Blender Vrs Flat Spin

Who can explain the difference between a blender and a flat spin, or are they the same ?

i feel they both end up being flat but:

the controls are different to enter them. I start a blender by bringing the plane down in a aileron only spin then i enter the snap position on the sticks (left ailerons, right rudder)

on a flat spin I enter with full L or R ailerons, and (L or R) rudder depending on it i do it to the left or right full elevator (depending on do I want inverted or canopy up. Some planes require crossing the ailerons to go flat 1/2 way thru the move, and vise vera with the elevator if you want to be inverted with cross controls on the ailerons, and rudder.

I would also say the blender will test the structure of your plane were as a normal flat spin doesn't put that same stress on the wings and air frame......

more 2 come from other flyers......

A blender ends up in an inverted flat spin (upside down) after trying to tear your wings off :) enterd from a spin tumble. A regular flat spin is upright, entered into immediately

a blender can snap the fuselages of 1/3 scale extras in two(yeh not a pretty sight) and a flat spin just looks sweeet but if done wrong the "airplane" turns into a big pile of kindling

Just to clear some confusion... A blender is a way of ENTRY into an inverted flat spin, its very quick and violent (basically a series of rolls on the vertical down-line followed by an abrupt snap into a spin). The inverted flat spin is the result of a blender but also can be started as a separate maneuver.

I think I got it

OK, thanks for the input. Sounds like a blender is a negative snap from a vertical down-line aileron roll. If held it results in an inverted flat spin. I have never entered a spin in that fashion. I always enter a flat spin from a power off full stall, nose drops, aileron roll, then add rudder, elevator, and throttle to flatten for upright or inverted. I'm sure if you did a blender with any appreciable air speed it would severely stress the fuselage behind the main wings.

Anyone else with input please chime in.

I've always known a blender to be a flat spin where the throttle is advanced to speed up the spin and slow the descent. It shouldn't matter whether it's inverted or upright.

3DMike and Aerosplat got it. If your jaw doesn't hit the flightline when you watch it then it wasn't done right. It's so violent you are astonished the plane is still flying, and as some have witnessed, some don't.

A nice vid of a blender.. (panic)

Seems like they are also called panic, even on the Horizon links..
Here is a link of a guy doing one.. it is sweet.

Panic is what Quique calls it (he actually came up with the maneuver for the 1996 TOC.)

Not really sure where the name Blender came from.. but it's the same thing.

blender comes from the look at if the plane was put inside a blender........ looking into the glass you know the deal.....

I did the diving roll entery 3 times with one of my planes and decided I didn't want to abuse MY plane like that anymore. I'll do it with somebody else's if they want, but not with mine.

Blender Vrs Flat Spin

In 1990, after seeing Don Muddiman fly the "Flying Machine", I built the 40 size and found out what these were on a bet... a dude at the field said "I bet you won't" so I did.....Full power, down line, then full outside snap!!! WOW!! Didn't have a name for it, but it made me famous around here for many years. The plane is still going too!!!

Try this: horizontal blender! Full throttle, straight and level, pull up to about 15 degrees and start rolling. After about two or three rolls, give the inverted snap command. It will do a real violent snap and then go into a flat spin if done correctly. Works with my GP 60-size Extra.
