Adjustable CG device

I have been flying the Mayhem around for a couple months now and im having a ball with it. I find now that i want to move the cg back a bit for some things and forward for others. I would like to be able to do it in flite for hovering etc.... Got me thinking why couldnt you make a battery mount on a track with a servo or gear motor on it so you could just position a switch or slider to move the cg back and forth for different manovers? Might be overkill but I like some flight caracteristics of the forward positions and some of the more aft positions. Sounds like a good enough system but probably a reason i have not seen such a device yet. Guess im just to lazy to keep taking the wing off an moving the weight around.

When I saw your thread, while I was waiting for it to open the same procedure crossed my mine. It would definitly be interesting and scary if you hit the wrong switch at the wrong time. Might be able to set it up on a slider or knob and activate with another switch. Should be able to get quit a bit of adjustment out of your idea.

This is not a new idea. Back in the seventies the pattern flyers developed such a device. You may find an article on this in a old edition of the AMA magazine from that era.

FlyCatch, Do you know by chance how they accomplished their cg shift?

They used an electric worm drive mechanism. The weight box was affixed to this mechanism. I can't supply you with anymore details, that's all I remeber.

wow, I though of this while I was sitting in my boring latting class in school last year. I thought it would be a great device but who knows. Maybe the extra weight of the servo and the track would be too much but oh well. All the credit goes to you cause you started the thread;)

My 9 cap has heli sliders on the sides, seemed like the right kind of controll for such a devise. Would have to be made up from a lightweight plastic to be practical and weigh not a lot more than a standard servo or in that range to be of use.

As for the Idea, there are very few new ideas, just new applications for old ideas. I figured someone had built one before but with the popularity of the 3d stuff maybe its an idea that could be recyled for the application.

If you do the movable CG thing, make sure to adjust your gyro accordingly.

Im not up to speed on the gyro thing yet, still doing it all thumbs. That may be a winter project.
