define engine types -ie. ABC ringed, BB

OKAY... Help a newbie and win a prize!

Can someone briefly breakdown and explain the differences between the most common engine types... eg. ABC, Ringed...non ringed....BB ... etc.

thanks,

define engine types -ie. ABC ringed, BB

Hi

BB: mean the engine has ball bearings in it. most now days do

Ringed: At the top of the piston there are rings. these rings heat up they expand making a seal between the liner and the pisten.

ABC: Aluminium piston in a chrome plated brass liner. This tapers at the top, so at compression it is very stiff to turn over. as the engine is run the top of the liner expands with the heat.

this is the very basics of an engine topic. I could go further intothe topic, but i dont know much more off the top of my head

Hope this helps

Ian

If you want an in depth answer then ask this in the Glow Engines forum.

Basically:

ABC = Aluminium, Brass, Chromium. This means that an Ali piston runs in a brass sleve, which has been Cromed.

Ringed = there is a small ring (sometimes two) at the top of the piston to ensure that there is a tight seal between piston and sleve. (note many ringed engines are also ABC or ABN

Non Ringed = engine relies on the accurate machining of the piston and sleve to get the tight seal (usually by a pinch method near top dead centre)

ABN - Nickle chroming rather than chrome

BB - Ball Bearing (ie proper Ball race rather than a plain bearing)

As for which is better, only certainty is BB is better than plain. Rest depends on the engine.
