i have a h9 1.20 cap 232 that im wanting to fly imac/3d with my target weight is 11-11.5 Lbs. What engine would be the better choice for this plane. Saito 180 or a moki 1.8
Im looking for reliability and quick throttle response for down on the deck hovering and a some what descent run time at least 15min. Also what prop would you recomend for both and what size fuel tank?
What about a 3 blade or 2 blade?
Thanks

The Moki 180 is a powerful but heavy engine. It swings a 18 x 10 prop with ease and produces 20 -21lbs of thrust. It's too big for that plane. The big Moki's can be difficult to start sometimes but reliable, I have a Saito and love it, I would say it's the closest naturally aspirated engine to the power and throttle response to a YS. I have had YS engines as well.
I fly 3d and am obsessive about the weight (wing loading) of an aerobatic plane, so I do know a bit about plane set ups.
I read a review on the cap and they had a Saito 150 in it but added 11oz to the nose. [:'(]
Hmmm... sounds like the plane might naturally be tail heavy, I would never ad dead weight to a plane, move the engine forward, put the battery up front, move the undercarriage forward.... anything to gain the correct c of g without adding dead weight.
Sounds like you want to put in a saito 180 @ 2.2lbs or a OS 160FX @ 2.4lbs. If you put in the Moki it it would be .7lbs heavier than the OS.
I had a Moki 180 in a 78" Edge Hanger 9 and it was a lot heavier than they stated. It said 11.5 to 13lbs, it turned out to be 13.8lbs. The plane had plenty of power, prop hang on 1/2 to 2/3 power but you really felt the weight on slow speed aerobatics and landing speed was fast.
It would have been a good plane if it was 11.5lbs.
If I were you I would weigh the plane and everything else with an accurate digital kitchen scale so you know what it weighs, just minus the the engine.
I would say that you wouldn't want an engine heavier than 2.4lbs... Then again you could spend more money and get a YS 140L or DZ...
They are mega engines!! When they're brand new they are very reliable and the most powerful engine for their size and only 2lbs, the 140DZ is more powerful than the Saito 180.
All of this is just my opinion, I've learnt a lot since I've started this hobby, but my obsession for building light planes comes from my work in motor racing.
Hope this helps..
I find this site very helpful.
Cheers

Is that the 25% Hangar 9 CAP?
Check this thread out. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_31...tm.htm#3139449
I have the same plane. I ended up putting a moki 1.50 on it... What a great motor. Fits the bill well....... lighter than the 1.8 and lots of power
here is a link to the moki 1.50 www.justengines.unseen.org it has a smaller case than the 1.8 moki. the 1.8 and the 2.10 are the same size motor case.

SAITO 180 or OS 160 or YS 140. Anything else will be either too heavy or not enough power. Those are the only two to consider. The Moki is a very strong engine, but it is very heavy. 11.5 is a very iffy weight. It will be tough to get. But if you use somehting other than the Saito YS or OS, then you WILL be above it.
