EXACTLY HOW IMPORTANT IS RIGHT THRUST?
I have a .46-sized Extra 300L into which I will be putting a Jett .60L engine (which swings an 11x6 prop at 14,500 RPMs using an in-cowl muffler and running rich!! The engine is a monster.
But I'm wondering, how necessary is right thrust? Couldn't you just add tiny bit of right trim to your rudder and ailerons? Or is the countertorque of an engine too much to be counteracted by minor trim adjustments? |
RE: EXACTLY HOW IMPORTANT IS RIGHT THRUST?
you could add rudder, but different amounts are going to be required for different throttle positions. a plane that is off on the right thrust is a pig to fly. my ucando needed quite a bit more than stock, before it would always fall off to one side or another on vertical lines, no matter what you did with the trim.

Also, why cause all that unnecessary strain on the rudder servo? I don't even know if the plane would track straight w/out right thrust. I'd leave the rt thrust in there.

Pull vertical and go to full throttle. If the plane pulls hard left you'll want to add right thrust. Many planes don't even straighten out very well with rudder input.
If you don't mind planes that fly this way it's not an issue but I think that most would rather have a plane that goes where they point it, in that case it can be very important. |
RE: EXACTLY HOW IMPORTANT IS RIGHT THRUST?
All my Diablotins with os46fx require lots of right thrust but also some down as well, I noticed that while hovering it would tend to fall off toward the canopy hands off, the down thrust improved this and made landings more smooth as well - less tendence to ballon with wind and heavy tail.

RE: EXACTLY HOW IMPORTANT IS RIGHT THRUST?
If your radio has the capability, you could add a mix on your radio with the throttle being the master and rudder the slave. That way you could vary the amount of right rudder according to the throttle position.
Chip Hyde recommends this over in his forum. |
RE: EXACTLY HOW IMPORTANT IS RIGHT THRUST?
I think the overall design dictates if thrust adjustments are needed. Some of the best
flying pattern ships I have ever flown were set up 0-0 with no right or down. Some designs need it. You'll probably just have to experiment. tommy s |
