P51 Hovering?
 

Will my Top flight P51 1/7, 60 size, be able to hover with its saito 100 ?

Whats the best prop. for hovering? low pitch/large diameter?

I don't think I've ever seen a warbird hover. If you do, try to get a video. I'd like to see that!

why is it unusual?? is the saito 100 enough for my bird?

ofcourse i gonna try it! video, ofcourse! :) perhaps i need like 30% nitro fuel or something. but.

Put a 15X4W or 16x4W and it probably would. It would be a lot harder than any other airplane made for 3D , but a skilled enough pilot could do it.

I have a trainer and a T-34 that I can hover and TR but when they fall out there's no stopping them so keep plenty of height or you'll have one less plane :D

Don't use 30% nitro in your Saito 100. I did and overheated my engine while flying. It was a new engine and I still had it set very rich. Got hot, melted the pressure tube off the muffler nipple and killed my engine resulting in a crash. And yet, I have heard of other ppl using 30% heli mix and liking it... go figure...

perhaps your cowl was to enclosed?:D

ive been thinking a lot about the aileron positions and how the position of them affect the posibility to control the hovering. Is there any connection?

That really doesnt make sense. My engine, though I have to richen it a couple clicks runs cooler with the 30%. I have had no problems with it. I dont use it all the time due to fuel cost but I like it alot.

One of the Saito engine traits (all mine at least) is that they will still run at a far leaner setting than many other brands. Other brands start coughing or losing lots of power before the Saito's do when you lean them right out.
If you went from 5% (or whatever) nitro to 30% heli fuel, you have just leaned out your engine sh#tloads. All that extra nitro equates to extra oxygen to burn, if you dont richen it up to counter all this extra oxygen, it will run leaner, and hotter.

Blue Moon if i think correctly the ailerons are outboard on your TF P-51 and whilst hovering the control comes from the prop wash over the surfaces so i dont think you would have much if any aileron control (unless you have one big ass prop:)) so you wount get much control on that axis but as they say there is only oneway to find out;)

hovering a scale P-51 is like playing basketball with a football, sure you can do it but its not going to work very well.

If you moved the CG back far enough, increased the size of the elvator/rudder..... Why am I even going there - it is a P-51 for gods sake!!

I bet you can hover for a few seconds, but you wont be able to control it!!!! They plane is a pig already, no control surfaces to aid it and lastly, its not meant to fly tail heavy.....It'll be hell keeping it in the air!! Good luck but my bets are on a short uncontrolled hover that may last a couple of seconds. If at all possible i would love for you to prove me wrong--(p-51 in a hover would be reallly cool but..................)Good luck, but what I'm guessing will happen is that you will have a really powerful mustang!!

I hovered a Roadkill P-38 with two twin motor systems at the JR Indoor Fest. Now that was funny!

Run that P51 like it needs to be run FAAAAAASSSTTTTTTand SMOOOOOOOOOTH!

A low altitude high speed screamin past beats a good hover any day.;)

no no no no no, just no, those surfaces just aren't big enough, you need nice big 3D surfaces to move the slipstream from the prop. It will be an absolute pig.
P51 is for shooting down focke wulfs and ME109 when did you ever see a P51 prop hanging over a runway, it just ain't real, guns are pointing the wrong way anyway.

I would guess a hover is possible,but with the size of control surfaces and modest deflection,you wont have much authority over it.The main problem is,when she falls out,the recovery will be difficult if not impossible.Try it at least 200 feet up,which is enough to catch her maybe,but is difficult to see your inputs to hold anything steady.
