Default Which engine for a Funtana S from Hangar 9

I'm thinking of buying a FuntanaS 3D 40 ARF

but which engine should I use for 3D flying. 2 or 4-stroke?

I've read in a review that the Saito FA-72 gives more than enough power.
Which engine is comparable with this one (and is cheaper)??

Get a Saito .82a

You'll be MUCH happier.

Most folks ran the 82 or the 100 in the F40 so I can only imagine that same train of thought will carry on to this plane too.

Skip the Saito .72 and go for the .82. They .72 weighs the same as the .82 and is only marginally more expensive. You could also consider the YS .63. It's supercharged and has a good power to weight ratio. Cost is about the same as a Saito .82. For what it's worth, I recently built a F40 and installed a Saito .82. I'm very happy with this setup.

I have the 100 on mine and it is awesome, but I got the 100 because my local shop only had the 72 and 100.Go for the 91 you won't regret it.

Oh yeah the 82 and 91 are about the same price and the weight is not going to matter. I put a carbon fiber landing gear on mine and all I had to do to balance it was move the battery to the back. I had to add about 3/4 of an ounce to the left wing to componsate for the motor.

Saito .72 = 16.5 oz
.82 = 16.0
.91 = 19.6
1.00 = 19.4

YS 63 = 17.9

And OS-engines?
Are the 4-stroke versions also suitable for the funtana?

Personally I think the OS 4 strokes are too heavy for my liking. I use a Saito 91 in my Funtana and love it.

I've never owned a OS 4 stroke but I've heard that they are very smooth and fuel efficient. Unfortunately, they weigh a lot and don't make much power. For example, the OS FS70 II Surpass makes 1.1 hp and weighs 22.1 oz. A Saito .82 makes 1.5 hp and weighs 16 oz. Also, the Saito only costs $55 more than the OS.

When I was looking to buy my Funtana 40, I found several of them at my LHS that were very resonably priced but they both had OS 70's. I passed on them and purchased a new F40 with a new Saito .82. It cost me double what I could have bought a really nice used one for but I don't like being underpowered and/or overweight.

I had a Saito 91 in mine, and it was ROCKIN. Not jaw dropping like with a 100, but still definately enough to get the job done. Forget about OS, get the Saito. I could go to the field, start it, and go fly. No messin with mixtures @ all. No holding the plane up to check the high end. It was like the showtime grill, set it and forget it!

I am building a F40 and wrestling with what motor to get.
I have heard great things about the .82 ...but since I live in Denver, I am concerned the altitude will Zap the power. Does the .82 have enough power to spare?

I want a kick ass set up, but I think there is point of diminishing returns when it comes to over powering a bird.

Thanks,
~Tip

Saito 100. For wild 3D, I've seen the F40 flown with a 72. To say the least, it doesn't perform well with this.

I don't know about the 82 or 91. I'm sure the 91 would be compariable with the 100.

I personally have the Saito 100 in mine..... .1 oz lighter than the 91 and more power.

You want cheaper. The YS would probably be more expensive, but I would go with the 82 if you can't afford the 91 or the 100.

What's the rest of your set-up going to be?

pretty plain vanilla. 6v batt with Futaba 304s....til I have enough cash to upgrade. I think you have me pretty well sold on the 100. Did you have to reset the factory set blind nuts to fit the 100?

What do you advise? I do not prefer digital servo's.

I haven't thought about de R/C setup yet

Am using Futaba 3001 all round. Servos are pretty old but havnt had any problems with them, using extra long servo arms, running 4.8v and they seem quick enough and havnt stripped over the last year of abuse.

You do have to redo the fire-wall for the 100 and also the 91. So that's another reason to go with the 100. If you have to re-do the fire-wall to fite the 91 then you better go ahead and get the 100.

It took me about 30 in to actually figure out. You can e-mail me or message me here on RCU and I can show you how. I have a digital camera so I could send you some pictures of you wanted.

I'm usuing Futaba 3050s on a 4.8v battery. I'm going to get a 6v. I'm going to get 91 oz/in with these servos. I little overkill....I know.

Hope this helps

Any thoughts on the os FL-70 (16.5 oz) in this airplane?
I've been flying mostly electric and don't know that much
about engines.
I'm an intermediate flyer, just getting into 3D.

resedaguy818,
I have also been flying only electrics before purchasing a F40 about 6 weeks ago. Being my first glow plane, I'm very satisfied with mine. The thing that a fuel plane has over electric is a heart that beats when you fire it up. I love the sound and smoke when it comes alive!

Skip the OS 70, power will be only marginal. IMHO, a Saito .82 is a fine motor for this plane. It's a good balance of weight, horsepower, cost and reliability. The F40 doesn't need power for speed, it needs power for hovering and pullout. The Funtanas are not designed for speed. Check out the size of the ailerons, they are almost half the size of the wing!

hey Phillip, how you doing with the F40? They do have quite a bit of wing rock in harriers, as i discoverd, but once used to it you can controll it pretty good, althogh mine is rock solid while harriering inverted. Not the easiest plane for 3D but will teach you loads.

Regards,

Gus

Gus,
I'm very happy with it, but I may not know any better because it's the only fuel plane I have ever flown! Hovers are rock solid and simple. I can't get it to flat spin though. It may be because my CG is too far forward. It does wing rock in a upright Harrier. I've read that if you mix flaps with elevator the Harrier will smooth out. Unfortunately my Futaba 6EXA TX doesn't have a mix for that. I'm planning on a new radio soon. I love doing an inverted elevator into the wind. At idle it just floats straight down like it's full of helium! I have noticed that at slow airspeed during certain maneuvers, the wing can stall and you definitely need a little altitude when that happens. I'm running massive control surface deflections and that could be a contributing factor though.

yep they can tend to drop a wing sometime and in a very similar way to the MF, but not as bad as the mini. Also havnt realy got the flat spins going with it, but still trying, dont get to fly it as often as i would like.
