IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
1 Attachment(s)
This is a Hirobo Extra 300L (which is basically a KMP Extra 300L with Hirobo decals).
Is it normal for an Extra 300L fiberglass cowl? I'm assuming that it was built that way to accommodate the right-thrust positioning of the engine. I was wondering, is there a place where I can buy another giberglass cowl for the airplane that DOES NOT have any right thrust on it? SEE PICTURES BELOW. Cowl is white on top and red underneath. First picture is top, second is bottom. |
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
Hold on a second! only the nose ring should have the offset, not the entire front of the cowl line, that's a wierd looking cowl buddy.

RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
What the h*ll? Right thrust should only be in the firewall![sm=stupid.gif][sm=stupid.gif][sm=stupid.gif][sm=confused.gif][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=punching.gif][sm=RAINFRO.gif]

RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
thats a lot of right thrust[&:]
My GP extra is straight across the front. |
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
looks like the funtana . just a cheaper way to make them
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
Hey 3DKIDD the right thrust is also incorporated in the nose ring so to follow the contour of the spinner, unless it doesn't have a nose ring, like a Pitts or laser 200 etc,etc
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
Extras do not have a nose ring, it is all open at the front.
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
Well there certainly isnt anythign wrong with it and yes it is to accomodate sidethrust.... many cowls are like this now.
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
yeh, but it looks stupid
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
I had a cowl that looked like that and I just trimmed it so it would look straight.trim it so the back only looks half as bad as the front then when you put it on it wont look so bad( trim about 1/8 in. off of left side).

RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
Yes Sprink, you are right the Extras don't have a cowl ring, but they are not all open either, you must be thinking of the Laser 200

RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
the great planes patty wagstaff extra dos why? most of the arf cowls are made like that now . how woulds triming one side make it better if you went by that it would take 20 degress left thrust to make it line up.

RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
So thats normal?
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
Right thrust is set by the firewall not the nose ring.

ORIGINAL: qweedqwag Right thrust is set by the firewall not the nose ring. As for the extra, the cowl on my GP extra is completely open at the front. Mates Goldberg extra was the same. See this photo of Patty Wagstaffs extra. Completely open behind the spinner. |
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
I stand corrected! But is your cowl slanted like the one in question? because that really looks wierd.
|
RE: IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS COWL?
it is normal. i thought the same thing of my funtana cowl before i put it on, but when installed it looks fine. matches engine spinner backplate perfectly. Looking at the plane, you dont notice the crookedness, they are made that way, dont trim it. If you trim it and make it straight with the plane your spinner backplate will have a GREATLY NOTICEABLE gap on the right side. leave it alone and put it on, you wont notice it!
