Small 3D capable airplane...
 

Does anyone know of a small airplane, something for a Saito 30, that will do decent 3D flight?

I can't seem to find much and I don't really want an electric plane.

Any info. is greatly appriciated.

I think the reason you don't see many 3D aircraft in that small of a size is just because it's harder to do 3D the smaller the plane gets. Presentation is not the only reason the Pro's are using 40% planes, it's becuase they are easier to fly. Partly because it's easier to see what they are doing and partly because the airflow is better managed and more "realistic" (I tried to think of a better word - there's nothing realistic about a hover). It's like those tiny electric park flier biplanes, they are just really twitchy and very difficult to fly and do 3D with.

If your just getting into 3D I'd look for the biggest plane that reasonably fits into your budget... Something at least 60 size. Aeroworks makes a nice 60/90 size edge 540 ARF for example. Or maybe a H9 Funtana. A lot of people like the U-Can-Do-3D. I own one of these and am not happy with the build quality. Excellent flying plane, buy you almost need to take it apart and put it back together again to make it work.

If your set on doing a small 3d plane, maybe build one yourself out of foam? I dunno. I imagine a plane for an engine that small should have no more than 35"- 40" of wingspan (2-3 lbs at the most)

Model Rectifier Corp. has a Pilot kit called the Seduction Fun Master. It is a profile plane and it was designed with 3D in mind. Kit cost $90.00 I believe and can be purchased directly from them.

look at a qhor or a .25 spa3d. I couldnt find any plans to the .25 spa3d so I built my own and flew it on monday. It hovers very well.

Thanks for the input. I agree that the larger planes are better suited for 3D flying. I have a larger plane and it is great if you have enough area and time. I want something small for when time and location are a problem.

Have you looked into a Fat Free Taco? I love it, easy build, hovers, harriers, spins, waterfalls, etc. Paul Swaney sells the kits for $40, and I think it's a bargain for the quality. Search the FF forum for the thread.

BamBam-X- I just built a .40 Great Planes Cap 232 with an OS.50Sx and it is a 3D "MONSTER". But it is not an airplane you want to learn to 3D with, It is VERY sensitive with 50 degrees of throw on the elevator, but it will do every 3D maneuver there is! I know your looking for something to put that .30 on, check with pswany and see if a .30 would 3D his fat free taco, it also is a great 3D airplane. Hope this helps. Citation X

I was thinking of buying a Global Tequila Sunrise and strapping in a Thunder Tiger Pro .25 I've got here and seeing how it does....

I think Kyosho makes a smaller version of their Flip 3D that would hold your .30 on the nose comfortably.

I'm building the Lanier Extra 3.25 at the moment. Was going to build it stock, but now planning to enlarge the tail surfaces so may be able to do 3D.

I'm going with the Saito 40. I think it will probably be too heavy to perform well with the 30. Probably won't perform well due to size, but you never know.

For the engine you plan to use in this plane, I strongly suggest a Model Tech Extra 300..(.25 size)....This A.R.F. is of excellent quality and can pretty much do anything the pilot is capable of. The thing I was most impressed about on this particular model, was that it didn't possess any inner demons that make it wanna snap a wing on landing. (A very nasty trait the ME-109 in the .25 size and the Tequila Sunrise made by Global are noted for).....Just a suggestion. Good luck on whatever design you choose to get.

Well, ok perhaps I don't. Fortunately didn't buy one in the end. Problems encountered by a club mate:

- awfull build
- too heavy
- impossible to get CoG right (either uncontrolable or too stable for 3D)
- usless cowl
- u/c plate snaps off even with perfect landing
- weak engine mount
- doesn't bunt

He sold it after giving up after 6 weeks.

But it does look good in the photos.

I bought one of the above for something to put a spare Leo 37 I had in. My thoughts:

- awful build

Yep, very fiddly for an artf

- too heavy

Yep, mines 4 lbs dead with Leo 37 and mini digis at the back

- impossible to get CoG right (either uncontrolable or too stable for 3D)

Not sure yet only flown twice. Glad I set low rates as it was very twitchy in pitch
