RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

SUpposedly, the issues with appication of the ChinaKote were addressed in this Special Edition... still CHinaKote but applied better.

The only issues with the covering on version 1 were the purle, yellow or blue stripes peeling off (they didn't like to adhere to the white pearl...

The base is perfect... a couple hours work/Ultracote would replace them easy.

dbcaster... heck yeah $995 is a steal! Like getting the plane for $400...

The trick to a great flying DV is to loosen the cabanes and set the wings in place... add the struts and skae everything until it fits well... THEN mark and drill the holes for the struts.

Install them with screws THEN tighten the cabane bolts.... This will insure a warp free alignment. Mine is simply awesome.

17 lbs is a tad heavy for the radical 3D power we all seem to be getting used to... but it will still haul this thing pretty well, pull from hover, etc...

A little work and careful equipment selection and you might get it to 16-16.5 if you leave off wheel pants, add CF wingtubes, lipos, CF spinner.

Push the engine as far out as you can and have the cowl still fit correctly.

Maudib,
You talked me into it. I read your review on the Ultimate and see that you did prefer the DV over it. So far yours is the only comparison I have seen of these two particular planes. I had not yet purchased an engine so to get a DV for another $400 I could not pass it up. The DV combo is now actually cheaper than the Ultimate combo at Chief. I think I may actually build the DV and put the Ultimate on the shelf. I am coming from flying helis for the last two years so I will be at the point of learning 3D with a plane. It sounds like the DV will be better for learning.

you are so rite about the wing ,the top in my case, i had about minus one degree, flew ok just floated a little better one landing when i change the incidence to 0 to match all other surfaces, thats what i ment abuut the outer struts on the first version being easer to adjust. glad to say i bought another first version, the one advertise in this thread. JUST IN CASE!
DBCASTER
you can't go wrong, you will like it! if you use the stock DA muffler for the 50 or a cnister set up makes for a easier assembley, i used a slim line pitts had to cut a little of the fuse lower corner to fit.
ENJOY!

dbcaster 07-19-2006 09:20 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Closetguy,
Can I get the stock DA muffler to fit without cutting up the cowl? I thought the Slimline would fit better but if the DA will fit that would be great.

kaseyk1 07-19-2006 09:29 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

The Bison Pitts has more of an angle so you don't have to cut the fuse. On my second DV I used the Chip Hyde Quiet Pipe, that's the ticket. No cutting the cowl at all. If you already mounted your engine it won't work. You have to line it up with the pipe attached for proper alignment.

Terry
P.S. Maudib, thanks for all you tips a couple years ago when I had my first DV.

dbcaster 07-19-2006 09:31 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

The new kit is already pre-drilled for the DA-50 so I don't think I would have a choice on alignment. I would think it sould be setup to fit.

That's right I forgot. I have a new scheme DV before they started predrilling for the DA.

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

YEP,i could not have said it better than KASEYK1! and you should make more power with the CH pipe! and the da muffler will fit with out cutting the side of cowl, as long as your engine is mounted on a 7 o clock angle I THINK. da muffler makes good power, better than any in cowl muffler.

You're welcome kaseyk1... I suually throw a hodgepodge of info out... glad you found something useful.

dbcaster...

Yes the DVle is predrilled but a fella can easily plug the holes and redrill based on engine selection or muffler setup.

The whole fitting a muffler in the cowl thing has been hashed a lot...

The DV (and Vision too for that matter) are failry narrow fuse designs... and there just isn't room to hide everything unless you go with a header/pipe.

In the beginning I notice that I'm particular about the cutouts... and then after a while, I don't give it another thought... it's all about the flying...

Canting the engine (and the stock setup is that way) requires a little cutting on both sides. The can shows below the aircraft pretty well and is 1/2 lb heavier... a trade off in my opinion... If you go with the quiet pipe... do NTO cut the header... leave it full length.

Here are some various pics... including a mod I did to open the bottom of the engine box to have MUCH easier access up inside the fuse.... I epoxied liteply plates inside as shown to strap my ignition and ign. battery to.

A single liteply cover covers the entire double bay and is held in place with several servo screws... it doesn't save weight... but makes for a neater, cleaner and easier install. I opted to put a cover back to tie it all together again for strength... not sure it needed it... perhpas I could have simply covered the bays with ultracote to keep air from entering the fuse.

