I built mine AT the LHS here , yesterday. With a crowd watching. Slowed me down a bit, but some people learned a few things.

Awesome model, can;t wait to fly it. I witnessed ALL of the EF 300's go out the door, with a near fight for the last one.

The Tail logo really had people talking. Very coool.

I trimmed the CF Elevator tube to get a little closer gap on the counterbalances....that really was the only "mod" I did.

The cooling holes on the bottom of the plane do need to be cutout. Someone should post a pic. I can;t right now.

Rd and Drum, I know what you mean, the only new planes I am buying are EF's. The research into the best planes are done for you, why not take advantage of it.

Alrighty then... hooked up the power and ran some juice through the Wattmeter...

3 Cell Thunderpower TP2100 and T
p2100ProLite packs...

EDITED FOR FULL CHARGED BATTERY

27.7 amps full throttle and 250-260 watts... not too bad at all... though I was hoping for 300 watts or 150 wpp.

ProLites make a BIG difference... the gen1 TP2100s can't take the load and you can see the voltage drop pretty quick... so ProLites or other High Discharge packs are a must.

O.K., an update for the prior test I updated my prior post too...

the TP2100 ProLite I used was brand new... and therefore not topped off...

I just did another test and am getting 250 watts+ at 27.7 amps with consistent voltage...

Nope... should I have?

In fact, maybe you could share how you go about conditioning a new pack... what do you use to discharge/charge?

Did I miss it? what prop was that with? watts that low tell me it's the 11X5.5...should do better with the 12X6.

I have a AXI 2820/12. i wonder if it would be good for it.. actually the motor is in my EF mini 3d right now.

Maudib. there is no conditioning on Li-Pos but TP recomends to discharge it the first time in a series of short flights at a couple of min a piece.

Yeah I was aware of that... keep flights less than 6 minutes with rests of 15 minutes in between.

But I wasn't aware of anything that says I should "cycle" the pack prior to use.... I read the voltage on my Watt'sUp Wattmeter and it said 12 volts... so I figured it was close enough to full charge for my test needs as I knew I was just gonna be testing 5 second surges a few times for readings...... But after topping it off I did get slightly better results...

Hey ya never know... seems like the manufacturers change the tune a little each year.... and wanted to make sure I was tuned to the right station...

My new packs have the taps on them and I've got a TP-205 balancer coming to make sure they stay matched... even then Charlie says that these new cells in the ProLite series are tough nuts to get out of balance... and that the balancer is really just for peace of mind...

I was looking at HiMax and it looks like the HC3516-1130 would be an alternative motor...putting out somewhere around 300-320 watts at 34-35 amps... it's about .75-1oz heavier...

Funny thing is I have one I just put on a trainer for my son...

Long Pause.....

Did ya miss me? I just ran some tests...

the 3516-1130 with a 10x5E prop and a 3 cell 2100TP Prolite averaged 26 amps and 260 watts

With a 12x6E it averaged 38 amps and 350+ watts... a little too much for the battery and esc I think...

I don't have any 11"E's, but it's safe to assume you could prop it with an 11x5.5E and draw 32-33 amps and get 310 watts or so... 155 watts per lb is not to bad at all...

Any of you guys gap sealing? I know the manual says it is mandatory to seal the elevator hinge line. Can we use ultra coat instead of blendum tape? Have never used blendum before, how long will it last?

Blenderm is excellent stuff....and lite. Du-bro packages it .......you have to cut it, not tear it. And it will last a long time...

I have it on all my surfaces on my gassers. And I use it to hinge my Shockies

The clear Ultracote would just be more work, Blenderm is the ticket.

I have not done any motor testing on mine yet, it is hanging in the LHS as an example, waitng for a no-wind morning.

I have many 2100 3-cells..most of them generics or yellow stripes. Looks like a Pro-lite has to come home for conditioning today.

O.K. guys... here's the scoop...

There is nothing wrong with the motors/ESC's (I figured that based on the output specs)

The Max output of 380 watts is at the dying limit of the motor...

To be within the motor's peak operating efficiency, you're gonna use the 12x6E prop and get between 260 and 280 watts...

