fine and no more cost. This is just one site for price http://www.toddsmodels.com/Lithium/thunderpower.htm Go with the little screamer or other like brushless rather than several brushed motors. More power and longer lasting by a long shot. Have fun and pratice patience building the thing. Do a thread search here for hints or www.rcgroups.com ; more electric discusions. One that I think is a must is micro adjstable rod connectors intead of a fixed rod length that GP supplies. Easier set up and trim. Its rather a pain to build but a blast to fly. Rather tough for those not so perfect landings too. I like mine a bunch with a e-flight park 370 1080 and the TP 730. HS 55's and a HS 56 for the ailerons. I had a centering issue that was annoying with one 55 controlling both ailerons. Hitec HS 56 pretty much cured that. Cheers Michael |
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Thanks for the info! Does anyone know how the Futaba 4exa radio is? Also the Micro Receivers and Servos that come with it?
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
The discharge rate on the batt. pack is 15C. I think it will work, it is 10 buck cheaper than the Electrifly one made for the flatouts. What is the runtime with the stock motor???
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
I did have problems with the hinges, i emailed great planes and they said they would see what they can do to help. I gave them my address and hopefully they give me new ones!
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Runtime on the stock motor will be around 6-7 minutes. Not great, but good enough for me. Those hinges are a pain, but worth the effort in my opinion. If I were you, I'd get a digital 6 channel radio. You won't regret it, and these will fly any plane you ever get. I know how bad you want to get a plane in the air, but if you can afford it get either a:
Futaba 6EXAS http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXJUV7**&P=7 Airtronics VG6000 http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXEUY4**&P=7 This is what I have and I absolutely love it. Got to love the timer on it. Or... Spektrum DX6 http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByC...ProdID=SPM2460 The latter is the most expensive but also the best value and can fly helis. But has no timer. I love the S75 servos too, and I've run four different brands of servos and they're the best. Also, that battery is probably the same thing as the Electrifly battery, just under its original brand name. |
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
That battery should work fine. When I had problems, I also e-mailed them, and wasn't in the best of moods when I did so, I got an e-mail the next day saying that they had shipped me an entire new plane, which I happen to have destroyed today :( Off to the hobby shop for some depron, CF, hinge tape, and some more glue. I actually bought a JR 6102 with ultra lite gear. I think you can get it for about 200 bucks on horizon, I paid 240 at my LHS a while ago. I love it, it was well worth the extra money. Think of it this way, if you buy a nicer Tx now, you wont need to buy a new one all the time, just get a nice one, the 6102 can handle 10 plane/heli's! You may also want to check the price on the electrifly batteries, my LHS just put out a huge bin of them for 29.99 a piece!

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
the flatout flatana is one of the better ones of the pack, did you guys have that much problem with the hinges, heres a way to try, but all the little plastic c's ont the rod then fit them into the foam wing, then glue them on both sides it works very well and is fast. the 15c discharge rate is not needes you could be fine with less, 15c is most likely a burst, where your not really going to draw 15x your batterys voltage half of the time. i would not go with a rim fire motor. the weith to kv's arent rated well a 1000 i think if your going to spend the money go with an ai or even an e flite 370 1320kv, it will do the trick
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
You do need a 15C pack if you're running the Rimfire, but the stock motor will work with 10C. I started off with a 850 10C pack which worked with the stock motor, but when I got the rimfire it lost power at anything much over 2/3 throttle, and would cut out. I got the Electrifly 15C 640 pack and that went away.
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
yes im sorry if you were goin to use the rimfire motor you would need that battery of a 15c burst
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
I got the C-10 at my LHS (Hobby Town USA) for only 15 bucks! It is so tiny! Now i am looking for the other equipment i need for it.

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Hi guys,
sorry to interrupt right in you guyses conversation, but I am also getting problem with my flatana. I ve read that one of you guys is setup with the rimfire setup. Well so am I but the problem is that I can hardly pull a hover a full throttle. I ve got a gws 6ch receiver with all hs-55 servos, with the new pheonix-18 esc. I am running an 8.6 prop, and a kokam 700 mah 3c battery. Yes i have fully, i mean fully charged my battery pack. I ve also tried a 9.6, no progress there. The only prop i<ve had progress with was with an apc 11x4.7 prop. I could hold a hover for a few seconds, but thats all, i needed my battery at full power to be able to do that. Do any of you guys see a problem with my setup? if so please i need the help, i feel very disapointed with the power I have. Thanks LeBlanc |
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
leblanc, try a 9x3.8 prop, it is plenty and will not pull near as many amps, therefore conserving battery power. What is your weight? Looking at your equipment, it's heavy. I'm running a Rimfire, bl-8 esc, electrifly 640 3-cell and apc 9x3.8 prop with crazy vertical and 15 min runtime.
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Get a different battery. You need at least 15C and I'm not sure that pack's giving you that. Try a Thunder Power battery. I had the same problem till I got a new battery.
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Well i got Hitec HS-55's at my LHS the other day, and i am using a hitec electron receiver and my dads JR radio. I got it all set up last night and it is suprisingly light. I "drove" it around the house and it has a lot of power with the stock motor. Cant wait till spring!
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Why wait until spring??? Test fly that badboy in your local High School Gym!!!!:D
|
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
i would, but our gym just got a brand new floor, but maybe the mayville state wellness center will work they have a HUGE gym and it is made of some wierd floor material that wont get wrecked.

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
I am also 15 years old, and I have been flying for a year. I have a shock flyer edge 540, and am buying the flatana soon. How does it fly? I am good enough to handle extreme and 3D aerobatics. A reasonably good motor for a small cost is the esskay 400. It is at hobby-lobby for 20$, and i run a 15C 640 mAH 3s Kokam battery, H55's, and a BL8 esc with a apc 10*3.8. It hovers at a little over half throttle; and that is pretty darn good, considering that i live around 5600 ft. altitude. And unlimited vertical is reached at a little over 3/4 throttle. Definatly worth some of the cost.
Jack P.S: I know how you feel north dakota kid, money can sometimes be tight, but it is all worth it to me. I had to wait around 5 months to finish my foamie, because things keep comming up; such as my battery losing a cell in my brand new U Can Do .46 and smashing to the ground, over 500 dollars in it[:@]. Anyways tell me how it flys. |
RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
I'm new to the electric planes so I'm still learning. I did see this motor at Tower hobbies web sight but didn't know if it was any good or of it would work in a GP Foamy. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLVG8&P=0 I thought I'd post it for anyone looking to save a couple of bucks. Its 10 bucks cheaper than a Rimfire with about the same values.

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
I've got my Flatana flying with the brushed motor for now. It flys great! It will hover at 2/3 throttle no prob. It tracks good for a foamy also. Ive flown it in kind of windy conditions so i am not wringing it out yet, but so far its Awesome! The hovering is easy is you set the center of gravity back farther. It also will harrier pretty well. For landing, i just bring it into a harrier down low, and it just plops right into the grass. I hope this helps, it really is a great flying plane. Oh, clip the landing gear. It will rip your fuselauge if you dont. I reinforced the landing gear area with some 1/32 in ply and it really stiffens it up.

RE: Help with Flatout Flatana
Hey,
I just got back flying my GP reflection. I think my CG is a little off to make hovers etc... But I found it to make awesome KE harriers. With the rimfire, it has unlimited vertical with 1/2 throttle I'm sure that flatana will hover at 2/3 cuz its so light. its like 3 oz. lighter than reflection. My friend also had reflection with brushed system, and it didnt work as great. He could hover only at full throttle lol. I hope ur having a blast! Paul |
