Modeltech MAGIC...Crashes
 

Just thought I would tell you that yesterday my modeltech MAGIC crashed. It got locked into an Inverted Flat Spin and no matter what controls were put in it would not come out.

It spiralled to the ground and landed/crashed behind some trees at our flying club. I thought it was a bin liner pick up, but when I got there all that was damaged was a clean break on the rudder and some minor wing tip damage. 30 minutes in the workshop and it was patched up and ready to fly again.

Just wondered if anyone could shed any light onto why it would NOT come out of the Inverted Flat Spin. Was really strange. Nothing else is damaged. Everything works as before.

Have you try doing a inverted flat spin before? The only thing I can think of is that the stall was so great that it was unrecoveralbe!! So no matter what control inputs were given, you still had turbulant/disrupted air flowing orver the wings. It may have just been one of those things that happens and probably will never happen again.[:@]:([&o]

are you sure you had it in a an inverted flat spin , if you did that is probally why it was unrecoverable. I have tried to get a magic to invert flat spin but i don't think it is possible. maybe once they go inverted flat they are just unrecoverable , sounds kewl will have to try to get mine to do some more this weekend [8D]

Yes it was for sure ina flat inverted spin, like a said, no real damage, all repaired now. Just P**sed me off a little :)
Thanks for your replies so far, it was getting chucked about more than it every has been though :( whoops. But hay, got to get it sorted, its my play plane. I'm sure we all have one. It may have come out if I had had more altitude.

Keith, did you loose radio? i did a low blender with a panic someone gave me and i lost contact in an inverted flat spin and BOOM! lol. Tghe, i took it back to the pits and the radio was back.........weird

The one time I could not get my Magic out of a Flat Spin was because I snapped the Vertical Stab off at the fuselage in flight. Since then I have been using flying wires and haven't had a problem, inverted or right-side up. Could it be possible the Vertical Stab broke before it crashed?

The instructions I used were found on RCU somewhere, but I can't find them right now. Basically I used leftover 2-56 Dubro pull-pull wire. I drilled a little hole in each side of the horizontal stab, vertical stab, and the fuse. I reinforced the holes with CA and re-drilled. Then I ran the pull-pull wire through the fuse, Horizontal stab, vertical stab, the other side of the horizontal stab and back through the fuse. I pulled it snug (not too tight or you will deform your stabilizers) and CAed it in place. Extra hands help, but it can be done by yourself. This technique seems to loosen up after awhile. Removing the plastic coating seems to help a lot with the loosening. I currently have one leg loosening up on me between the fuse and horizontal stab, however. It is simple and easy to rework, when necessary.

Just a thought, how far back is your c/g. In many platforms a to fare aft c/g will lock in a unrecoverable spin.
