Hanger 9 Edge 540?
I was wonderoing if the edge 540 by hanger nine would be a good 3d plane I looks good nice surfaces and such. I want to get into imac flying and need the plane to do it. I fly foam right now to learn my manuverse. The most simple move do them in not blenders. but inverted low passes(brain fart). Anyway I am going to be flying everyday to hone my 3d skills (if weather premits). I was wanting a plane I could afford to compete with so any suggestions or help is welcome.
Thanks |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
I have had 2 hangar 9 edges and have not happy with either , just do a search here on RCU and you will find a large number of post on this plane. I would suggest to find a different plane they don't fly well IMHO.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
You bet, all the H9 planes are awesome, the early extra was heavy, but the rest are great. I have flown them all. And still have a sukhoi, its my favorite.
You cant go wrong with them. Now, if you want to step up to another world, try a composite-arf plane! |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
i didnt 3d with my edge, but it is a good flying plane! i competed in JR SCAT (IMAC like) and beat a 35% plane, so it is possible and can do it if you need a cheaper plane for competition.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
The question is what Edge 540 are you referring to, the one John or Chad is talking about? :D
|
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
Ooooh, good point Nathan.
Are you talking about the 33% one or the 25% one? |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
Now i dont know about the 33% edge it probally is an excellant plane i know i love my 33% hangar 9 sukhoi but the 1/4 scale edge is junk IMO.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
is hangar 9 still selling the edge i have they quit making it[:o]
|
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
the 27% Edge actually, is not worth it IMO, I own this plane, and have flown it. For 3d, this is not the plane you want at all.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
Well mine flew like an absolute dream. It did all the 3D manuevers and the only thing I saw wrong with it is it had a little wing rock in a harrier. And can be controlled with the ailerons. No nasty tip stall or any of the such. Mine would just mush forward in a stall. It would wall nicely. Probably one of the easiest to torque roll in 1/4 scale size. In my opinion a great entry level 3D plane. There are some that did not have a great experience with this airplane and seem to be the first to voice there opinion on it but if you look at the threads on it you will find there are alot of people that did. This is a good flying airframe when built right. Try to keep it light so stay away from gas engines. A YS 140, Satio 180, or OS 1.60 FX makes a great combo with this plane and keeps it light. The OS is the cheapest route using just 5 or 10 percent nitro fuel. Just follow the instructions in the back of the manual for setup of the plane. Mike McConville is a ex- TOC competitor and knows what he is doing here. Just make sure to put the CG at 4" to 4.5" behind the leading edge of the main wing. I believe the CG was wrong in the manual. This is best achieved by putting the battery up front like described in the manual.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
I have seen a vid somewhere of someone really rocking the show with a little edge. Guess it depends on the pilot somewhat as well.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
I was talikng about the 1/4 scale which other better planes are there I don't have a job so I can't afford much I only have money from mowing lawns.
Thanks |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
Here's my old edge...
http://www.3drc.info/images/edgelowharrier.JPG I now fly the H9 72" cap, 3d is sooooooo much easier and more stable than the edge... waterfalls are bliss.. engien in the cap is a mackay 30cc gas... weight 12lb. |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
ok thanks I have seen the caps fly and they do great.
Thanks I went on there web sit and can't find it can you give me a link. Do they still make them? |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
The caps do fly pretty well! Buddy has one with a 50cc on it:D

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
My edge was great. I built it by the book with a Saito 180, Hitec servos with split elevator servos and 3inch wheels. I had it balanced at the rear of the range. Mine flew great. Harriers where great with NO wing rock. How you ask? Remove a little elevator. When I would first put it in a harrier, the wings would rock, but I could remove elevator slowly and it would lock in. My only complaint was that the waterfalls were a bit slow, but you could tell it was a waterfall. Flat spins wouldnt completly flatten out but they were pretty good. Overall, I was very impressed with mine. Especially after all the bad mouthing I read here on RCU. I flew mine over 200 flights and sold it so I could get the Sukhoi. I like it even more. But. As much as I like my edge, I find it hard to spend 349 on that plane when you can get the GSP Katana for 200. If you can get an edge for less than about 250, I say get it. If not the Katana flies nearly as good, although the harriers arent quite as good. They both fly really smooth and are really responsive in the IMAC stuff. Especially if you leave them just a touch nose heavy.

