Elevator to ground floor....
Hey all,
Who is the wise guy that pressed the basement button during that elevator... opps... I guess it was me :( Guys, I am starting to pick up 3D and got the elevator down pat, I decided last night to try and step into a harrier. Now I thought I could just add some throttle to maintain altitude and transform into a harrier. At first I was doing it pretty high and it just looked like I would add enough throttle and the plane would just hang there. any more and it would just get more vertical. I couldn't get any horizontal movement out of it. So I was getting brazen and I elevatored down nice and close so I could see the plane well (20ft off the deck) and a few clicks of throttle got it to just hover there. I added more power to try and pull it forward and the darn thing pulled vertical and went right inot a torque roll. I wasn't ready for it and I didn't exit successfully. Down in the weeds, allot of damage to the wing on the 1/4 scale G-202. Don't think it's salvagable. Hind sight being 20/20 as it always is, should I have let some of the elevator throw go rather then just holding in the max 3D rate? Why did she bust straight inot a torque roll from the elevator? What can I do next time to get her to harrier? Rick |
Elevator to ground floor....
Relax some elevator at the bottom as your transitioning from the elevator to the harrier. Get the forward motion going then add more elevator to hold the harrier.

Elevator to ground floor....
Ahh yeah, what Wayne said. Elevator to landing doesn't sound so healthy to the plane he he. I some times have to relax the elevators to do a better Elevator, huu?, and when transitioning from Elevator to Harriers, definetely relax elevtors as you add power. And if you are going to do Harrier landings, make sure you have a tuff tail gear he he.

Working on it also...
3D greenhorn here as well and I'm working on harriers pretty heavy as of late. I've found it's a modulation of throttle and elevator combined that can produce forward motion without altitude change.
If you just hold full elevator, it will stand up under power. And like you said, that's not good if you are not ready for it. Also, don't run too much expo in your 3D elevator rate. It ruins the 'feel' of the stick and makes it hard to modulate the elevator as it all wants to come in at once. I'm down to 45% expo and going lower. |
Elevator to ground floor....
Hey That's good info on the expo. I was at around 80%. I had a near miss with not enough expo once and guess I'm biased to far to one side now. Guess I'll have to wait for the next one to try less... Can't wait for the Edge 540 to come in ;-)

Elevator to ground floor....
RickP,
I have a Giles also with a Brison 2.4 What is your setup and prop to allow 3D? Are you flying with a 8U or 9C radio? If so, can you send me a copy of your setup? I am interested in throws and expo settings? I have looked at going to 3D but was timid. If you are using 80% expo, I think I could manage that! |
Landing from an elevator...sort of ?!?
I did close on the same a little while ago...thankfully was so close to the ground it took 6" of the wing tip (new panel built) and broke the rudder servo gears.
The only thing i found is if you juggle the elevators you need to be carefull as let go too much or it will tip stall on ya!...well mine does!!...not the sort of thing you wanna find 2' of the deck!! :D |
Elevator to ground floor....
Hey I don't have one of those radios, but I did copy down all of my settings. I have them at home and will repost them later. But don't do what I did! With this set up you can fly normal in high rates if you stay real close to center. You won't even notice. Like I said, it's a bit much though.
Once or twice It felt so comforatble I forgot I had them on (Real wake up call let me tell you). The plane should be more sensitive on high rates so you can tell for sure, before you snap roll it. Rick ps - isn't the gasser a little much for this plane? I had a OS 1.6 FX with a Pro zinger 18-8. Was hovering at less then half throttle, but would struggle to pull out vertically. |
Elevator to ground floor....
I mostly fly with 1/2 or less throttle and only go to full for vertical up-lines. The only time I really needed the extra power was during a landing approach, a beginner pulled out on the runway and I gave too much up elevator. Instead of letting it stall, I gave to the gas and it went ballistic. I was very surprised!
The plane is heaver than most. I had to replace the landing gear and a couple of other pieces of hardware. |
