Wanting to learn 3d. Any 3d planes hover with a OS46FX?
 

I just bought AFPD and i'm wanting to start learning 3d flying. One problem though... I have an OS46FX to use as an engine. I'm really not wanting to purchase a new engine just yet. Do you guys have any suggestions on any planes? I was looking at the OMP 48" katana. Would this engine do ok on this plane if I use a 12x4? What other kind of 3d planes would this engine work with?

It would work on the Katana profile or most other 46 sized profiles (Morris, OMP etc.) You will be able to pull out of a hover and learn 3D with these profiles... But where you will fall short power-wise is on a conventional design like the Funtana-40, U-Can-Do 46 etc.

Fun Air 40 from Jet hobbies in Canada. I think Chiefs sells them also. They cost about 100 dollars and fly great. They have a review here on RCU here is the link

There are quite a few airplanes that will work well on an OS 46 FX. One thing you can do is get a macs pipe for your engine. I have not noticed any real power increase but it does smooth out the mid range.

Do yourself a big favor and get a Tower muffler: (Tower # LXJB16). Another alternative is the Hobbico muffler fitting the same dimensions, stock # LXCLH6.

It sells for $15 and fits your OS FX (or the new AX) and you'll get 700 more rpm with virtually no increase in weight over a stock muffler. The only bad aspect I've found with that combo is you'll probably need to loc tite your carb screws and possibly the muffler ones, as they tend to vibrate out with the increased power.

Whatever plane you do get, I suggest keeping the total weight at or under 4.5 lbs. With your engine and this muffler you'll be able to hover at half stick with any 4" pitch prop your engine will swing (11x4 or close to that).

This assumes you're at sea level of course. Otherwise, I suggest moving to lower ground -- at least until global warming melts the polar ice caps.

I have one of these and really like it. It does inverted flat spins like a frisbee, hovers very well. I found out just a couple of weeks ago that it does great harriers with the low wing loading. That was a big surprize to see it harrier so well. I was doing ovals off the deck for quite a while (till I got tto low and broke a prop).

The profiles are by far the best 3D planes out there for the 46AX.

I flew a friends OMP Katana profile last week. It is OS .46 powered. He runs 20% fuel and a APC 12.25X3.75 prop. It is very capable. It was to windy to hover but I would guess 60% throttle will hang all day.

I started out with 3-D on a Spad 3-D. It only does a few things really good. harier/Hover/Flat spin. It will however teach your left thumb what to do. I built one for $15. I crashed it more than landed it. That's what happends when you tail touch on the first flight. The props get exspensive so a ran MA 12x4s. It was a great tool though. It teaches you to fly on prop wash.

try A modelteck magic extra.tower hobbies muffler,& a 12.25x3.75 prop & U will hover all day long!!! Not bad for a $120.00 plane

The Magic extra hovers well but the Magic 3D is much better for learning and is lighter--- Neither can compete with something like a Burrito or Morris the Knife-
