I just got this ready to cutt
And just incase someone has not a sense of humor I have nothing against 3W Randy |
Hey YNOT!
Do you have a web address or physical address for the meet at Brazoria County field?
I fly with BCF in Houston and see you flying every weekend. I think you in particular have shown respect to all the flyers at Scobee and wait until everyone is down before flying your 3D stuff. No one goes up when you are flying but that is only because we are all sitting in the pits watching you do your stuff.....it's entertaining. If we were exposed to the same type of flying day in day out, RC would get boring. Although warbirds are my favourite, I sure as hell wish I had your skill. Is my nose brown? :D Happy Flying (warbirds, 3D or whatever) |

Are you stopping rotation with ailerons or are all the pics taken at that position? Will it TR.
I have an extas that hovers well with an OS 91 looks about the same maybe a little bigger weighs in at 6 lbs. Having other members complain about 3D as well. Unfortunate its fun to do and watch. Maybe its a jealousy thing most of them can't land. Who knows. I try to stay out of there way. Pretty soon 3Der's will need to start clubs for that type of flying only. |

blowin dirt, I get the same thing where I fly. I always 3D out at the very last pylon, away from everyone and their pattern. I do this even if no one is flying at the time and often I wait for that moment when everyone seems to stop flying. However, I always get complaints. What I do know is that when I see someone doing something that looks interesting and difficult, I always make way so that I can observe and hopefully learn from what I see. Besides how can anybody ignore the grace of an aircraft 3Din' right in front of them while they're just flyin'round. I think I'd rather just land, watch and learn.

So what I've learned is that we're blending helicopters and planes.
Tell me the last time you saw a full size plane tail dragging on a runway 2" off the ground. You won't, can't and never will. The fact is that we've surpassed the point of these things being planes and now they are helicopters with wings. It's cool to see, it's abnormal for a plane, and fun to try....but it's not a plane...it's a flat wing helicopter... It's kind of stupid too, reminds me of the guy who hogs the runway on touch and gos instead of flying a pattern performance and keeping the rest of us from having fun. jw  |

Hockeypilot,
First of all, there not helis with flat wing. Helis do real 3d.(backward inverted hehehe) Second, I have a clip of a full size 540 doing a wall, going into a harrier right AFTER TAKE OFF. Third, What is a "performance pattern". If its "normal" aerobatic's I have had somone say somthing about me doing aerobatic's at the field about the very same thing. All the old guys just want to do is laps. Thats fine but done tell me how to fly. Im not dagerous. I keep a good distans from the pit, watch for other pilots, etc...etc.... Last but not least. What's the guy doing touch and goes have to do with you flying 100 to 200ft above him???? But any way I think this thread was about fun flying and sharing info not crying about other people's flying. peace!! |

I say it doesn't really matter how you fly as long as you enjoy it and are having fun. Thats what it's all about right. It doesn't surprise me though, that someone wants to tell another how they should or shouldn't behave. As long as you are not risking your, or anyone elses safety, I say go for it. I think we could all learn a little from capable 3D pilots.Even if a real plane can't hover, so what. That does not make it stupid. It would be stupid not to pursue it now that the genre has been established. Face it we live in a world of change, and who knows we might even learn something in the meantime.

No big deal, do what you want and have fun.
don't get stressed about it. jw |

3D flying rules, and is the most fun you can have.
If somebody say's it isn't flying it's because they can't fly like this and are just jealous ! TORK THAT BABY ! |
Re: addy
Well Ynot..if you cannot fly in a forward motion..you might as well just HANG around

The Russian sukoi with a turbo prop is getting really close to hovering. With the advancements in composites I believe we will see a full size hover maybe even touch the tail. Hope I'm there.
I want to bring up another point regarding 3d. I'm not trying to stir the pot just open discussion. It may help prevent unneccasary rules. If you think about it during 3D maneuvers the airplanes forward speed is very slow. I'm more concerned about the 140mph jet than the 40% 3Ders. If something goes wrong the plane won't make it far. The airplane needs very coordinated and well timed inputs. If the motor or radio quits it will pile right there not a 100 yards away. I would rather be hit by a 40% with a 150 than a heli with composite rotors. And as far as the pilot standing to close they posses skill levels way above most and he/she probably has the confidence and capability to do it safely. I think its awesome and hope to stand next to my 40% during a TR someday. |

AMEN, BROTHER! And what's funny, the 140mph'ers never get reprimanded.

