We have all gone through it, or are going through it, or will go through it, it's called life. I went into the Army, got married, had kids, went to college, got a job and now I can just about fly what I want, when I want. The secret is, sticking with it, get through college no matter what, even if you have to give up flying for a little while. After college the world is yours for the taking, have fun, your only 15. Fly when ever you can and if you have a good support staff (mom and dad) get them flying so they can pay for more planes. Electric is a great way to keep flying, I fly a foamy every day, weather permitting, on my breaks at work and when I get home in the evenings and mornings before work. I wish they had foamies when I was in college, I would have flown all over campus.

lol... i tried to get my dad started for that reason so his planes would be mine... but he's too lazy to fly. i took him out like three times at the flying field everytime i ask if he wants to fly, he just mummur, and when i give him the controller, i can see that smile but he doesn't want to show it. he can fly around, all i got to do now is teach him how to land... then solo, then the planes would be MINE!!!

Now is the time to use your head and become what you want. Go to a college with AFROTC and take the recommended classes, grad as a 2nd louie and if lucky and a hard working student, a jet pilot, and engineer. If the foklks can not send you through, join the air force and go through OCS. There are ways to achieve your goals as long as you are a good student and know your stuff. Got to put the time in studdy now and through college to be someone the rest of your life, not a person looking back thinking I could have. Everything will work off math knowledge. If you are not good at math, work, work work, and get that way. I was a jock in high school and did not have to work at things. College first year was a nightmare as I did not have the math background. A frat wizz spent hours with me at night and pounded until the light came on. Ended up damn good, thanks to him. Started models in 1947, u control. Discovered girls 1949. Began pilot trainning and became a private pilot 1952, at 16 thanks to dad. Athletic scolarship to college in 54, went AFROTC. Quit in 56 to help my did in a business venture. Flew a 450 wasp powered "Howard" from California to Venezuelia, adventure in itself. After first stupid marriage, remairried a decent human. Got into RC as a hobby in 1968, and am still working on it in 2005 as a retired old man of 70. Willing to bet I can out fly you kiddo, but thats not the point. I have had a good life, a Piper, Cessna Skylane, flown Funks, Swifts, Howards, and one of the few in the US to fly a ME-109. Aircraft have been a lifelong love that I can take to the grave along with the good life made from hard work in the college years. Yea, went back and finished after several years in the US army, 101 airborne. I am not proud of being good at killing other humans, but, my country is here, I am here and my grandchildren are here, and my shop ceiling has 12 RC's ranging from Q-500's to Yak-54, Banshee, and gasser cap X. I have had to leave the hobby behind at times of my life, although it alwas is there waiting to give me the joy associated with kicking butt. Yea, the fires never go out if you work at it. You can have all of what life in the US can offer, but you must work at it now, and keep working at it until all of your goals are achieved. Then, you can have fun the rest of your life designing and being well paid to do what you love to do!
Best of luck, although there is little luck in becomming what you wnt to be, just short term work.

RE: Quiting this hobby?

Hey xoon

I too am doing the college and RC thing right now. I am also doing AFROTC, and flying real planes. I have my private check ride on ThursdayJ When I am in school I usually have a foamy and a couple of lipo packs set up for a little stress relief before the sun goes down. I find that it’s the only kind of RC flying I have time to do. I really wish I could get into flying pattern competitions but I just don’t have the time, space, or money. During the summer I try to get back to flying my Goldberg ultimate. Keep in mind that I pay for both my RC and my real flying, I sold my truck to pay for that and stepped down to a car that was a lot older. And I also wash airplanes during the summer to pick up some money. If you are serious about doing ROTC please contact me. I was in recruiting flight last semester so I can really help you out with questions. Anything that I cannot answer, I can forward to the cadre. As of right now the Air Force is really looking for engineers. If you can do well on the AFOQT you could qualify for a full ride, and a monthly lump sum of money to help pay for books and food. Last semester was my first in ROTC so I am non-contract but hopefully I can get a scholarship in a semester or two. I am not that competitive because I am Aviation Management. I am really trying to get competitive for a pilot slot. If you are seriously interested please email me at [email protected], Auburn is a great place to go to school and the Air Force detachment is one of the best in the nation. Have a nice day, and WAR EAGLE!

Cary

P.S. we have a decent football team too!!!!!!! screw the BCS!

i just had an interesting talk w/ my friend... just when i was into 3D... this talk is changing what i think about my future.

i'm only 15, and next year i'm goin to be a sophomore in high school. i got started last summer and now i can do almost all 3D trick in the book. then my friend was talking about what i want to be and where i'm going to go. i want to be an Aeronautical Engineer, but she said that w/ all the money i've spent on Airplanes, and all the time on airplanes... where am i going to go after high school? will this just be a hobby for my next three year then Pooff...it's gone? how am i going go to college? how am i going to live? money? ( for planes and college)

had anyone here got to quit the hobby b/c of school? ( college particularly) how do you deal w/ this? i bet there are a lot of people out there who experienced this... how do you fix the probem?

Just my thought that popped out of my head...
I quit RC about time I graduated from HS until a couple years after I got out of college. To be honest, between studying and college life I just had no time. When you factor in that I seemed to be constantly broke, it was a situation with only 1 outcome.

My dorm was too small for a plane or any of my trucks (really too small for me and someone else alone) and seemed to have a revolving door for inebriated people... it would have eventually been stepped on or something.

Whoever you were in high school is irrelevant; you get a new start here. Just the time alone to fly and maintain would have taken time away from this solicization oppurtunity that only comes along once in a lifetime.

I'm not saying that you have to quit, but it will sure be around in a year or so after school when you can REALLY afford it. Think of your school as an investment not only in life, but in RC as well, and you WILL be paid back when you return life in 4 to 6.

Everyone's life and situation are different, just don't miss out on things that can only happen while you're in school to take part in something that will be around for the rest of your life.
