GP Extra300 .40 3D
 

Has anyone had any success with the GP Extra .40 size and 3D with the OS Surpass 91?

This plane is great for IMAC and Pattern Maneuvers but there is no chance in hell its going to be any good at 3d unless you enlarge all the control surfaces a great deal. I fly my 2 with OS 61 2 strokes.

What do you think of the 91 Surpass engine on the GP Extra? Is it too much... it is only 3oz heavier than the OS61FX. I am trying to find the perfect plane for that engine.... and, how was the build? The wing sheeting seems very thin.

I think that I would give it a go. I gotta say I liked it when I had the .46AX on it abit better, it flew lighter. Go with you're .91 Surpass, and move the battery back under the canopy for balance. The build was good, The wing sheeting is thin and you have to be careful. I put a thumb through mine in the center secton a couple times. The plane is very strong when you have it all done. You might consider a Saito engine, perhaps the Saito .82. It is lighter than the .91 and has almost the same amount of power. I personally dont have any expirence with saitos, I'm just looking at the weigh and power difference.

I agree that the Saito82 is lighter.... I just have an extra 91 sitting on the shelf.... so you think the plane is strong enough for the 90? I would add rudder and might even use thicker wing sheeting.

Don't use thicker sheeting, your trying to keep it light now that you're gonna strap that big ole' 91 four banger on her.. Hell yeah, that thing will stand up to that .91 no problem, just use lots of epoxy when your building the front end/firewall. I built another rudder for my 2nd extra, attached is a pic showing it compared to the stock one.

Look good; would you add to the elevator size or leave them stock?

I would if I enlarged the aielerons, but I figure the plane is built like a rock anyway and it probably would never make a good 3D machine, it has lots of elevator right now to harrier, but the wing rock is REALLLLLY bad. It's a real fine IMAC/Pattern scale plane.
