3D prop

What prop would be best on a 3W 100 for 3D, i have seen props where the tip is bent down, and shaped different to keep the engine cool but i can't sem to find it. Help!!!

RE: 3D prop

Hey Rcpimpin,

The props you are describing are called "Prince Props" from Prince Aircraft. They can be found at:

http://tntlandinggear.com/

The curved tip is not for cooling of the engine. They are used to concentrate the prop wash on the flying surfaces. Otherwise, a lot of the prop wash is lost to the rudder, elevators, and the most pronounced portion of the ailerons close to the fuselage.

Thanks a lot, i have been looking all over for them, I saw Baron Johnson w\ one when i was flying in Ocala FL, so i figured it would be something to look into. Thanks a lot!!!

The prince props are an excellent 3D prop I used to fly them alot acouple years ago. They have just about the best low end bite of any prop I have flown, However I did notice that the staight line flight suffered, and that is where the Mejzlick, Airmodels, and 3W props have the advantage. Since I fly alot of freestyle stuff where you are mixing precision flying with 3D I have settled on the 3W carbon props I feel they have the best of both worlds for precision or 3D! On the 3W 100 I would try a 3W 27x11 Carbon 2 blade, or if you like 3-Blades the 3W 26x11 is pretty good as well. Plus they are alot cheaper than the prince. Just my $.02 worth!

RE: 3D prop

right now im using a 26 x 10 MSC prop, and my 100 rips the sh*t out of it!!! But i have had a lot of difficulties lately w\ my engine that i just got straightened out, I think. So i want to make sure I have the best for my engine while in high alpha flight. What size is best for my 100?]\

Thanks,
Adam

RE: 3D prop

The MSC is a good prop I tried them when they first came out. Mike Clemmens makes a good product, they just didn't really suit my flying style. They have alot of bottom end bite, but as the airspeed increases I found like the Prince the bite dimminshed. As for size for a 2-blade on the 3W 100 I would start in the 27" range for diameter such as a 27x10. The thing that you have to remember about a 3W is that they are a very torquey engine you can prop them down alot more than a DA. A DA needs a bit more RPM to make the power. So don't relate performance to sound. The 3W likes the bigger props. Try a 27x10 wood first if you like it then you'll like the 3W 27x11 it is a bit more efficent so it is quieter and pulls harder.

I have a 27 x 10 bolly prop that I have yet to use on it, but the bolly prop is a lot less massive then the MSC 26 x 10, I actually think the MSC will load it more.

RE: 3D prop

Go ahead and try the Bolly just to see, prop selection is kinda a trial and error type deal to find what you like, the only thing I will say if it is a carbon Bolly (they make wood now too!) you will find that it will take a while for the engine to "spool" up and down because the Bolly is a solid carbon prop, so its heavy. I have always found that when you go up in diameter on a similar type prop it will load the engine more than if you go the same step up in pitch.

RE: 3D prop

It's a wood bolly prop, I got it from Gerhardt from aircradt international when he was helping me troubleshoot my engine, i think they use that prop as a break in prop, when i get time to play around i'll try it, bc right now i'm having ignition battery trouble, i have the old duralites (2 receiver batteries and ignition) and my sponsor had some extra but none of them work, but there is one more at the shop that he is sure will work. After that I can test different stuff, i just want to keep my engine cool in high alpha.
