Great Planes 25% Yak 81" 12-lb, seen on Fly3D Magazine

Your crash was caused by the Flutter, how big of a gap was there in the hinge line? I had a CAP do the samething. I got it slowed up but the servo's were stripped and it rolled over on it's back and went in.

my cg. was great where it was exactly dead center on the wing tube and yes i bought clear monokote and gap sealed both sides on all flight surfaces this was the second flight and only done 4 full 3-d manuvers which were inverteted flat spins at about 200' i'm lost! seemed to be a gentile giant when i landed it on the first flight, never got the chance to do it on a second it will hover with a thor engine which is a crrc pro after i made the ignition change with a mejzlik 20-8 i e-mailed western hobbies they have the parts to repair my engine. new case, cylinder, all gaskets and ect. $120.00 great running engine all it needed was the new ignition it was turning 8700 with that prop

my wife actually wept more than i did! perhaps she found out that i had $1600.00 tied up in it i'm afraid to tell here about my wildhare edge 540t with $750 in the da and smoke pitts muffler, the 460 i have in the plane the 600 in servos.ect i'm not sure if i got hit or what but after that kind of loss i'm thinking 2.4 ghz. channel 32 is what i fly on never been shot down in 18+ years that kinda loss has rejuvenated my way of thinking on RADIO EQUIPMENT it's really great that there are people who strive to exell in products in this hobby/sport so much of what we enjoy derives from inovated technoligies developed for the military, civilian, ect interest!!! i really appreciate the way things have progressed since the 80's am to fm,to gold sticker was all we had to do. shoot cost me what seemed to be a fortune to what we have now 300+ oz.torque servos totally un heard of back then! honestly i really think my crash was my fault not due to dumb thumbs but thinking that 88oz. torque at 6v. would hold the flight surfaces. i know that the instructions said i believe was 97/98 minum they were not metal geared! if this was the case i have trully learned my lesson it will never happen again!!it seems the old school has caught up with me!!!giants then are not giants now when the radio is concerned thanks to those who felt my pain but i will recover and learn from my lack of technoligy and become stronger mor intuitive (no cheap &^%$) when i have that kind of money in since i'm not a million aire you'all take care i'll be back

Crash99,
I am anxious to hear your flight report with the OS 1.60 and wish you good luck. I am thinking about putting a 1.60 in mine to get get lower wing loading.
I remember your earlier problem with your wing. Just as a precautionary note, I tighten my wing nuts as hand tight as possible then tighten them another 1/4 turn with pliers. As I said in an earlier post I found one of my wing bolts loose (about 1 inch) when I was gassing up for a flight (I couldn't believe it landed). I also put some clips through the wing guides just in case.
Good Luck!

something else which i thought was a great idea come a wildhare plane i have take a 1/16" drill bit and drill a hole in the wing alignment dowels and put a 1/16 clip pin in it a good saftey backup!!!! you can get them at any tractor supply if youhave one in your area just try to get it as close as you can to the fuse!!

mwhar760,
Hang in there Dude! I feel your pain, especially where the wife is concerned. If there is one thing that I have learned about this hobby is that persitence pays off.
I have had my share of growing pains with this plane. Not that there is anything wrong with the plane (well a few more more sq inches of wing area wouldn't hurt) but it was such a leap going from "40" size planes to a large gasser. Vibration just rattles everything loose. I have suffered dead sticks and have had trouble learning to tune a gasser. My gas tank stopper seal split and gas ran all through the inside of the fuse which melted the foam - GP took pity on me and sold me a new fuse for 1/2 price. I use a better stopper now. I have replaced all my langing gear due to rough landings. I have found my wing bolts loose after landing, I lost an aileron from a loose servo screw. On and on but I am learning and overcoming these problems and encourage you to do the same.
I would not go with spread spectrum yet - that technology is too new for me. I watched a couple planes go down using it a couple weeks ago. But, are you using PCM? The gas guys at my club really stressed that technology.
I hope you find out what the cause of the crash was. My ailerons were fluttering for awhile at high speed until I tightened up my linkages. My Hitec 645 servo gears are a little loose too, but handle it. If I would do it over again I might buy digitals. If your servos were s undersized and you found them stripped, then that may be it.
Good Luck!

yes i kinda really agree with you they were probably to small but i wanted the digial advantage
zero dead center, more precise in which analog lacked in hence fourth $117.00 a piece jr 8611a i will use! no less till i've and learn if not by your own mistakes others(don't know who to quote that from but you get what i am saying better cheaper is not always better)

