Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
Wanting to know what the best engine for a Pilot 37.5% Yak would be as far as power 3D wise. Want to make sure I have the power to pull off any 3D manuever with authority. Just a couple specs from what I have seen so far.
DLE 170 is the best bargain with 17.5hp Desert Aircraft 170 has 18 hp 3W competition series has 19.5 hp Would it be worth the money to have 2 more hp any thoughts and opinions. |
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
Up to you but it flys pretty darn well with a DLE
|
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
fairly sure a DLE 170 is more power then a DA 170..
and I'm sure that airframe floats around like a kite you don't need a million HP you need good thorttel responce and realiabilty IMO Bowmen rings and Walbro carb DLE170 IMO [X(] |
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
I agree with the reliability and throttle response. IMO the recipe for that would be the DA 170, stock mufflers and a Falcon 32X11 CF prop. This assumes that noise is not an issue where you fly. The Falcon prop will rip pretty easy with the 170 but spool up out of hover is just as good as a wood prop.

I DID have a few issues with my DLE: a missing reed stop led to a cracked reed and running/tuning issues. If you buy a DLE, it would be best to pull the reed cage and do the "reed mod" that has been talked about: surface the plastic reed block on a piece of glass/fine sandpaper to true up the surface the reeds seal against. Valley View warrantied my reed cage, as it was just a Q/C issue from the factory that the metal reed stop was missing. Overall, I'm still happy with my DLE, with the $600+ savings over the DA... |
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
I'd say DA really shines in service I am still almost 100% sure DLE170 is more power ..
and I like Vess >. Falcon .. and Mjez > Falcon .. just IMO Mejz would not be ad loud as prop if you need to consider that |
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
Mjez is a quieter prop, more load on the engine and better downline breaking. All qualities we look for in a prop on an IMAC airplane. I feel the Falcon is a better choice for 3D. I'm not a fan of wood props for anything this large so I have no hands on experience with the Vess props.
Zach, what specifically do you not like about the Falcon props? |
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
I tryed them .. they are not bad i just don't think they have the low side pull of a Vess .. and i think mejez has a littel more low end grab .. but i only flew one falcon prop on my personal plane. honstly its not bad .. its razor sharp !!!!sweet looking prop comes with prop sleaves !!!.. and it balanced Really easy . I don't think it need much just a shot of clear coat .. maybe if that .. where other props I've had to balance the Hub and the the blade .. but it just didn't have same feeling as a Vess did to me personaly .. so it's resally a personal choice the vess was louder then then Falcon eather of all the above props are good props .. just my openion Vess does offer Carbon and Falcon does offer Wood.. |
RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
I started with a Xoar 32x10 wood, as Valley View included it for free when I bought my DLE. Works fine, but is ridiculous loud with prop rip! I also bought a Falcon 30x13W, and the pull was very similar, with higher speed, and it was much quieter. My 170 spun the Xoar 6300; 6000 on the Falcon. Prop rip eliminated with the smaller Falcon:D

RE: Engine for Pilot 37.5% Yak
yep all good props ..
Xoars are okay but on a big ass prop I'D do carbofiber just to avoid the prop flexing and making a **** load of noise from the tips flexing in restances don't forget your props hub will change a littel and you should re tightin your Bolts after a few flights ..just throwing it out there when those things come off its a quite the sight lol ''' bombs away ! |
