How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
How the heck do I hinge this plane!!???? My question is exactly that, how do I hinge the katana S from 3dfoamy? I tried hinge tape, and I'm gonna give that one more shop, but it just doesn't seem very solid. PAcking tape, loud when hinges move, sloppy looking. Should i try CA hinges? Like the ones you cut a slot, stick the special paper in then put a drop of ca on it? I'm really confused, please help! The last thing is about my elevator, the carbon rod that is suuposed to be put put ina little wood thnkg, then glued to the elevator, well, I screwed that p, so I had to cut a little whole by the elevator, then I joined them through there, gluing the ca rod on top of the two elevator halves, will this work ok? I'm a little worried and might try to reinforce it, thanks.

Hinge tape should work fine. Put it on the top while giving it full down deflection, then fold it up and put it on the bevel.

RE: How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
The Blenderm tape from 3M is great. It's sold at the LHS under one of the brand names like DUBro. It sticks very well on foam. On the roll it says 3M blenderm.

I don't know, the hinge tape doesn't seem to stick very well at all(it's not dubro), I tried plain old packing tape, and that seems to be working great. One more question, when I power up holding the plane in my hand, both the rudder and elevator flutter slightly, is this a huge problem? Should I try to put some cf rods on them to reinforce them? Also, one of my ailerons goes up slightly higher then the other, is the going to majorly affect it's flight performance? Thanks

RE: How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
You should be fine. If you can get rid of the tail feather flutter real easilly, do it, otherwise it won't effect flight performance. As for your aileron, it's not a major deal on foamies, but it is best to have both your ailerons level.

Thank you, I think I may have installed the servo arm a little off center, so i'll look into that.

I have used 3M Packaging Tape very succesfully. I also tack it down with a covering iron set at low/med temp. Works great for me. Make sure to scuff the surfaces where the tape will be with fine sandpaper.

Whoa! I found a great altenative to hinge tape! Du-Bro sell little plastic hinges that you install like ca hinges, but are litterally a hinge. They worked great, my new favorite way to hinge a plane!

HI,
If memory serves correctly it's DUB915 I use the 3M Blenderm here in the UK. It's only downside is that it leaves a sticky residue on film coverings if you try to remove it. It's upside is that it won't crack or split with age. Regards, Dave |
RE: How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
If memory serves you? Wow thats quite a memory!
Also, the hinges I was reffering to are part # DUB119. Great product! |
RE: How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
Have you tried floppy disks? the internal material works really well, you can intall them as a CA one, and the outside plastic works fine to make control horns and it is dead cheap!

Thanks for the information......

I used the Robart mini-hinge points on my Pro Giles and they worked great.

Flyfalcons, I read your thread about the theft of your trailer and all your planes. Hows that search been going, any luck? I heard gus say a lot of great ideas as to how to find it, and was just curious about your search.

I find it hard to believe that Dubro Hinge tape doesnt stick....blenderm sticks to Anything and Everything. I even use it to seal hinge gaps on my nitro planes. Works good for taping canopies down too.
Denatured Alcohol removes any residue left by the tape on most surfaces...just dont use it on foam. |
RE: How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
I think the the tape that didn't stick for me was made by Graupner, i think that was the name...

RE: How the heck do I hinge this plane!!????
Old thread, but I'll reply anyway. Blenderm is great hinge tape. 3M actually makes it for medical use, it sticks well to skin, and is used for holding bandages on after surgery. You can get it at any medical supply store for about 1/3 or less of what your hobby shop will sell it for. I bought 4 rolls for less than what 1 cost at the LHS.
