Help with indoor shocky spec.

Andrew,

I was impressed with the way Matt's and your shock flyers handled the confines of the gym on Friday. My 15 ounce FF Yak was a lot of fun but I think I kept it post-stall the whole time to slow it down!:D

I am trying to duplicate Matt's airplane since it looked to be the lightest and is made from off-the-shelf products. I have the shockflyer, RX, and motor on order already. I need some help 'cause I forgot what battery (2s1p TP but what mah and discharge?) and prop (GWS Hyperdrive but what dia. and pitch?) he was using.

Any hints and suggestions that you have would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help and I hope that Phil gets us that venue a few more times this Winter.

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

JC,

Friday was a great time I wish I could have made it earlier. On the shockflyers we have done some testing to see what works the best and what doesnt. On Matts shockflyer he had the 2204 on a 10x6 hyperdrive and 2 cell thunderpower 730mah. He was using dymond 4.4 g servos. On these servos he is having a hard time with them locking out. I am using gws picos the 5.4g ones or hitec 50's as they are the lightest that seem to work the best. On the shockflyer I flew I used 2 servos on the ailerons as I feel that you have much more authority and are able to get rid of the differential you will inevitably get with the 1 servo set up. I think matts was about 5.5 oz ready to fly and mine was 5.8 with 2 aileron servos.

Also we are not using the back piece of carbon on the wing. My brother and I did some testing and we ended up getting about the same flex with the carbon as with out. That saves some weight right there. If you have any more questions let me know.

Andrew,

Cool, thanks for the advice! I did see that Matt's elevator servo was having problems.

I liked your dual aileron servo setup - but I already have a 4-channel Berg DSP RX ready to go[:@].

I had to back-order the TP packs from Horizon through Riders in Ypsi - must be the hot pack for indoors this year!

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

Devin,

My shockflyer was with a 730 tp pack. I know I could go lighter with a 480 but the new Hacker seems to be powered great with the 730's.

JC, My Riders in Taylor has 3 of these packs left. Let me know if you want them I think we can transfer them to that store.

Andrew,

I PM'd you with my info. If you can pull off the transfer of TP packs (2) to the Ypsi store that would be great.

Thanks!

I saw a fella yesterday, Scott was his name, flying a pair of Shockflyer Yak's with 2204/54s in them. They looked great! Where can the average guy buy the Yak?......Hobby Lobby dosen't have them on their website.

Mike,

I know scott personally he ordered his from hobby lobby and had them red labeled in so he could get them flying. I have mine done and it flys awesome.

Andrew,

I just about got my Superstar Shockflyer ready to fly. I have a question:

1. What is a good CG for 3D? The manual says 40-60 mm but that looks conservative. BTW, if 40mm is the spot I would have to put the battery in the nose. That little AXI is really light!

Thanks,

JC

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

JC,

I usually go with about 60 as it gives the best for 3d and precision flying.

On the TP 730's we just got done with inventory so hopefully I can get these out to you asap.

you will really enjoy how much better these fly light .... if anyone els has gone through a progressions as i have you know what I'm talking about .. i have two set ups one at 8.6 oz and one at 5.6 the 8.6 does not get flown in anything but so much wind you cant fly the other one :)

Shock,

You are so true. The lighter they are the better they fly. I also feel that they fly so much slower so if you do crash they wont get hurt at as bad.

The lighter the weight the less mass there is to try to push the back of the plane into the front. You don't build to crash you build to fly. I am shooting for 4.5 on the new one I am going to have my son help me build. and I think without a motor or battery change this is about as light as it can get

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

Ron,

When u say 4.5 is that with a battery or no? If so how are you doing this ?

Yep the one I have now is 4.8 with a 340 2 cell pack I am going to change a few other things and then maybe I can get to 4.5 there is very little graphite in the 4.8 oz one and I will have less in the 4.5 one

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

Just this past weekend I became en-lightened. I replaced the motor in my Shocky Extra 330 from AXI 2208/26 to a LensRC 17 turn CD Rom motor. This motor makes even the little AXI 2204 look a bit big, but what a little powerhouse! I also went to the Kokam 340 from the TP1320. I shaved off 4 about ounces of weight and the plane flies like a dream! I can actually sustain a torque roll now where before it was a chore for me to do more than one roll without falling out. Maybe I just finally got the hang of it, but I don't think that's all there it to it. The plane flies much better!

What's more, is the tiny LensRC CD Rom motor only cost $36 and the little Kokams are cheaper too. How often in RC can you spend less and get better performance?

Here is a link to LensRC. http://www.lensrc.com/

It looks like mine will be in the low 6-ounce range - but my scale is not that accurate (all I have right now is a digital fish-weighing scale from the makers of STREN fishing line).

I built it stock and it was a learning experience. I know why they call it UHU glue now. I was always saying "you-hoo" are you dry yet?... "you-hoo" you're supposed to hold that spar to the leading edge!:D I lost patience with UHU after stuggling with the wing and started using hot glue.

My tail was really warped and I had to use the balsa triangle stock down both sides of the fuse with hot glue to straighten it out. I think that added some weight.

It was a learning experience and I can already see how I can make one better from my own foam and carbon.

I did like the control horns and other parts! Can you buy them seperately? Oh, and that TESA tape that came with the kit was much better than the packing tape I have used on my bigger foamies - good tack and pliable.

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

That sounds great almost as light as the axi the only down fall I can see is that it is not as easy to mount and no propsaver comes with it so you might end up weighing slightly more when done.

Mike Wiz 01-18-2005 03:07 PM

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

Almost as light? Well, I suppose your right if the AXI 2204/54 is weighed at 24.5 grams with the prop saver. The LensRC cd rom is 24 grams bare. As for mounting, the Lens can be mounted with some CA'ed thread and a few CF rods. Have a look here. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...80&postcount=2

Don't get me wrong. I think AXI is a very nice motor, but you can power 2 planes with LensRC motors for just over the price of one AXI 2204/54. That's pretty hard to beat and by the time you add the wood firewall and mounting screws for the AXI I doubt you're saving much if anything at all in the weight department.

how about a prop adapter for the lensrc motor ?? but you are correct realy you arnt saving much

Mike Wiz 01-18-2005 04:50 PM

RE: Help with indoor shocky spec.

Yep, you gotta buy a prop adaptor, to have equivelent money and weight. I already have a pile of those silly things, so I tend not to consider that in the price. It'll tell ya what. I've got a brand new Lens on order. I'll weigh everything up (motor, mount and adaptor) before I mount it in the new Shock Flyer F3A that I also have on order. ;)
Then we can compare weights more closely.
