Formula 3D flutter
 

I've been flying me nice new Modeltech Formula 3D over the weekend, flies great but am having to be REAL careful with the throttle to avoid flutter on the elevators, I can barely get up to knife-edge speed without it happening. I'm using the supplied hardware, and there doesn't appear to be too much play in the setup, tho I must admit I am only using standard servos at present.

Another more adept flier who flies a Hype had a go and commented on the same thing, so I'm happy it's not a case of just flying it too darn fast which we know it's not designed for. He also took a look at the linkages and didn't think the play was much different than on his hype which is also using standard servos.

Suggestions?

Chris,

Seal the control surface joins with diamond tape(sellotape but a lot stronger), this should help.

If its fiber hinges in the kit, as a last resort, I have used a drop of super glue in the middle of the hinge,
to stiffen them up, it solved my flutter problem on my Magic.


Engine , prop size, pich,your using ?


I have a Formula arriving in a couple of days, will be using a Saito 91 with it .

Yes, fibre hinges. Will try sealing the gaps, the ailerons were already fitted, hinged with cover so already sealed. Will also add a dab more cyno.

For motivation, using an OS 70 Surpas turning an apc 13x4 wide. Saito 91 will be nice, save adding that little bit of lead.

The only disappointing thing about the construction was the pre-cut stab slot, it was a little to wide for a snug fit and needed a little shimming. I also replaced the supplied rudder twin metal push rods with a convetional cable closed loop, and will probably replace the dural undercard with a wire one that will be a little more forgiving than the rigid dural one and save the fus. One last tip, keep the box and turn it into a wing carry case!

Chris how does the plane 3D? Is it even worth having a look at?

My 3D ain't up too much, hence the purchase, it 3D's better than I'm capable of, put it that way! Physically it is pretty similar to a Hype, so on the face of it I would imagine they are comparable, but I don't know what effect the dis-similarities would have. I've seen it do a lot of things, apparantly very well, but for a better reponse you're better off asking someone with better 3D skills than myself.