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
What size is the katana I have seen these and they look like they fly great. FOr 200 dollars that is not bad. I would buy the Sukhoi but can't shell out that kind of money. If I get my job this summer i think you know what will hapen. lol. If there are anyother planes that are great planes let me know. I have no problem building a kit not at all.
Thanks I have searched and everyone says bad about it. |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
The Katana I beleive is a 74 in WS plane. If you dont mind building a kit I hear the the CA kits are awesome. You might check into them.
|
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
If you Don't mind building wich IMO is the best way to go. Either get a CA extra 27% or a 24% or if you want a even better kit get a carden Cuda. I have a CA extra 27% that i'am building now great kit and comes in very lite. IMO you can not go wring with building your own plane if you can find the time. I ABSOLUTELY HATE HOT GLUE and i have not found an ARF yet that does not have some in it yet. And any fuel will eat up!!!

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
I have the 27% Edge and I love it. 3D's Great!!! You can use a Moki 1.80 or a 2.10 depending on what you want. Mine uses 6 coreless servos and 1 mini throttle servo all on 6.0 volts. It will do the best blenders you have ever seen, and it will waterfall in its owh length! Pretty easy to hover too.
Can't go wrong with the Edge! 3D-kid330 |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
Could you give me a website for ca kits.
Thanks The cuda does look nice but 499 dollars is kind of pricey. is their anyother place I could get thew plane for cheaper. |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
http://www.camodel.com.ar/Ingles/homeingles.htm That is the link to CA models , and i'am sorry but carden is the place i know of to buy a carden kit. But i will say this and i do own some carden planes and have built them you defently get what you pay for !

RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
My H9 Edge was my first big plane, but it was put together and assembled by my friend, a profressional builder. He just built his and used a nearly identicle set-up.
H9 Edge 540 Moki 180 24 ounce tank (more then enough for 15+ minutes of flying) Pete's Model 3" Carbon Fiber spinner with lightened backplate Graphtec rc carbon fiber landing gear Graphtec rc carbon fiber tailwheel No pilot Hitec 5945s and Hitec 5645s on all surfaces (2 for the elevator) Pull pull on the rudder I didnt use dual packs or dual receviers as I did all to save weight. Now tell me why my plane wouldn't harrier? I used spoilerons and it didnt do much. go to www.3dbatix.com and watch a h9 edge almost crash from wingrocking in a harrier. This plane is just not up to date with the new standard of planes. I can 3D all my other planes with ease, especially harrier, its a simple manuever, but the h9 edge wouldn't do it. Sure it will hover and torque roll (really easy), do blenders and waterfalls and inverted/flat spins well, but there is a lot more to 3d then just that. I had the set-up for it, I had the power, I had probably the lightest set-up you can get besides using a lighter weaker motor, and I had the power on the surfaces with all digital servos. If it was me, I would look at something else, thats all. |
RE: Hanger 9 Edge 540?
I just know that mine was able to harrier pretty well. It was only in a low alpha harrier that it wing rocked some in a high alpha it was rock stable. One of my favorite 3d manevers with this plane was to do a parachute at about 100' and bring it down to the deck in a rock stable elevator. Yes, I did use a lighter engine and smaller fuel tank (14 ounce). But, I like to only fly 10 to 12 minutes at a time. The OS is a slightly weaker engine but only slightly. It is about 200 to 300 rpm shy of the Moki 180. But it is much lighter and has better fuel ecomony also. It was plenty for the H9 Edge to do all the manuevers. The H9 edge performed the best when it was at 11.5 pounds when fitted with a Satio 180. Mine weighted in a 12.25 pounds. What was your weight with the Moki 1.80, Shortman? This plane was designed to weight 11 to 13 pounds max. Mine weighed 13 pounds at the start but I put it on a diet and was able to drop 3/4 of a pound off the weight of the plane. I noticed the flight performance improved quite a bit. The only thing I wish is this plane had the wing area of the Dave Patrick Edge at 1200 sq inches.
