I just picked up a GFS and wonder what will be the best engine choice. Any tips on building or modifications will be appreciated.

Freestyle Landing Gear

Contact Global Hobby and get the replacement gear for the ModelTech 40 sized Sukhoi. Part Number is 42019. It's only $10 and can be ordered direct or through your LHS. Much beefier, taller, and cooler looking. I called them and they gave me that tip when I was building mine. Apparently, people who are doing electric conversions are using it with 14" props.

The Sukhoi requires only that you widen the slot in the fuselage where the gear goes. The Sukhoi gear is a little wider front-to-back than the stock gear. Use the stock gear as a template to drill the mounting holes through the Sukhoi gear. I'm running a 13x6 APC on my YS63. The ground clearance is fine on grass with that gear and 13" prop. Mucho vertical as well as nice speed with that combo! I rarely need more than 35-40% throttle.

I have a freestyle on the way and plan on putting a Saito .72 in it. Will the stock wheel pants work on the sukhoi 40 landing gear?

RCAddiction 10-12-2002 10:29 PM

Hover

I'm told it hovers quite well with an OS 50. No idea why it won't on a healthy Irvine 53 unless it's not propped for thrust, or perhaps is operating at high altitude. Would probably be fine swinging something like the 12.25x3.75 funfly prop, or the 11.5x4.

Mine came in at 6lbs, 0 oz, including 1 oz of tailweight, extra large battery pack, and the YS63.

Yes, the stock wheel pants will work on the Sukhoi gear, but you'll have to drill the holes yourself for the anti-rotation screws. That's what I did.

Irvine

Note: I said a "healthy" Irvine. LOL!

I've also heard some mixed comments on the Irvine. Some seem really quite good and others not so hot. Glad the GMS is working out for you. Actually I'm kind of amazed at how much power people are putting into this plane! Flies awesome, though.

I cant beleve you guys are having problems hovering.ive got a sig se with 46fx at 5lbs and it pull from a hover like crazy.another guy at the field has one at 6 lbs with a 46fx and it pulls from a hover but not as good.is the freestyle really heavy or what?

RCAddiction 10-14-2002 01:16 AM

Freestyle

My Freestyle, as I said, is exactly 6lbs with a YS63. Would be lighter with a 46FX, but would not perform nearly as well. Mine hovers at quite a low throttle setting. Compared to the SE, it feels like it is a bit larger craft, so I don't feel it is excessively heavy.

Perhaps the problem Mark is experiencing is simply an engine that isn't performing as well as it should for this plane. Or perhaps a fuel flow problem and/or leaning out in vertical?

I have a Thunder Tiger .61GP in my Freestyle and have flown it around 4 times. The .61 only has 12 tanks of fuel through it and has been a disappointment. The engine runs fine but has lousy power. The plane weighs 5.59lbs dry. I saved weight using a Macs muffler (2.5oz) and a mini servo on the throttle. Still the .61 can only pull it slowly out of a hover. I will try another muffler or just put in a .61FX I have.

I should have used the .46pro I have. That would have been fine and the plane would only weigh 5.2lbs :D

I must have got a light one. I used a very accurate scale to weigh it.

I received mine yesterday and have to say so far I'm impressed with the quality of this ARF. I have a OS 50SX with a macs muffler or a Saito .72 I can put in it. Either one should do good, expecially if i can keep the weight as low as geoharry's.

Thanks, Dennis. I think it's really cool, and seems to get a lot of attention at the field. Here's a photo of the underside. I love it because it has excellent color scheme differentiation top vs. bottom for really good orientation in the sky. Too many ARF's seem to miss on this point.

Note: The only non stock items in the photo are

- $10 Sukhoi landing gear

- I tinted the canopy with RC Car windshield tint spray

- custom decal I made that says Bodhisattva.

BTW, "BO-DEE-SAHT- VAH" is from the Steely Dan song of the same name....my favorite music. My UltraStick 60 is named The Royal Scam!
