Do you necessarily have to have a radio with expo to fly 3D? How much can you do with plain old dual rates?

You can do 3D without expo. You just have to be very careful because the plane will be very sensitive.

Yup...you don't need expo at all to 3D..it sure does help though...

Most of the guys I fly with that are 3D flyers don't use expo awat.
I fly 3D some and never use it
You have to remember to switch to low rates when the airspeed increases and stay high for a while.

Thanks a lot guys. I was just curious because 3D has really caught my attention and was thinking of getting a 90 size extra to try with but I don't have expo. I appreciate the help.

why does expo help on a 3d plane? will just the normal thing do? how much exponential would i need for the 33% h-9 cap 232, though i wont be flyin it 4 a long time.

Depends on personal preference i guess. I like expo for normal flying, cause it makes even a squirly plane behave, but it actually seems to make hovering harder. I started with a lot of expo and runing 3D rates full time, but now prefere to just flip the rate switch. I run 20% expo at regular rate, and 0% for 3D.

It's very much personal preference. I use expo myself, but many guys don't.

What I do is setup the airplane so that no matter what rate I'm on, the control surface deflection at 1/4 stick travel is always the same. This helps to prevent overcontrol when switching rates.

Just my ideas.. your mileage may vary.

its personal preference as everybody rightly stated. I use 40% expo for 3D setup....as you know control throws for 3D are huge (45 deg or more on elevator & rudder), such a high deflection is not required for normal flying. So you would want to soften the controls near the neutral using expo..it certainly helps!

I use the same approach as dcronkhite. Generally no expo at all on low rates and set the high rate expo so that 1/4 4 stick on high rates = 1/4 stick on low rates.
