Control throws
I wanna try to see what the big thing is abt hovering. I got a 1/4 scale spit approx weight will be 25 lbs with a ZDZ 80 and belt drive. I am wondering what kind a setup am I gonna need to hover this thing

RE: Control throws
Joe, I think the hovering thing is the easy part?
Hovering "scale", now thats where the talent will come in!:D |
RE: Control throws
well with everyone doing it it cant be very hard i just want to figure out the setup so i can see what this supposed thrill is of hanging over the runway

RE: Control throws
I agree, it seems that it is a normal practice anymore?
must be easy? I usually just hang out in the pits? gonna try hanging out in mid air now :-) |
RE: Control throws
Well all I know is that you will need about 10 servos in the tail for some reason.

RE: Control throws
that aint scale is it Hans? oh wait unless you need it to drop ballast and stuff
like a hot air balloon to keep the hover? |
RE: Control throws
I think it is just the cool thing to do Lots of servos sticking out the side of the tail.

RE: Control throws
hell i think most of this 3D stuff is a bunch of hot air but cant trash it til ya try it I cant wait to get the thrill of hovering over the runway

RE: Control throws
Spitfires makes great 3D planes. Especially with the ZDZ80/belt drive set-up. Go for it

RE: Control throws
I would install at least a 150 DA if it were me, as those there scale planes are a lot heaver than ya think. Bet it's closer to 30 pounds.

RE: Control throws
I'm thinking like an Evenrude chain saw motor or something might work?
|
RE: Control throws
yes but what kind of throws will I be wanting?
Joe |
RE: Control throws
Throws.
That's easy A LOT;) |
RE: Control throws
Joe, just throw em as much as the radio allows, if the hinges rip out, you've gone to far? :-)
|
RE: Control throws
How many servos should I have in my rudder and elev?
Joe |
RE: Control throws
I would say you need 3 or 4" of throw, seeing its a scale plane.
|
RE: Control throws
At least 2 servos on each control surface for the I'm cool factor
|
RE: Control throws
Heres what you need to do. First of all. Forget everything you've ever learned about flying scale.
2. Buy a plane thats capable of doing 3D 3 Over power it. 4 Buy hi torque servos, and 6v batteries. 5 Take a deep breath because it takes alot of guts to hang your new plane 12" from the ground. (remember the shaking knees?) So to recap. You get to 1 buy a plane ( i know how much we all hate buying new planes):D 2 Buy a radio (ditto):D 3 buy an engine :eek: 4 Explore a whole new part of the hobby you so much enjoy. Doesn't seem like fun to me:) |
RE: Control throws
Thanks crash but I dont wanna waste my money on a 3D plane that I wont fly but to try this out. I want to do it with a scale bird
1 to show it can be done with any plane not just a aerobat (remember aerobatics were invented by warbirds) 2: because i just want to see what the big thrill of hovering in one spot over the runway is then i prob never do it again cause i will have had so much fun doing it 3: prove anyone can do it and see what the big deal of being able to do it is Joe |
RE: Control throws
A ZDZ should be able to hang a 25 pound plane, especially if you have a belt drive. Just set up your high rates for as much throw as you can get (45 degrees is great) and give it a shot. There are no secrets to hovering other than lots of throw and practice.

RE: Control throws
Thanks Ryan Will give it a shot
