The hobby has officially gone to 5-D.

Talk about finishing off with a bang!

That was sweet. I found my jaw down in my lap about 1/3 through. How do I do that?

with a variable pitch prop of cours!!!!:D theres a thread on R/C groups that tells you hoe to build your own using micro helicopter tail rotor parts.

Sweet thanks- I usually live on the groups must have missed it.

Now that is cool! Love that landing!!!!

i started out flying helis about a year ago, but now im in love w\ planes, and have daydreamed about doing something like that, if he uses cyclic pitch and stuff to act as elevater and rudder it would prolly work, idk if he is using that or not but i can definently see 5-D taking off, soon (hopefully) we will see some 40%ers doing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Haha, can you imagine the setup necessary to be able to push a 40% Carden, Aeroworks, etc... backwards from a dive like that. The setup would probably have to be massive to a point. I'm sure to turn a 32" prop with 8-10 degrees of pitch around all while it is still spinning would take a monster of a servo unless it is geared from the motor itself someway. Even in the video, the electric had a little difficulty, but a GIANT scale with variable pitch doing that would be simply awesome.

I do believe we are in the realm of 5-D Flying now.

Congratulations, that might be the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Fantastic, I had to watch it twice to fully appreciate what the aircraft was doing.

PHAT. :D Does anyone have a link to the RC groups thread, I would like to see a close up of his setup.

Here you are mike!

I'm working on the parts for 3 of them.

Thanks for the link Jim, those pics look awsome, and simple. I'm going to have to look into this a lot closer. I sent you a PM.

Michael :)

I can see it now- precision CNC's anodized constant speed hubs and CF blades... You wouldn't need THAT much torque to shift the blade pitch- if you have the blades mounted at their aerodynamic center thy should swing pretty easily. Full flying stabs and such are mounted that way, and they work great.

Cody

P.S. anyone with a machine shop should jump on this. The market is RIPE for the picking!

RE: 5-D Flying...

just make an enlargeed heli rotorhead. could you immagine it with cyclic too, being able to SUSTANE a nose-down hover!!! would be SICK

Breakstuff5050 01-28-2005 07:55 PM

RE: 5-D Flying...

it would be pretty weird though, you would have to have paddles.

Paddles are used for ailerons and elevator for helis, so on an airplane (during a nose down hover) it would act as rudder and elevator. You would also have to put them on a switch so you are not giving cyclic in puts during flight. I dont think it would be too hard to learn bc all you have to do is reverse whatever you need to make it easier.

RE: 5-D Flying...

well acctually, vario makes some padeless heads for scale use. they would acctually simplify the PC links of the head because there are no mixing arms exc. for the padles/blades....just 2 rods going strait up from the swash plate to the blade grips. as i said before they are meant for scale use so they they might not provide the profomance needed, but then again, we're only tryin to hover here:eek:

RE: 5-D Flying...

I dont think it would be too hard creating some kind of gadget to work for what we want, im not saying it will be easy though. I have an idea though, imagine a foamy flying backwards at level flight!!!!!!!! I guarantee this will be accomplished in the next year or so, possibly sooner! I'm just wondering how much manufacturers will charge us for one of this gadgets(that is whenever manufacturers get involved with 5-D). o so many questions and ideas!!!

Indoor 3D is complicated enough and now this. I swear my thumbs are going to go into a control overload!!!

And loving every minute of it :) :D

we're not just talkin about indoor. we're talkin about doing this with a 40%er!!!!!

that is a lot cleaner set up then i was imagining! But just wait until we start adding paddles! Then we are gonna feel like the heli guys.

I wonder what the heli guys think about this?

i am a heli guy....i think its freakin amazing!

im tryin to find some pics of the vario head im talking about, YOU DONT NEED PADDLES

Breakstuff5050 01-29-2005 11:11 AM

RE: 5-D Flying...

It would be nice not to need paddles, cuz it would be pretty dang ugly on an airplane!

I'm starting to wonder what is next. i cant really imagine anything else...6-D...?
