Magic set up needed to hover
 

Hi,
I have a magic with 225 metal gear servos a enya 45cx with a 11x4 prop. I get it up and it wants to tip nose down. I have trouble holding it with the rudder.
What cg are people using?
What deflections are you using?

Are you torq rolling or hovering the magic??

are you holding it from torqing with the ailerons

Any direction to some good 3d instructions would be appreciated thanks !!!

My CG is about 5" back from the leading edge. I am still learning to hover, but it doesn't seem like it'll be too hard to master.

I have a tt46 pro on mine with all standard servos with about 3 or more oz or led on it and it hovers great.

Hello,
On my magic i run a OS 46 LA and 11/4 prop. It hovers very easily and has unlimited vertical. I used standard servos all around and high rate throw is all i could get on rudder and elevator. It does a great upright flat spin also.

Boy I tried all day to hover it. no luck
I have mega deflection and it is balanced 5 inches back and I tried further too
it wants to drop the nose in any direction
I get it hovering and it wiggles out against max deflection. It is like I dont have the throws but I do ??
I think the engine may not spool to fast in sort birsts as well. I have a enya 45 on it what prop would be good ??

I put a ported os 32 with tuned pipe in it. I have 225 mg servos in it with a 10x4 prop. It is light !! I had a enya 45 and the throttle was too slow to respond. I hovered it climbed decended and a little torq rolling it is a hard one to torq roll for sure. Thanks for all the help and yup it is doable after all.

Do they make them for bigger engines?

Did the engine change make it easier to hover, or was it a bit more practice that did the trick?

Just finishing my first magic, so far i have it set up with a GMS 47 12.25X 3.75 prop, standard servos except for everything ecept throtle - HS 81 mini. 350 mAh battery

Opinions?

Hovering the Magic
 

I flew my Magic for the first time tonight. I have a TT Pro .46 with the recommended APC 12.25 x 3.75 prop. CG is right on the manufacturer's recommendation by cutting a hole to install the battery pack in the belly behind the wing. I also took the time to laterally balance the model by taping a large washer on the underside of the wing near the tip to offset the weight of the diagonally mounted engine.
Hovering was a breeze with this setup. If you are capable of pulling off a hover, this airplane does it nicely, although it moves around a little more than a larger plane, causing you to be quicker on the tail inputs to keep it from falling out. The key to any hover is getting the airplane exactly vertical prior to trying to hang it on the prop. I'm not good at torque rolls yet so I held it from rotating with those huge ailerons. When I let it start rotating, I lose the tail and it drops out. My fault, not the airplane. I will practice that some more. Mine hovers at about 5/8 throttle and pulls up and out with authority. I must say this is the most fun I've had with a .46 powered airplane. I still like my 4*60 better but this one will be fun to throw around and practice with. I may need to adjust the thrust line slightly for the best performance possible.

The pipe is a helimax for 30 size helicopters actually. that os is a heli engine in there. it is blue print ported and has some good power for a 30. I still like the 45 in the magic better but mine was a enya45. It is a powerfull engine but the mid range was way too rich. Fast power is what is needed. The 32 was an experiment. rather than doing the right thing buying a new good 45. Luckily I got great results. I could use the horse power though for sure. My magic is killer light. 225 mini all around and a micro servo for throttle. the 32 size engine and no lead make it real light also NIMH save weight on the batt too. and I get 1200 mah. I also used some kevlar thread for tail guide wires. they work great and install in 5 min and is light light and strong as steel.

Bevis Can you show how that kevlar thread is attached? It is not clear just how it attached and I think I,d like to plagarize your tech. "-)

I dipped push pins. Thicker ones in ca and inserted them in the balsa. I then started the kevlar on one and wrapped the middle then tied it off on the last pin. You can do top and bottom wires. Kevlar thread soaks ca so I centered the rudder and made sure I had propper tension then a drop of ca on the thread at the pins and it is soid like a rock. kevlar thread does not strech so it is super rigid super light and strong as it gets. I did this with all my mods at the same time so I dont know the amount this individual thing added but my rudder is way more precise than it was. Im also not worried about it breaking off any second when I do snaps.

I hover mine at 1/4 throttle with a YS 53 at 5000 ft. The four stroke is perfect for this at low throttle; plus I put in -75 (Futaba) throttle expo which gives me 3 clicks of adjustment during hovering. With this set-up I can do great tail slides. I can only get 1 1/2 turns in a torque roll before it falls out. BTW I do this all on low rates because I feel you tend to over-correct.

I just received my Magic yesterday and after looking at the tail that beavis displayed I am going to try and use the same method I used on my Edge. Here are some pics of how I layed the Kevlar.

The Thread is ran through nyrod and CAed at each joint then tied at an eyebolt on the bottom of plane.

I built my MAGIC on Monday, a week ago. It was a rainy/windy day in Chicago. I flew the snot out of it all last week . Using a ball bearing .46, I tried a few different props, including the APC 12.25 x 3.75 everyon brags about. I didn't like that prop as well as an 11x4 that I have settled on.

It hovers fine now, although it does move around alot faster than other bigger planes I have used. My CG is right at 5", maybe 5 1/8". The square pack battery is next to the throttle servo and there is about an ounce and a half of lead on the tail. The plane balances laterally. Throws are MAX-MAX-MAX . The engine head is down at a 45 degree angle, putting the muffler squarely between the main landing gear.

This is a cool airplane. You get alot of bang for the $99 price tag and fast assembly. And it does an almost unbelievale inverted flat spin. I took it to our clubs annual picnic yesterday. It was a hoot.

I've got a strong little .40 OS LA laying around. I plan on putting it on a Magic. Will I be able to hover it and if so what prop should I use, thanks. :D

Yes it should easily hover with the .40la.

I have a TT.42 bushing engine with a 11x5 prop on mine and it hovers easily at less than 1/2 throttle. I have just used the 11x5 prop and am very happy with it. I am just starting to experiment with this plane.

Try a 11x5 or 11x4 prop and let us know what you think.

by the way, so far this plane is awesome.