Chris gave me some output figures where TP2100 Prolites and Apex 2100 gave about 280 watts... while an 1800 20c FlightPower Evo gave him 310 watts... it obviously was holding voltage up better under higher current drain.

Chris told me that the plane in the video had the ProLites in it and that I would not be dissappointed in the least. I trust that completely.

If you want more power, then a motor like the Himax I mentioned above will pump out over 300 watts on the Prolites but at a 1 oz greater weight and of course shorter flight time.

Other motors may offer better power and efficeincy but be considerably more money...

YMMV... but I'll stick with the Torque for now... If I end up wanting even more power I might try the HiMax and move the Torque to the 26-28 oz Mini Funtana...

Where or who has the 1800 Flight Power Evo's??....310 watts sounds like a kickin' good time.

My E300 came in at 33.0 ozs on the nose. With a Pro lite TP2100. AR6000 receiver. I added a little heavier wire to extend the aileron servo leads , no connectors, soldered. I didn't have 28 ga ...I used 26. Same with the elevator , no connectors, soldered.

I used a custom tailwheel assy, made by a friend who specializes in them. Same weight as stock. All other stock hardware. All stickers but the Aeroshell's. I weighed mine without the wheel pants, though. I am vasilating on whether or not to use them. My grass field is brutal on them .

Saturday morning maiden if the windsock is hangin'.

I think Chris might be getting them but if not you should be able to order them from Duralite. They are heavier than the TP's though, an 1800 weighs about the same as a 2100Tp although the perfomrance more than makes up for it.

I flew mine for the first time with a 2100 Flight Power and there was no drop for 15 mins after which it fell off very fast but still that is a good flight time so an 1800 should be fine. THat is what i will be selling the Extra with here in Europe anyway.

ANother little mod... a 1/32" aircraft ply switchplate double to mount the AirBoss switch... even though it's an easily removable canopy, It' snice to switch it off, walk back to the pits then start messing with the hatch & removing battery

I have an AXI 2814/12 and a CC Phoenix 35 that I had in a Ceadar Hobbies extra 300 that I just lost. Do you guys think that this would be a good set up for this plane. I can swing the plane, I just dont have the extra $$'s right now to get the motor and esc combo.
The plane I lost is the plane pictured in my Avatar.
Thanks,
Clarke

Sorry for the loss, but you sure are looking to replace it with a thoroughbred!

I pumped the info through MotoCalc 8.1 and it says that you should swing a 10x5 prop...

Unfortunately you'll only get a little over 1:1 thrust, so you'll be able to sport fly it nicely , but that's about it. I doubt it would hover...

At least based on MotoCalc predictions

What was the weight of the other plane, what prop did you run, battery and how id it perform?

This little (actually pretty ig) Extra is really sweet....

you might get it and fly it sport until you can muster up the $80 for another motor... maybe the Torque...

OR do this... you COULD sell your motor & ESC for darn near the difference and get the complete combo with motor and ESC...

The difference is like $130... so if you got say $100 or so for your motor ESC, you just need $30 additional to get the planemotor/esc combo...

Maudib, ,thanks for running the numbers for me. The plane weighed in at 39oz and I ran an 11x7SF prop with a Falcon Predator 2200mah 3-cell. The plane was amazingly fast but it was limited on the vertical. I was hoping that the combo would work, because Hobby Lobby says that this AXI should fly a 4+lb airplane with authority......Hence I thought authority would be unlimited vertical and great hovering in the EF Extra being around 30oz. I feel like this is the plane that I really want and you are correct about this thing being a thoroughbred. The cedar extra was my first venture into a full bodied electric plane. So I guess all of the work that I did on the plane didnt really pay off like I thought it would. I figured I might as well get the best equipment that I could and shove it in the plane and when the plane needs to be replaced I could just pull the equipment out and move to my next plane. I bought the AXI thinking that with the claim of jerking a 4+lb airplane around that my options in the e-flight category would be pretty good.....I guess I missed that.
I like your idea of selling and will be listing the motor and ecs on RCU tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help and advice.......Hopefully soon to be the next owner of a EF Extra 300.

I fairly new at this electric thing, I have a E-Flight 480 Outrunner 910kv and was wondering if that would be enough motor for this airplane?
