What is the best 3d plane around? Edge,Cap,Extra or some other design like the Knife or pro twister?

There is alot of opposing opinions on this, of course.

But, for torque rolling, it would probably be the Edge, Extra, Giles, and then Cap.

For harriers and elevators probably the Edge, Cap, Extra, then Giles.

And, a properly setup any of them will probably beat out an improperly setup any of them.

How's all that for ambiguity? ;)

How's this for opposing opinion? From my experience (see how I ditch culpability?) I'd rate them as follows:
For Torque Rolling: Cap, Giles, Edge, Extra. Most Cap's have excellent rudders and effective elevators in sub-stall. Most extra's lack the rudder authority to torque roll well.
For Earriers/Elevators: Cap, Edge, Giles Extra Again, most Extra's are poorly suited for sub stall manuvering.
Waterfall's: Giles, Cap, Edge, Extra.
Precision: Extra, Giles, Cap, Edge.
There are always exceptions... There are 3 excellent 3D Extra's availible; the Radiocraft 330, Troy Built VonExtra 260, and the Fiberclassics 330l.
There are several lousy Cap's for 3D; The World Models, Yellow aircraft, Midwest (heavy) and the Sig.
For 3D we must have; 1) light weight (under 12 lbs for 1050 sq/in.). 2) large control surfaces. i.e. full span ailerons, 50/50 or 60/40 moving vs. non-moving area for the tail. 3) High deflction rates, 45 deg.+. 4) Power loadings exceeding 1.5/1 thrust/weight. 5) Thick airfoils, they soften the stall characteristics.

For Torque Rolling: Cap, Giles, Edge, Extra. Most Cap's have excellent rudders and effective elevators in sub-stall. Most extra's lack the rudder authority to torque roll well.

Caps are tougher to torque because their stab is very high and their main wing low. You have to tilt them back to torque them... it's harder to keep your prespective. An Edge with its inline wings and prop... sits straight up and down while torque'n. Much easier visually to keep things orientated. The Extra is better than the Cap in this regard, too. And, the 330s have plenty of tailfeather authority (and it's about the only difference between them and the 300s).

You do relize its the pilot and not the plane.

Buy the one you like the looks of best. Its a hard choice, I understand, they all look bad ass!

Except the Staud, I never really grooved with the looks of it.

He really gives that Edge some high praise! I think the Caps are great 3Ders, too. Just not as good as the Edge in the TR'n department. I'm going to get mine wired yet, though. :)

Back to McConville... great pilot, and outstanding product engineer. Kudos all around!

The best 3D plane I have found to be a MORRIS KNIFE... It will do anything your heart desires and if you get a case of dumb thumbs it won"t cost you 2 or 3 thousand dollars. Ken.... The "BALSA BANDIT"

Every airframe is different. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. For Elevators, Harriers, hovering on the deck and torque rolls the Edge is tops. The CAP will out tumble anything but it doesn't Hover or torque so well. The Extra is in the middel. Its weakness is in that it will wing walk in harriers and elevators more than others seem to. THere just isn't one airframe that does everything the best. THe stab and wing placement changes characteristics.

Well it was hard to do. I had to increase the rpms with 90% nitro and put on some super large, low pitched props and--------

Wait a minute, that was my Morris. The B-17 was done with Paint Shop Pro 7 and a little cut and paste and airbrush and contrast and sharpening and some other cool toys.


I just saw so many cool hovering pics here that I had to join in :-)

THe Radiocraft is the sweetest bird that I have ever flown. It is just so true in its manners. I have a Carden 35 Edge ready to hit the bench but it will have to be a lot of plane to beat out the Radiocraft Extra. I do like the Edge better for Elevators and Harriers. A buddy has the Carden 40% and it is very nice. I think between the 2 I will have IMAC and my 3D covered. I have some pics on my sitewww.fly3drc.com/bean.htm

I'm going to be flying Jason Shulman's FC from the bleachers during the freestyle (he'll just be TX-synching)... he'll fly the IMAC himself. ;-)

Does a plane "have" to be a high $$ item to be a good 3D plane?
I am flying an Edge profile that will do anything the 5 gazzilion dollar planes will do and in most cases better. Torque rolling is tough but it will do it and all this for just a couple hundred $ or less RTF.
Don't get me wrong, I loves the big uns' but for 3D the lite little rascals are fun an I can have 2 flights in before the big uns' are put together.

Mike, you are missing the whole thrill of it all. It is the addrenalin pump that you get from that $4500 bird getting way squirrelly that makes us fly the big ones. I have eaten holes in my shorts big enough to fly through a couple of times :) It just isn't any fun putting in a Laser 3D... It just crashes....

Yepper.........The ole PF! :eek: Know it well.

Got a couple birds that are higher end and love to fly them but for just doing the dumb stuff right off the deck the profiles are my cup of tea.
One of these days, well it amost happened, I am getting a 40%+ bird. Had a Giles bought RTF then I quit my job of 18 years and my buddy let me back out.
For now think I will stick 80" and below stuff. Maybe spring :)

Hi Mike!

You're right... you can do everything with the little guys... and they don't put you in hawk if they crash. But, 33%, DOD (down on the deck), close enough to touch it?... just can't get that thrill from one of the little guys. :cool:

I have a morris hobbies Hot Hots. Im not sure how this happened but my dads weighs about 6 pounds and mine weighs about 4. They both have OS 46's on them. Does anyone think they will be good 3D flyers?

P.S. mine is a lot newer than my dads i havent got a chance to break it in yet
