Servos: HS-81
 

Does anyone use small/micro servos in 40 or 46 size 3D planes 3 to 3 1/2lbs? I've been thinking of useing Hitech HS-81's which have 36oz. @4.8v and my planes to use 6v and giving them 42oz. of torque. (weight=.58 speed= .11/60)

I am using hs81 servos on my 40 size extra, I installed 2 of them for split elevators. I really like them but the little nylon gears strip very easily. I bought 2 sets of metal gears & installed in them & they are great now.

I ran them in a profile hots with an mvvs .40 for a long time. The only problem I ever had was when I hit one of the ailerons on the runway and it stripped the little nylon gears. I was skeptical when told that they would work in the hots, but time proved that they were fine, and I flew it hard.

Check into the 225MGs. They put out gobs of torque and are super light.

I fly the 85-bb's in a zen 30 any they are perfect. Lots of tork and fast as well. Fine servo's!

Thanx everyone! I have the Hot Knife profile and with these servos (5 HS-81), a 5C NiMh 300mah 2/3 AAA, the HS-555 receiver, powered by the Mag. XLS 52 using a 6oz. fuel tank, the plane weighs in at just a hair under 3Lbs.! The 6v runs the servos a bit faster and the torque at 42oz.!

I did look at the 255's but I'm really am looking to go light---possibly changing to metal gears sounds good. I did hook up a Cirrus 4.9 servo to the throttle and it worked fine (in test-grounded), but am not sure to trust it though it does have a pound of torque.

Hi! watch out for burning the pots out on 6v. make sure nothing binds. at all. have used hs-81's for a long time, are good servos, but be sure that they are not touching the case to anything, as the pots will wear out due to vibration. also, if it flutters at all they are gone! having said that, have used them on ailerons on a fun design. routinely use them on my 25 size ferroplanes at over 120 m.p.h. have used hs-85 m.g. on rudder of an omp 540. don't get the nylon hs-85! but really, hs-225 m.g. are better suited to fun fly stuff. VERY rugged, very fast, hold up to 6v well, and still a little lighter than standards with more torque! a little pricey, but you won't regret using them. but you can use 81's, just be careful on your setup, as noted!

Hey in regards to you using the HS- 81, how much did your plane weigh and is it a 3D plane (large control surfaces)?

I had the profile hots. It had all large surfaces and weighed around 4lbs. I sold it a couple of years ago.

DON'T use the 81's in a fun fly, you'll strip those nylon gears. I had some in a 2.5lb fun fly with a .25LA up front, took about 10 flights to strip one in the aileron. The 81's are great in LIGHT duty applications like throttle but forget them for big surfaces with big throws.