Where are you guys getting the DV/DA50 for $995?!! I thought it goes for $650 now at Chips site just for the plane?

It's a special that ends the end of this month I guess...

MIXMASTER,
That is exactly why I figured I could not pass it up. I spoke to someone at Chief and they said they are closing them out because Chip is working on something new. I believe they will be at this price until they are all gone, but don't take my word for it.

I got my secound one last week from Chief. $500.00 shipped to my door. Kit was missing some of the parts but I called and talked to Amy and she shipped everthing out that day. I have not seen the parts yet but should show up this week. Some of the covering looks like it was overheated when they where shrinking it at the factory.I have not tryed to reshrink it yet.Its like its puckered in some spots. Small little tight wrinkles. Firewall was not drilled but was marked out for the DA 50.[:o]

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

If I recall, some of the "LTD Edition" were with uncut firewalls to allow for those with other engines.... Looks like you got one...

I got my DV back together... haven't flown it in what sems like forever... HOTDOG... now I remember why I like this plane so much... My buddy got some more video for me... maybe I'll put together another little snippet sometime.

It just will NOT snap on elevator input (it'll snap roll nicely but I mean unintentional snapping with too much elevator) Very predictable.... love it, love it, love it!

I did finally have a piece of the tail trim start to peel off... will have to get it back on... or as I mentioned I may just order some UltraCote in very similar colors and replace the trim...

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Well I got all the missing parts today. Fast shipping "Amy" You rock!! :)I reshrank everything and it turned out SWEET!! I used a heat gun on all the main color areas and a iron with hot sock on the strips and it really turned out nice. The new China coat has a better shrink rate than the older stuff but stills its not ultracoat or mono coat though. you guys with the strips starting to come off on the older China coat reiron down with a hot sock with the iron at med high heat make shure you CLEAN the Covering good with Astone first. Then go to town with the iron then at the leading edges use clear nail polish or trimsolve from mono coat both will work and help keep eveything on the plane My first autographed DV is on its second year and I fly it alot and everthing is still on it as new. It is one sweet flying bird. Thats why I got a secound one just in case this one goes in I would be in DV withdrawl!!!! The DV is one fine 3D machine one of the best most stable flying airplanes out there with little coupling for a bipe. One thing I do not like on the new SE kit is the wheels are to soft for this airplane the belong on a 40 size kit not a 50cc gasser.[:@] For $450.00+shipping its a realy good deal for such a great flying airplane. At $450.00 they wont last much longer thats for sure. I got S/N 177 and it was ordered last week.:D

just started to fly my DV again this week end , first time this year, been flying the QQ YAK trying to get use to it,what a difference! the DV does the best wall into a hover it is so easy, just locks in and hangs there and i am not that good in hovering, knife edges and KE loops look to cool!,did not get it into a good invertd flat spin, they looked more like a knife edge spin, it look good! the YAK is going to gather dust now, i forgot how much fun this plane is to fly, just greasing in the landings all day. glad i found a first version new in the box, just in case!
ENJOY!

You guys are all making me feal like I made the right choice in getting the DV instead of flying the Ultimate. Now I just can't wait until it gets here so I can build it.

Hey Closetguy,

I noticed you're from Berlin Hts, Oh. I'm not too far from you and my LHS is Daniel's Hobbies in Berlin Hts. Where do you fly?

KASEYK1
i was just going to ask you the same when i saw your last post , i was waiting for your next post i fly in New Haven, with the Willard Fun Flyers, great field out in the middle of no where, doesn't matter witch way the wind is blowing, there is nothing around, take offs, landings any direction,
where do you fly,

DBCASTER
you will love this plane,if you like flying bipes! you will need stronger servo for rudder, i know the directions say 130 oz. but it will not hold in a KE loop, i used a hitec 5945s in the tail surfaces
and 5625 in wings.
ENJOY!

Closetguy,

I fly down at Ashland. I think I found your field a couple years back. Is it the one with the 10 ft. deep stone lined drainage ditch along side it?

lazy eight 07-25-2006 07:40 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I have the Hitec HS-5955 on the rudder its one bad ass servo. 333 inoz. and fast. Chief has them for $95.00 they are the best servo going.

Will one receiver be enough if you go all digital servos? And for battery,Lipo or NIMH?