When my wings started to fultter, I had no real control over my plane. When she rolled right I pulled back thinking I will just get it closer to the ground and place it into a hover. Letting the rudder take the dammage. As you can see the rudder was untouched.
When you place the clear monokote in the gap both sides on all flight surfaces. Do you need to place it on both sides or just one side?
I will have video on this test flight. I wish I had video of my last attempt.
Thanks

Here is how my GP Yak54 is looking right now.... I'm working on the bottom. I need to finish the part of the logo that goes on the fuselage.
I include a pic of the receiver I'm using on my Yak and on my other models like my Raptor30, it is a XPS XtremeLink Rx. I'm using the XPS module for my Futaba 9C. I have only been using it for the past month but so far it is a dream. Perfect handling and not a single glitch.
The CG on my Yak is currently at 6 inches from the edge of the wing, which is 7/8 inch farther to the back of the model than what the manual recommends.

Well, the Yak now has 14 12+ minute flights on her, I just put the last two on this afternoon. The maiden went smooth with not a click of trim needed. This is my first gas plane so I didn't know what to expect. Yeah, it handles somewhat like the GP RealFlight Sim 3.5 Yak. The planes a real floater if you want it to.Guys at the field are impressed by how slow it can fly without stalling. I am very happy with the handling. The FPE 2.4 (bought used from FPE)is plenty of power for me spinning a 3W wood 20 X 8 prop. ..yes, it will hover, which I exit by full down elevator, let the nose drop and fly away. I balanced it at the suggested point in the manual, somewhere around 5+ inches I believe. I had to add Lead below the engine to get that balance. I will remove lead a bit at a time to see how it likes tail weight. Elevator servos HS 645MG analog are in the rear and ailerons. Single HS5645MG digital mounted midship. It lands on three wheels and looks pretty doing it. I had issues range checking it. I started with a Futaba 9C with PCM reciever. Would not give me a satisfactory range check (90 Ft,antenna all the way down per manual). I moved antenna outside of plane, moved reciever out of plane, moved batteries, unpluged servos and still no luck with engine running. Swaped reciever for a PPM to see just how bad the problem was. It was bad. Funny thing, with the PCM reciever during range tests on several occasions the left aileron would drop full deflection down, remain there motionless for several seconds, and return to nuetral. FPE suggested I wrap the spark plug cable and/or module box in aluminun foil and see what happens. Range checks got much better. I replaced the old C+H with a new C+H ignition with metal cap. Well, range check went from 70 ft to almost 90 ft. Some guys would say thats just fine but I wasn't satisfied and changed the 72 to a DX7 Spektrum w/AR7000 reciever. Could get range checks out to 150 foot and even more. All flights have been with the Spektrum system. For the rest of the season I'll get familiar with the plane, and practice the 3D stuff with my profile! I'like to keep this one for a while....................

Thanks for the great flight report!!!!! My plane is still in the assembly stage, but you have definately inspired me to get her in the air. This summer has been blistering hot and evenings or weekends have been few at the field for me so far this year.
Congrats again!!!

Hi,
I was cutting my cowl to fit and it look like the muffler for DL50 won't fit unless I cut to fit round part of the muffler anybody have picture of a DL50 installed. Let me know. I don't really want to destroy the side of the engine cowl.
Any advice or picture will be appreciated.

I decided to cut anyway, it wasn't to bad I will eventualy download some pics but it ok like that didn't want to spend $100 on a new muffler.
Should be ready to go for the weekend

Pictures of your DL-50 install would be great.
I too would be interested in seeing how much to cut to get the stock muffler installed. All the rear-dump Pitts mufflers I could find are all around $100. The only thing I can figure is that they are mostly hand-made (labor charges) and they don't sell very many of them so they are unique.
How did you hook up the choke? If manual, the way it snaps open is good, but seems too stiff for a normal servo.
Did you leave the spring return on the throttle?

I'm happy with the instalation, as for the choke just a control arm attach with a bent control rod that about it with a plastic clevis. And I left the spring return just for safety.

I'm glad you guys like it, thanks!.
I bought a CF landing gear from GraphTechRC but it looks like if I install it I will loose about one inch of separation between each axle. Also they are shorter!, I can't go any lower cause I'll break more props. I was told that these guys were good but this landing gear is crap.
Anybody knows other places that sell CF landing gears for the GP Yak54?
Thanks,
