hovering advice needed
ok guys
been practicing hovering lately with my flip 3d and i dont seem to have a problem when hovering downwind, but as soon as i try to hover into the wind i get a wing rock (wobble)?? my setup for the flip is OS50sx + mini pipe 12.25x3.75 prop CG 150mm from LE maxed out contol throw anyone got any advice |
RE: hovering advice needed
I would guess it is just a weather vane effect,, I mean when you are hovering downwind the plane is hovering and is also moving with the wind (drifting),, and when you are going up againist the wind your plane is more responsive to the direction of the wind,,,

RE: hovering advice needed
:)Fly when the wind isn't blowing. Solves the problem the best.
Thanks, Barry |

I think it just takes praktice to get your controll corrections accurate and fast enough. I will do steady hover and torqueroll on a good day but sometimes it`s just hard to find that sweet balance. When you do there`s nothing cooler than hovering into the wind low down and do a tailtouch [8D]

RE: hovering advice needed
You could push a slight dilateral shape in the wing, so it stabilises upwind, but the adverse effect will occure going downwind.

RE: hovering advice needed
just WALL it into a hover against the wind then there will be no wingrock because it will go straight from horizontal to vert . then be prepared to gas it a few times to stabalize then find the sweet spot.. biggest problem ive found with hovering the flip in the wind is it is so light that during a torque roll when the left side hits the wind it will hang sideways like a high alpha Knife edge if you are a little late on the right rudder for compensation. I usually (in the wind) as the left side faces the wind have to give almost full right rudder to keep it straight up..Just takes practise;)

RE: hovering advice needed
Hovering into the wind will not give you a straight up and down hover like you are seeing when you are popping into a hover while moving downwind, especially with a small plane. Try this high, but sit on the elevator into the wind so you get no forward movement and no backward movement either working the throttle with respect to the elevator applied. You will get the hang of hovering much easier when you get throttle/elevator relationship down. The plane is very responsive while hovering into the wind, so expo may help with overcorrecting or overcontrolling.

RE: hovering advice needed
practice, practice, practice. Hovering in the wind always makes it a bit trickier but it'll make you a better pilot.

RE: hovering advice needed
Part of the problem is that you are a little underpowered with that engine. You need to get the power to weight up to really be able to put it where you want it. With that engine just wait for calm days and practice practice practice. You will get it. You shouldnt be getting any wingrock if you are vertical or near vertical. Sounds like you are in more of a harrier than a hover.

RE: hovering advice needed
thanks for all the advice guy's
i only get to fly once aweek so the rest of the time is spent on areofly pro,can hover all day long on the sim but when its for real i struggle.. well at least im hovering about 20ft up instead of 200ft like when i first started.. so practice and more practice sound like the answer thanks guys miskin |
RE: hovering advice needed
Try hovering not quite vertical. Try it with the nose just a touch into the wind. Once you get good at it, then start bringing it more vertical.

RE: hovering advice needed
prophanging in FMS is about as hopeless as getting wet in the desert. :)

RE: hovering advice needed
the southern x model for fms taught me how to hover my tribute

RE: hovering advice needed
I learned on a electric Ikarus shockflyer. If you can hover that squirrely little thing, you can hover anything...LOL
|
RE: hovering advice needed
Howmany ailerons and tailplains did you go through untill you finally mastered it? :) Because the ikarus shocky looks rather flimzy to me.
|
RE: hovering advice needed
try mixing some opposite flaperon to elevator. when elevator goes up both ailerons go down about 20% at max throw. this got rid of all my wingrock.
