Splitting the 3D forum
Can a sub forum be added for 3D flying and manuvers? I hadn't noticed that this forum had become almost unreadable with all of the "what about this plane & motor combo" threads. Id personally like to see a sub-forum for the equipment, allowing the main forum free for 3D discussion. I guess the overwhelming number of "what if I buy this" threads would indicate our propensity to throw money at an issue vs. working it out. I.e. instead of "how do I practice, or improve this manuver" all of the threads are "what can I buy that will let me fly like Chip/Quique/Jason/Mark..".

RE: Splitting the 3D forum
That is true, but I guess you are going to have to go straight to the admin. Although there are manoever topics around, but usually if people want help they go onto the online mag.
But I see your point. |
RE: Splitting the 3D forum
Chris,
I sympathize with your frustration, however what you are proposing is not possible. The thread may clean-up for a while but it would soon get cluttered with off topic material again. I have noticed this in every discussion group I've participated in on the Internet. A common and frustrating occurance is new people seeking information that has been discussed ad-nauseum in other threads. And, as you mention above, threads turn into a repeating string of what about this and what about that. I think it is human nature to want the information one is seeking quickly and with the least amount effort. Therefore, people do not conduct searches of past threads to look for info which leads to multiple posts of the same question or topic. I think the only way to control the content of each forum is aggressive monitoring and reposting of off topic posts to the appropriate forum by the moderators of each forum. Obviously, this is unrealistic. I think we are stuck with what we have and should just make the best of it. In fact, I've noticed that after a while you tend to tune out threads and posts that don't apply or interest you. Ken Pavlou |

RE: Splitting the 3D forum
I didn't really notice it until I saw another site's forum that had some useful information about 3D and not a bunch of ads for 50cc Arf's, and "buy this, buy this and you'll be a better pilot threads".
Listen, I'm as guilty as anyone of asking for the quick and dirty when it comes to problems and hot-to's (look at my post history for christ's sake), so I didn't mean to offend. I just wish that there were a sounding board for ideas regarding flying 3D. Personally, I know how to T/R and rolling harriers, I want to hear about things that I've never seen before, and maybe talk through some possible manuvers. Chris |

No offense was taken, hopefully you did not take offense either. I actually agree with you. It would be nice to discuss new or existing 3D maneuvers and their mechanics in depth without the hype and usual annoyances. I simply wanted to point out that some things are how they are and there is no changing them. Ken Pavlou |
RE: Splitting the 3D forum
Can I make a suggestion here? I think that if you start a thread that pertains to only one subject, make it perfectly clear in POST #1 what the thread is all about. Explain that if things start to get off track, then anyone at any time can certainly type "REFER TO POST #1". And you certainly can always "quote" POST #1" in your response. It's just sometimes the fingers type faster than the mind can think. We've all done it. An idea, comment, question or response pops into your head that you just don't think what thread you're really in, you just start typing. I'm sure that if things got out of line or out of hand, just a friendly reminder to "REFER TO POST #1" would put things back into prospective.
So, Chris. I vote you create a 3D thread. The things you're looking for in 3D are things I'd like to learn too. Identify what you want in the newly created POST #1. Make everyone aware of what exactly you'd like to see in it. And, make everyone aware that if different subjects are found to be more norm than the original 3D topic, they will be directed to read "POST #1". Just a suggestion - But - It might just work. |
RE: Splitting the 3D forum
It's a good idea Chris but I think the others are right. Plus, It gets old giving a detailed answer to some 10 year old about how to hover and then two weeks later his 8 year old brother asked the same question. I guess that is a problem with all these forums. Figure out a way to fix that and I'm all for it.

RE: Splitting the 3D forum
This world isn't perfect, deal with it. All of our problems cannot be solved.
 |
RE: Splitting the 3D forum
Yeah, I believe this is a tough one to fix as well. I understand the desire for better organization, but with so many of us posting...I think it's to everyone's credit that it works as well as it does. You can also have too many forums...in which case info gets spread out and harder to find...and easier to miss. I can forgive some of the repeat postings too because sometimes a search produces a dizzying amount of info to sift through. I'd LOVE to see every single message neatly catagorized, but without a team of full-time editors moving stuff around it's not likely to happen. This is how it gets when we ourselves are in control, so you get the good and the bad.
I like Cap's idea of starting your own "mini-forum" with a new post using a carefully worded subject line to draw in the folks you want. If/when that gets corrupted....start another one. |

I say F it. (no offense)

Chris, If we got rid of this type of thread R/C Universe wouldn't exist. Unfortunately! I agree with you...... However, look how long the thread "Looking for someone to teach rolling harriers" lasted? |

Italian Flyer's posts are a perfect example as to how quickly a thread can become polluted. Only 12 posts and under 24 hrs. Shame. Joe

RE: Splitting the 3D forum
I've seen thread based "mini-forums" used successfully on some sites. For instance you can create a thread called "Rolling Harrier Forum" in here and everyone can post stuf on the rolling harrier. the mods would try to keep it on topic of rolling harriers and it could grow as big as it needs to. You could do one for each maneuver and let them be the pseudo-forums.
Perhaps we can try this to see if it works or not? If it doesn't we can always try something else! |
RE: Splitting the 3D forum
That sound like a good solution Marc. I just don't want to be in your shoes when someones post is deleted. You guys do a good job most of the time. When dealing with Joe Public on a daily basis there is always someone who gets off base.
What about an IQ test to enter certain forums? David |
