Flames on Planes...

1 Attachment(s)
I have to ask the question: do Flames belong on Planes?

I say yes, and as you will see from the attached pic showing my new Exclusiv-Modelbau Funtana colour scheme, Flames are awsome!

A friend of mine (LUV43DN) today said that Flames belong on Hot Rods... mind you, he is sporting a pretty good attempt at a Joe Dirt Mullet and has just bought a 1976 Toyota Corolla... what else you you expect him to say!

What do other people (without Mullets) think of my trim scheme? 10 points for anyone who can name the plane I based the design on.

I have drawn up the graphics on the computer and I'm going to cut them out of monokote/vinyl with my friends vinyl plotter (hence the overhang on the fuselage) I should have it covered sometime in the next few weeks. I'll post pics when it is finished.

Cheers

I think every plane would look better with flames.

The more flames the merrier! But only on the right plane, Oh and scale is the way to go!

Here's my effort, Extra 300L, 94" span, weight 18lb, Z62 for grunt.

I don't like flames on anything so my opinion is no.

I think flames are redundant, everyone has them, or every car that has an aftermarket paintjob has flames. I am all for new designs and something you make your own.

I know this is NOT flames, but you could do something with flames and you're own ideas and his tips...

I sure as @%#^ would rather see flames than PINK on a plane any day!:D

Rather tired of the pastels and I for one am happy to leave the eighties in the past.

Seriously, flames, checkerboard, drips etc are all great. This is a hobby. You like flames, burn that bird up!

Lefty,

Your flag looks great! You use windex to apply your covering, what is the main ingredient in that stuff? I don't think we have that same brand down here in New Zealand, I need something similar to apply monokote to oracover without getting air bubbles... would isopropyl alcohol work? or would that go up in flames! pardon the pun...

thanks

RE: Flames on Planes...

The windex forms a very thin film and holds the covering down very flat. Then the windex will evaporate out. Most brands of "windex" type window cleaners int he US have amonia in them and this can activatre the adhesives in some film coverings and make them stick. You can also use soapy water to stick them down temporarilly.

For best results you can then go back over just the edges AFTER all of your windex or other liquid has evaporated and dried with a low temp iron to seal the covering down. Or you can take a cotton swap dipped in acetone and run it along the very edge of the covering to "activate" the adhesive. The acetone works with monokote but not orocover/ultracote.

Do a search on windex and you will find some really good threads that discuss the technique in depth. Termagator does incredible stuff with this technique. Have tried it and have gotton really good results. Way better than trying to iron down overlays.

747 - I would is I could... Every time I recreate the jpg and upload, it refuses to display. I tried uploading in mozilla and it says the image contains an error?

I'll try something simple like taking a screen shot from Corel Draw and pasting that in here, I've never had this problem before... weird

Stay tuned

Ok, got it showing this time!

Here goes the beast, The red looks a little more like orange in this screenshot... also the blue is supposed to be metallic blue but you get the idea.

What do you think?
