C/A funky 40

I am currently building this plane. Can anyone with 3d skills give me a flying report on this plane? thank you watso

I have been very happy with my Funky. I put an O.S. .50sx with an Ultrathrust muffler in the nose. It is a rocket coming out of a hover! Torque rolls, blenders, waterfalls and incredible flat spins it does it all. The gear is a little low. I bent the gear to give me more prop clearance.

Watso I just bought this kit too and will start on it over the next couple of weeks. The instruction manual leaves a little bit to be desired and if we could compare notes on the construction that would be great. I read a review on the plane in a RC magazine from Spain. Overall it received a good review for construction and flight characteristics. I live in Argentina where the plane is manufactured and it was recommneded to me bc it is pretty popular in the local clubs.

I have mine all framed up, and motor & cowl installed. i put a webra speed 50 on it. this plane builds very nice. I am woundering if this is good enough plane to learn to harrier with, I can do blenders & torque rolls with my great planes extra 300s, but hard to do any other 3d with that plane. Hope the funky 40 will be a good trainer for 3d.

Hey, thats a great looking plane contempo. I bought a new jr 6102 with expo. I have never had a radio with expo, hope it helps me. I am really suprised at how strong this plane is, it is pretty light. Did you use standard servos? Also do you know what your funky weighs? Well I need to go do some sanding on mine so i can get ready to start balancing and covering.

What's the funky weight with Os46FX or 50SX in the nose?

contempo 03-12-2004 09:47 AM

RE: C/A funky 40

I am at 4lbs 10ozs right now (O.S. .50sx). Vertical is unlimited.

I used high torque coreless servos on mine. I think quality standard ball bearing servos would do the job. this thing does the most violent blenders I have ever seen. High torque servos really make this thing come to life.

Nice covering contempo!
I have hust completed the CA 24% Extra 300L that i will fly soon...:D

What do you think if we put an OS46FX in the Funky. Would it be enough to hover it?

I think the .46fx would be enough to hover it. Especially with an upgraded muffler like the Ultrathrust or the Tower Hobbies model. You probably won't have the same pull-out authority, but I think it would be acceptable. I had to build a tunnel into the bottom of my fuse for the muffler to fit in. A little work, but well worth the effort.

RE: C/A funky 40

Good work!
In fact i have an 4s OS-52FS and 2s OS-46FX. I think the os-46Fx with a tune pipe would be better than my 52FS...

Where did you buy the funky?
I bought my Extra 300 to planeplus last year but CA changed of distributor in USA?

I picked mine up at the Joe Nall Fly-In 2 years ago from the Planes Plus Booth. I think CA has a new U.S. direct importer based in Miami.

Hey Gringo Volador, have you started building your funky 40? if you need any help just write in and i'll help you out. hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I"am going to put high torque servos in mine. Need to make a trip to the hobby store to get some. all I have left to do is install radio gear and balance, cover and fly.

RE: C/A funky 40

Watso I will be starting next week. I am sure I will need some help along the way. I only have one high torque servo and I am going to use it for the rudder. With living in Argentina some of the equipment gets expensive so I have to be selective in what I can use. I plan to take my time in building it as it is my first kit, but I cant wait to get started.

Hi All,

Is the fuselage side area enough for great knife edge? Thanks.

RE: C/A funky 40

Watso what have you done as far as the servos in the tail. Did you put one underneath for the rudder and then one on each side of the fuselage for the two elevators or did you just put one for the rudder and one for the elevator? I had planned on putting three in the tail but have seen pics of ones with just two servos and I was wondering if the added weight in the tail is worth the added performance of the extra servo.

watso 03-15-2004 02:55 PM

RE: C/A funky 40

Gringo Volador I am going to use 3 servos in the tail it appers that it will balance out ok with no extra weight. The elevators are fairly big and with as much throw I plan on having I feel I need a seperate servo for each. Hope this helps you out. good luck watso.

Hi Contempo

Did you tach the RPM gain with your pipe? i am curious to see the RPM difference with your pipe and the OS standard muffler. I did some search on tower hobbies and have found only this muffler:

I have found another muffler... It's the Mac's muffler. I do not know what to expect from that?

RE: C/A funky 40

I haven't tached mine. Ultrathrust mufflers are available from the manufacturer at www.pspec.com
They have a chart on their site that lists RPM gain their mufflers provide.

They quote an RPM gain between 1000-2000 !

Hi guys,
It seems that Aeroworks is selling the complete CA models kit now! 99$
http://www.aero-works.net/store/detail.aspx?ID=206

Is there a plan coming in the Funky 40 kit or only an instruction manual? My CA 24%Extra300L did not inlude one.

watso 04-07-2004 07:33 PM

RE: C/A funky 40

My funky 40 came with plans for the wing & tail surfaces. They do not have plans for the fuselage because it builds so simple & straight you do noy need them.

hey contempo if you read this. where do you have your c/g set on your funky 40? thank you watso.

RE: C/A funky 40

watso,

I put the cg right where the instructions said. I don't remember what that is.... haven't seen a need to change it.
