Servo questions
Although I'm flying for some years, I now have my first 3D-plane. A second hand diabolotin, which flies good for me ( since it's my first 3D plane I can not compare)
I have a question about the servo's used. All 5 of them are futaba RS500: Each aileron, one for the elevator, one for rudder, and 1 for engine. Do you trust this setup? motor is OS46FX ( nickel-sh** is pealing off, my third 46FX with this problem!) I only dare to fly very calm with it because I don't have a good feeling with the fragile servo's. What is your opinion, can this be trusted, or should I replace it? |

whats a RS500?
a 148 or 3003 type servo? should be ok on those, 3001's are better, 3010's are great |

get a set of hitec 5475 digitals. You'll be glad you did. They are approx. 34.99 ea and work very well in small 3d applications. Never heard of the rs500's

I'm flying my Flip with just ballraced servos Futaba 3004don't seem to have any problems. stripped a cog when an Aileron hit the ground that's all.

get a set of hitec 5475 digitals. You'll be glad you did. They are approx. 34.99 ea and work very well in small 3d applications afford the best you can doesn't always make sence, sometimes it's just over kill |

I personally would recomend the s3001 servos or the s148's. The 3001's are a little smother. That is the low end servo that I use. The 3003's aren't as precise as the 148's and they only cost a few dollars more. You don't need much for a 46 size plane.

why not use standard hitec servos they are $9.99 it's only a .46 size plane

RS500 or FS500, it's the same only different names (different countries, different names for the same products...)
These are rather cheep micro servo's: Here are the specifications : Dimensions: 29.0 x 13.5 x 29.5 mm Mass/weight: 18.00 pond/g Operating voltage: 4.8 - 6 Volts Nominal voltage: 4.80 Volts Nominal voltage: 6.00 Volts Torque: 20.00 Ncm Torque: 25.00 Ncm Transit speed: 0.15 Sec/45° Transit speed: 0.10 Sec/45° Small, fast, low-cost micro wing-mounting servo offering high torque; ideal for all applications where powerful control surface movements are required but space is tight. Ideal for wing-mounting, even in thin airfoils. I do not trust these with those large control surfaces and tiny plastic gear. A torque of 20 Ncm is also not soo much, but that should be sufficient I guess. It's those fragile little gears that bothers me the most What do you think, should I replace them with S3001's (I have a few of them waiting for a plane). The servo's of the the rudder and elevator are build in the tail, I'm a little worried about the CG when I replace them |

i run SD200's in planes, not 46 sized, but those tiny cogs seem ok.
what you have is a 2kg servo ( if i remember that newton stuff right ) i would replace them with 3001's leave one on throttle, as for weight, try a rudder pull pull and have that servo in the body near the wing somewhere. low weight is a good idea, but the SD250 would be tight on power, think Hi-tec do some hi torque minis |

i would only use them on throttle in a .25 size+ 3D plane. Just my personal preferance. Id get the new futaba 3010s. cheep, fast and 6kg of torque at 6V

Those cursed little micro servos are no good for even a 40 size 3d plane, if that is you are using 3d throws. My first 3d plane had two of these on the elevator and it crashed due to both of them stripping. They worked pretty good for 10 flights and then wham!
If i were you i would go for at least Hitec HS-225 might minis, or a standard size servo. They have much sronger gears. |

If so do you have these servos? I do. I can deflect my control surface with my radio and take my hand and pull the surface back to neutral. In my opinion not the best for 3d. With the 5475's, you'll break the control surface before you even budge the control surface. I guess it is just really a personal preference though. I have some old 3003's on a funfly profile. I was budget all the way on that. I was just adding my 2 cents anyway. I don't think they are overkill at all. I know a guy who put jr 8411's all around on a funtana. I also know a guy who put s148's on a ucando 46 and lost his plane when one of the aileron's stripped and locked into a full deflected position. Food for thought Al |

Dont forget speed, for 3D we switch stick positions from extremes and if the speed aint there the rudder etc as hardly moved before your sending it back. This extreme quick reversing of direction and continuos use can burn some motors out, noteably Hitec 225's. Note some servos have power but are slowwww, real slowwwww.

no, i meant 3010's, futabas new ones. i run 3001's in my Magnum and Dust, they seem ok, the designer has old 148's in his, and they've never let him down.
a C50 here with a west 50 also has 3003's, my Cougar runs 3003's, again fine. for some reason as soon as you cross the pond, surfaces need better servos :D question, at what point is your servo stronger than the hardware holding it in, and connecting it to the surface? :) |

You might be right about all this across the pond stuff.... When i start on my 40% {insert favorite aerobat} I'm going to use all standard servos cause that is just nuts to spend all that hard earned quid on high torque high speed servos... :) >>>Whacks self in head<<< I'll let ya know what happens.....lol

Hi,
A agree that hi spec servos are just wasted money, my 30% cap runs 9001 servos on the ailerons sucesfully. These are about £25 each and are very nice...If you changed your 3001's for them i guarantee you will notice the difference!...oh and they centre spot on too...which the non-digital hitecs had a tendancy not to (voice of experience rather than other's opinions). my biggest concer for my servos is the one in my car, it's a old AS11 Acoms, very worn out, and a bit too slow for the speeds we do these days. if i'm to upgrade any servo i guess it should be this one
