Does anyone have this plane??
Hey does anyone out there have the Sig Extra 300XS ( [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUJ24&P=7]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUJ24&P=7[/link] )??? Well i just got it a couple of days ago. This is my second plane from an Avistar Trainer, and i was thinking of this, the H9 FuntanaS, and the H9 Edge 540. So i got this from a guy at my field almost brand new overpowered with a Zenoah G45cc Engine. Does anyone have this plane??? Can you share any comments about it??
Thanks. |
RE: Does anyone have this plane??
Well, to say the least, Don got his fingers chopped off from a lower cc engine that the firewall came loose when reading off the tach. I would seriously reccommend getting a smaller engine for this plane as it will tear away the firewall any moment. Just my $0.02

RE: Does anyone have this plane??
yeah ive heard the same story about that. So i asked the guy i bought it from and he says (and did) reinforces the firewall up to halfway up the fuselage with 24 hr. Epoxy. So it does look really reinforced.

RE: Does anyone have this plane??
It really isnt a 3D plane. I have flown 2 of them (both with gas engines). In all honesty most gas engines are too heavy for these 1.20 sized airplanes. They fly them around great but increase the wing loading too much.

RE: Does anyone have this plane??
About engines ripping out firewalls and hurting people, it's a terrible thing, and it should go to reinforce one of the many rules about operating these powered models. The only time anybody should be directly in front of the prop on any size engine/plane/prop is when starting the engine. Immediately after, move to behind the prop. I see people running up engines to WOT, adjusting engines at WOT, taching engines at WOT, all from in front of the prop, as if props never fail, crankshafts never fail, prop bolts never fail, engines never throw props, firewalls never fail. WHY WHY WHY do so many people insist on doing this while in front of the prop. MOVE TO BEHIND THE PROP, that way most debri will move away from you if failing. The only way to get seriously hurt when following this rule, is if you loose your balance and fall into the prop, which has happened. Sorry to rant, and it is unrelated to this thread, but do yourself a favor and follow this simple rule when handling ALL planes.

I too get concerned when I see people running up engines in that manner.I plan on going 50-100 cc gas soon and I do not feel comfortable wacking that prop from the front. I see some guys at the field starting 100 cc engines by themselves. They are tied down on the tail, but could one not flip the prop by stradling the firewall behind the prop? I have seen a large motor fire up and launch into the operator at 3/4 throttle.not cool

RE: Does anyone have this plane??
I have seen some of the pros start 150 and up size engines by themselves. You straddle the plane with your legs in front of the leading edge to hold the plane and go for it from behind. I wouldnt do mine this way but then again I am not a pro.

RE: Does anyone have this plane??
I have this plane, first engine was a 2.4 gas, I did not like the slow flight abilities with this set up, mainly 3D such as harriers, roller's and slow spins.
It now has a super tigre 2300 piped, and is A LOT lighter, 3D flight is much easier .....alltho it does not have the vertical it had with the gas, over all flight is 100% better, and still enuff vert to hover. I think this plane is a little small for gas IMO, I also have a GP extra 300 patty wagstaff, this plane has a 50cc gas. This plane is larger and will works better with the gas engine......even so I am thinkin of going to glow on this one as well. Want a great gas plane that has a light wing load and will 3D???? Try any 33%, or the new 85" planes from wildhare, extremeflight, or chip's new double vision. |
RE: Does anyone have this plane??
I've had this plane for about a year. powered by an OS 1.60 and an 18x6 prop. Flies very well, will not do any true 3D, lands rather fast with a gas engine in the nose. Check to see that the firewall is reinforced with the aluminum angle that came in the later models. If not, get some from the local hardware store and put it in. Use phillips screws countersunk in the firewall and the sides of the engine box. Secure with self locking (nylon insert) nuts.

RE: Does anyone have this plane??
Sorry to drag this "In front of prop" thing out. There is not a great danger in starting a larger gasser from in front of the prop. Gassers, small and large, are normally started at idle to one click over idle. Everybody with brains, tie the plane to something before starting it, the exception being if somebody is there to hold the plane. After starting a large gasser, there is no need to goose it or otherwise bring the rpm way up. If rpms are to be brought up, waiting to being behind the plane is just fine. If you have some kind of glitching going on, and your throttle servo has a mind of its own, obviously you'd work at this problem and not fly.
