H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
I am putting together a H9 Twist 40. I am looking for recomendations on the engine and prop to use. I know a lot of you are 4 stroke fans, but I want to stick with a 2 stroke, as I'm not looking to switch or stock other fuels. So what do you recomend, and why?

Hi Rap. The Twist is a little on the heavy side to start with but OK.. EVERYONE in our club has 4 strokes on them and are VERY limited on what the plane can do... I put off building mine for 9 months because I THOUGHT the plane had problems... I went in a different direction and installed on OS46ax on the VERY front of the mounts, installed the battery UNDER the tank and added NO weight.. ( a little tail heavy but the way I like it ) It will do an inverted flat spin better than any plane I have ever seen.. I will hover and pull out slowly but ONLY with a Zinger 12x4 prop.. 160 flights on the plane now and have had a blast with it as it will out perform all the higher cost 4 strokes.. I like 4 strokes but I do get tired of people saying that you MUST use 4 strokes to get good 3d flying... |
RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
I just got mine two weeks ago. I have a 46nt Evolution with moose pipe and it's a blast. I tried diff. props and i'm sticking with the APC 12.25 x 3.75. I'm new in this hobby about a month a half. From a hanger 9 trainer to the twist it's a fun fly.

RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
I had both an Evo .46 and the AX on mine. It also does a great waterfall or forward flip. With spoilers it is tighter, but tends to over rotate on recovery. Without spoilers it is larger, but stops on a dime. The flip is so predictable you can do them down low easily.
As Walt said, it's a flat spinning fool. |
RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
Im just putting together my twist and was wondering if there are any clearance issues with that 12X4 prop on this plane with the os 46.
Thanks Chris |
RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
Nubie, Shouldn't be a problem with that size prop. I have a Saito 72 on mine with a 13x4w. Plenty of clearance. I'll have to say that so far my Saito hasn't worked all that well on this plane so I'm glad to see that others have had good success with the 2 strokes mentioned. I may have to switch......[:-]

I have a magnum 52xls with an apc 12x4 on my twist - plenty of clearance with stock gear.

RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
Cool I have to go get the rest of my goodies at the LHS tomorrow Ill pick up a 12X4 prop then so I can give a shot when its done I do have a 11X5 for the os too would it be a alright prop for this plane and engine combo too. Sorry about the question still learning.
Thank You Chris |
RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
I have the os 70 SII on mine with an apc 14x4w, works better than the OS 46 AX with 12x4. YS 63 or saito82 would be other great choices. I have saito 82 on my Katana GS and it is simply awesome.

RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
Nubie 1 - Yes the 11x5 works real well, I prefer the 12x4 then the 12.25x 3.75 then the 11x5 in that order--- But it is fine on the 46 -
Someone asked what 2 cycle for this airplane- I really like the Irvine-53 and Webra-50GT |
RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
In my experience, a plastic 12x4 prop is a little on the big side for a 46. A wooden Zinger 12x4 is lighter and will let the engine rev higer. I use APC 12x4 and Magnum 52 on similar planes. I like the Magnum because it is a lot cheaper (I crash a lot), and more powerful than 46. I have enough engine experience to tune it correctly. I thought I was the only guy still using 2 strokes. If I ever quit crashing, or win the lottery, I might buy a 4 stroke, but I doubt it.

I also use the OS .46 AX and a 12 x 4 prop and have been very happy with it. I few weeks ago, I removed the baffle out off the square shaped muffler and gained a noticeable amount of power. I then went to an 11 x 6 airscrew prop and now deem this the best combination of engine and prop I have ever tried on this plane. The extra power allows it to easily hover on this prop and the extra top end speed is great for knife-edge flight.

I have a OS 50 SX on mine, with a APC 12.25 x 3.75. It is absolutely ballistic.

RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
Hovering with an 11x6 seems un-natural--- try a 12x4
The OS-50SX is with the Irvine-53 and Webra-50GT.... TONS of power! |
RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
Power is what I'm looking for here. And the goal for this plane is 3D. The motor needs power and torque. I'd like to be able to hover and climb out (not just sort of be able to almost climb out). So odds are, the 46 size motors are out. A 50ish size motor is probably more what I want. Sounds like a 12X4 prop is the way to go. Thanks for the advise so far.

RE: H9 Twist 40 engine and prop choice???
what spinners are you guys using? my dubro spinner doesnt fit with a 12.25x3.75 prop....should i just cut it to fit? by the way its ona os .50 sx more power than i need but hey, its fun!
