magix extra or twist 3d?

Hello, I have a gms .47 that wants a home. I am new to 3d and would like to give it a try. What are your opinions on the hangar 9 twist 3d vs the modeltech magic extra? How will they perform with the .47 and a 12.25x3.75 prop?

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

Both will perform well. IMO, the Twist is the better built of the 2(just a little). I also believe the Twist is the slightly better flier of the 2.

Guess which one I'm leaning towards???;)

But like I said.....both will perform well...

My Twist sucks and the LHS owner reports other unhappy Twist owners.
I was just reading about the Magic in this forum, it's well liked. But oddly enough, so is the Twist, which is why I bought one.

I have a Twist with a 47 GMS. It hovers at 1/2 throttle. It will blast out of a hover doing rolls on the way up. No problem. I did have to add some weight to the nose though using that engine.

my twist is great!! i just got back from another successful flying day. I have an OS 46AX and a tower muffler. i couldnt decide between the 12.25x3.75 or the 12x4 APC props......so i tried both. by far i liked the 12x4 better. unlimited vertical. i can take off in about 8-10 ft, and go strait up vertically :D its so much fun!!! good luck with your decision

It does suck when its not tweaked out. Once you dial it in I guarantee you will change your mind...

One caution on the Magic Extra. The covering peels off real easy, especially up front (you know, where all the fuel soaked wood resides...).

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

get the twist. i have had both and the twist is my favorite. compared to the ME its a piece of cake to build. it also has way bigger control surfaces (well, on the tail) I have had 2 magic extras and on both there were screw ups (blind nuts in firewall in the wrong place, landing gear bolt holes in the wrong place) also, IMO, the ME has a stupid elevator pushrod design. go for the twist and you'll be in the air in half the time, its got better hardware, less complicated and its cheaper too! i thought it would be hard to hover because its so short but i'm finding it easier then the ME. BTW don't get the 12.25X3.75. I had one on my tt46 and while it gives plentry of thrust, it is a very heavy prop and has a flywheel effect on the motor. right now i'm running an apc 11X4 which still gives me very good vertical and lets the engine spool up/down quicker.

I owned Magic Extra, and I flew my friend's Twist twice. Both are similar in price range, size, and flying. My friend's Twist was nose heavy for 3D (he got 6 oz of lead under engine) and not propped for 3D, yet it did very well. I think Twist is capable of being better than Magic Extra, if set up right. It has larger rudder, thicker wing, and easier to achieve a 3D-aft CG. I rember having to jam my battery pack into the tail w/ a customized hatch for my Magic Extra.

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

I have a modeltech simply magic which is virtually the same as the magic extra. I got this plane because my LHS took too long to order a twist. I had a 40 trainer before this and they do fly differently and it took me a couple of flights to get used to it. but after that its a great plane. i haven't had any trouble thus far and i have about 10 flights on it. i became so comfortable with it so fast that on about the 3rd or 4th flight i was doing rolls, loops, inverted passes, and really low high-speed fly-bys. once trimmed out it will fly perfectly strait. i have a magnum .52 and a 12.25 x 3.75 prop and it seems perfect. my friend has a magic extra with the same engine but said he was going to switch to this prop because of the way mine flys.

my twist actually came in yesterday (after about 3 months from hobbytown) and i may go and buy it just to have an extra and compare the two. i'll let yakow how it goes.

I have the twist and it is a fun plane to fly. I would like to move onto another plane so I am selling my twist. Here is a link to the ad.

Ther Twist is an all around great plane, not only for the 3D aspect but also just plane fun to fly. I have a Twist with a Saito .72 and am running a 13 x 6 and have great control.

I have had to do a couple of deadstick landing due to flying to long and glided the plane in with no damage. Huge wing surfaces and great throw rates. I currently have mine set to 125%.

Good Luck

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

I've got about 120 flights on my Magic Extra and I have flown the Twist as well. I think both are great flying planes. Both are really fun-flys but the Twist is probably more 3D capable. The Majic is my favorite goof-around plane, and the only one that I will fly in strong cross winds.

I am either going to recover the Magic Extra or replace it with a Twist. The covering on the Magic Extra is about the worst I've ever seen on an ARF. Every time I fly it something new peels off. Might not be so bad with a four stroke.

There is no way I would recommend the Magic unless Model Tech has improved their covering process.

I don't own a magic but I do have a twist. A friend has a magic and it looks a mess. I guess it's the covering peeling. I use a 46 fx on mine with no complaints at all. Can't see why you would need more power than that. It's a blast.

i have mastered my trainer and have some 3d experience on an extreme 330.would the magic extra be a good second plane for me.

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

I do think the Magic Extra would be a good second plane. The only thing I'd do different from the instructions is to add wires to the tail for stability. I've lost one due to the horizontal stab coming off in flight and have read of others meeting their demise this way. Its a fun plane to fly.

I recently bought a magic extra as a back up plane for my global freestyle and have to say I am very disappointed in how it flies. I have to provide constant corrections to any aerobatics I attempt, my freestyle tracks straight as an arrow in all situations.

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

i have owned every magic and the best is the simply magic IMO but they are pretty much the same plane. mine goes to the field with me nomatter what i dont care how much wind it flys and it will do anything you ask from it. it harriers great . and when you do a wall its right on i mean it looks like it just hit a wall and climbed right up it . i too was flying w a 12.25x375apc untill recently and i tryed a 11x4 and now it screams its even better. thers only one problem with the magics and thats there covering they must have went out of there way to get the cheapest they could find . the covering IMO is a P.O.S. the fuel soaks right through it and it comes appart very easy. but i will still take this plane over the twist anyday. my twist on second flight the wing dowell came out and guess what happend then. but it looked good. and that all i have to say about that.

Has anybody got a YT Magic Formula 3d? how does that compare with the Twist and Magic?
I am looking for a good trainer 3D model which I can learn 3D with and which will be able to do the lot when I am ready.
Any thoughts what I should be looking at?

Magic extra, slightly tail heavy, os50sx, is very cool, i can hover, flat spin, knife, blenders, when i do it its ugly, but the plane will do it.

RE: magix extra or twist 3d?

i have a magic extra with a .52 magnum and currently 12x4 prop and overall it's a nice plane for the price. it's very good for 3d, but it doesnt track as well as i'd like for pattern maneuvers. the c.g. recommended in the instructions is way too far forward. you'll need to move it back by at least an inch for it to fly well.

in knife edge, there's more coupling than i'd like. rolls arent perfectly axial (but good enough), and it doesnt track perfectly straight. the covering does come off too easily. but other than this, it's a great plane that'll do almost any manuever the pilot is capable of. i never was able to hover before, but learned pretty quickly on this one. it was surprisingly easy compared to my other planes.

I have A ME with an OS50 and the 12.25*3.75. The CG has to be moved back to fly right and keep in mind this is a fun fly plane that is well over powered so watch the speed. And yes the covering is the worst I have ever seen. May be able to seal it at the edges with some type of paint /sealer that would be so nice but do it first before you ever start it.