Sukhoi 31B
Just got back from the Grand Prix of aerobatics here in Japan and seen Jurgis Kairys hover his SU-31B, 400 hp radial, would not pull up out of a hover but he could sustain one for 15-20 seconds.

3D
Great to see this thread going again.
3D is at the far end of the spectrum of flight. Its always breaking new ground and gaining popularity. The skill level of the pilots doing it low and slow have better control over that plane then most of the people flying helis. I fly helis too, so I can say that. :-) Sean Tucker was absolutely amazed at what R/C airplanes can accomplish. It just our power to weight ratio. It was fun telling Sean how to do things. 3D is not only hovering, its all the things that can be done at little to no forward speed. Down here in South Texas, we fly in wind and fly the planes backwards, knife edge hovering, suicide slides, backward flips, backwards landings in addition to rolling harriers and many of the more popular 3D tricks. Most days when I fly, I just want to find what I can make the plane do, then figure out how to do it again. Everyone has their thing. For some its the pure thrill of taking off and landing and not breaking a prop. For others its the excitement of taking a box of stick and turning it into a flying machine. And for some of us nut-cases, its bouncing the tail on the ground or seeing if we can only remove the monokote off the top of the rudder on a inverted pass. We are all bound in this hobby by the love of airplanes and flying them. We should all be respectful of what others do. What I like to do, may not be what you like to do, but it doesn't change the fact we all love airplanes. Will 3D become more popular. YES! Just look at the new rules for IMAC freestyle and the XFC. Now with Artistic being recognized, it may open up more comps for those who don't have 8 grand to put into a big IMAC plane. For those of you who don't like it. Get over it. Not many people liked Elvis, television, computers or the Internet when it was new. Now its part of Eveready life. 3D, the Slim Shady of radio control. On a more somber note. I have had to retire the Madness. After almost 2 years of flying and several hundreds of flights, not a single crash, the airframe just can't take it anymore. Not to say it didn't suffer its fair share of damage, a few midairs, every control surface ripped off, back half of the fuse breaking off doing a tail sweep and the physical abuse it has been though pulling all those G's, it was time to hang it up. The servos will stay in it as it now hangs next to the retired Hovering Cobra. A replacement for the Madness is on the way, a Flip 3D. Also designed by CPLR, I am expecting great things from this plane. I'm currently putting the tweeks on a UCD. I will post some tail touching pics of it, soon as someone shows with a camera. |

You know, it ain't just 3D. I fly pattern and get the same load of crap from the geriatric bunch.
Well, maybe I don't WANT to fly a WWI bipe 14 mph in a racetrack pattern! If that's all I could do, I think I'd take up stamp collecting, it'd be more exciting. I'm flying a pattern, which means a turn around back and forth type of flight, at 150 meters out. I constantly get "WHICH WAY YOU FLYIN???" Uh......BOTH ways????? Sheesh. Ya know, you have to be respectful, but I swear sometimes it doesn't work both ways. I feel like the poster boy for aerobatic public relations sometimes I'm so affable, but these guys test my limits. What's funny these guys are the same ones that continually crash into the pits, buzz the pilot box (I had to hit the deck this morning because of a stray trainer....not a new guy either) and generally fly on the edge of a stall, and they ain't 3Ding =) had one geezer plant one right over my head on the roof of the pits. had to climb the ladder on my van to get the plane, and sweep Kadet debris off my roof so I could leave. And yet somehow MY flying is a problem..... And tomorrow, I'll go, I'll smile, I'll duck when flown at, I'll hop when one runs under my feet, and with any luck I won't even break my line =) What choice do I have? Fields are rare around here. I can work with it or pick another hobby. I like what I'm doing too much, even with all the complaining and dodging stray planes. And next week I'll take this new G Trick and start learning some freestyle stuff, heh, they ought to love that. I know some of the guys that fly there post here.....so if you're reading this, you either know what I'm talking about or you're one of them =) -Mike |
