Snap Rolls

Great job at the Nats, you had some of the best looking snap rolls I saw. I'm moving up to Intermediate, and would like to know how you perform your snap rolls. More specifically: How much elevator, and rudder your using in relation to normal low rates. It looked to me on some of your down lines, you'd bump the elevator first, and then add the other inputs. Could you go into your sequence for getting into a snap, and also getting out of one. Also your snap rolls were faster than most of the others I saw, What degree of alieron travel were you using?

Thank You Sir,
I like to think about snaps the same way full scale and models alike. However you CANNOT snap a model like full scale or you will break it. In full scale you must very abruptly pull or push the elevator to near its maximum extremity. After this, immediately induce autorotation through the use of rudder. In Model AIrplanes you must use Aileron to complete the snap. Model Aircrfat wing loading does not allow for the break like full scale. To finish the snap return the elevator to neutral as well as aileron and rudder. Sometimes you will need to go past neutral to get a clean exit. This is totally dependent on speed.

Rates for snaps:
Pattern Rates

AIL 35 degrees
ELEV 25 degrees
Rudder 30 degrees


I only fly with 2 rates. One for Pattern and the other for 3D with no CG change. It simplifies things immensely, but you have to learn to fly the airplane when it is this touchy.

I did'nt realize that you flew with such high rates for precision, what kind of expo are you using?

And to be more specific on the snaps: In intermediate I have a 45 degree upline positive snap, and also a 45 degree downline negative snap, at what point in the snap would you start coming out of elevator and rudder.

EXPO is around 25-40 % for all rates except High rate elev-85%.
Come out of the Elev and rudder as soon as you think you can get away with it. This is the key. Long enough to show Autorotation and short enough to get the clean exit. This part is very difficult. It takes years to figure this one out. In fact, I dont think I have even figured this out 100%.
