Ok my brison 3.2 needs a new plug i think. it was gurgilling alot and sounded like it was going to shut off through the last flight. it has a Bosch R10 plug in it is that right and where do i get one? i'd hate to lose my ultimate over a bad plug.

OH yes and my own Moki 210...... thats a glow engine

Pull the plug out and look at the color, if it's dark then you are too rich which is what it sounds like. If it's a medium dark (slightly rich) to light tan, then the mixture is correct. You can also just clean the plug while you have it out. About the only time you really need to replace the plug is if the electrodes are worn. Also, is it gurgling when the plane is in a certain attitude. My Brison 3.2 needed the vent tube fix because in certain maneuvers, then engine would go rich. If you can pull the plug right after running it and post a pick, that would certainly help us help you |

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
ok you guys I just had to have one of these planes after reading this thread and drooling over the advertising
I went to LHS and got one for $369 I would like some input from you guys on what mods are needed. I will do the CF strip laminated to the wing joiners and use flat pinned hinges glued in with pacer hinge glue. I have read most if not all of this thread, great info but not sure about the landing gear to mod or not to mod. feel free to give me your ideas of the best setup you would do if you did it over. I will be going gas for sure, A first for me. what do you guys think of the evolution 45? also servos, power box or no power box nessasary. I read maudib's setup using A voltage Reg. with two batt leads instad of A power box that sounded like A great setup as always cost is an issue but I dont want to lose A great plane for being cheap. |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Can somebody confirm the monokote colors for me? Everything online and in the manual says it's Missile Red and Saphire Blue, but I have two rolls of Missile Red and it's definitely not the same. Is it maybe True Red?
I also have some Insignia Blue which doesn't match, so the Saphire Blue is probably correct. My LHS doesn't have True Red or Saphire Blue, so I'll have to order some and I want to make sure before I buy. Thanks, scott |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
The blue is Saphire Blue (TOPQ0226).

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Yeah, the red is definetely not missle red, I found that out after an 1.5 hour round trip to the hobby store, haha. Don't know what color it really is, I got creative with white where I needed to repair it instead.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Try some of the econo coat colors, when I needed to color match one of their arfs before, I found that the econo coat was dead on. Worth a try..

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Hey folks, How did the lateral balance come out for you guys that are running the DA50... I put the ignition battery (1800 mAh NoBS Nicad) on the left side of the motor box and the ignition module or the right side. By lefting the plane carefully by the spinner, I'm needing 1.8 oz on the right wing tip to balance out.
Inside should be as close as I can get. Receiver in the middle with a 2400 mAh Fromeco Li-on on each side of it. guess I can try moving the ignition battery to the right side and see how much help that is, But I was curious how you other folks made out and if any of you had to fudge stuff around to balance out laterally. thanks in advance BP |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Try the lateral balance on your Ulti like this. Instead of lifting by the spinner, pick the front of the plane up by the tip of the prop when vertical. Make sure that the engine is not on the compression stroke or the piston is not at TDC.
I did not have to add any weight at all. The balance, both lateral and at cg was perfect. |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
First post in this forum. I just picked up my Ultimate 160 yesterday. What a beautiful box of parts that I can turn into an airplane. I have been reading all the posts here. There is a lot of great info to obsorb. I am up to page 76. It will take me a few more days to read the rest. All I have for engines are a Quadra 42 and a Tartan twin EI (44cc) Both are just under 4 pounds. I will go with the tartan for now until I can get a better engine. I have learned a lot reading your posts and will use this info to my advantage. Thanks to all for your valuable information.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Nitromark, that's my new plane exactly ! Just maidened two weeks ago and have put 3 flights on it so far. Tremendous power and good combination so far ....
I have it on DX7 w/4 LiIon 2400 batteries (Fromeco) two on servos (all Hitec 5955 TG's) one on Rx one on ignition - all w/regulators. Am using I4C power box. CG was perfect when I was all done . Took off w/one click of aileron trim and one of elevator. Matchbox on elevator and bottom wing on Aux1 channel on DX7 . Have Jomar optical kill switch but haven't gotten it to work yet ...some kind of wiring problem I'm sure. Haven't done a lot yet but so far it flies absolutely beautifully ! Knife edge is easy, aileron roll rate is ridiculously fast even on low rates . Engine is still rich but am going to lean it a tiny bit Sat. Am flying on Lawn Boy for 5 gals. so it spits out a tiny bit of black soot ! Landing was easiest I have ever had on ANY plane for 50years ! All three flights it just eased in for perfect landing w/ no bad quirks at all - amazing to me ! I am nowhere near full power potential as am just beginning breakin - rpms only at under 5000 thus far . Engine runs beautifully - of course ! 22/8 wood prop but will trade up to 22/8 Mezjek (sp) when broken in. I'll try and post a pix next week as I have a beautiful trim scheme I got from David Johnson using "bling" vinyl - georgeous.... |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Have been reading through posts and am a bit concerned about my wings. I did not reinforce wing joiners when I built it - is there anything I can do now short of building wings over again? Anybody tried to modify them after they were built?
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Thanks IFly;
picking it up by the prop as you suggested dropped the lateral imbalance down to about .6 onces instead of 1.8 onces. I can try moving the ignition battery to the other side and see if that helps. In either case .6 oz will be much easier to resolve then the 1.8oz issues. This thread is 'The Bee's Knees!' Bob P |

I found for this plane either the Mezjlik props, the PT Model from TBM or the best do far was a 22B Vess on a 50cc engine. The Vess does load the engine a bit but gives the control surfaces was more airflow, plus they do not look to bad :D |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I'm ready to pull the trigger on my own Ultimate, but I'm a bit worried about the "folding wings in flight" mentioned here. Where can I read about it? Is there an easy fix? I'm planning on using a brison 3.2 on mine, with appropriate servos and radio. Been through a bunch of that 'monster" thread on the Ultimate, but can't find anything about the fix for the wing problem, if it exists.
thanks! mcmike |

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Sorry Bubba, I am using DA50R .. I know it is slow but am trying to sneak up on full bore giving engine plenty of time to break-in....I'm probably too conservative but haven't done any fix on wing problem yet ...
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
You could remove the covering near the center sections, and glass them to add some strength. you could also include flying wires between the wings on each side like many full scale bipes. If done correctly, it would add significant strength.

On a glow engine running it sloppy rich works well, on gas it could actually cause problems. Again I mean no disrespect at all |

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Today's question??? Why is it that you can run a weedeater engine, a chainsaw, a leafblower and numerous other implements operated by 2 cycle engines and never clean it, never change the plug until it gets so fouled it won't run, never clean the air filter, throw it around like it was yesterdays newspaper, and it just runs and runs without missing a single beat, but take the same engine and put a prop on it and it wouldn't run for crap?? [sm=biggrin.gif]
RMFLYFISH...you are welcome. Thats what we are here for...to share ideas and tricks. [sm=idea.gif] |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Not sure what this has to do with the Ultimate, but I'll play along anyway.... I think you'd be surprised at what brands of 'model' engines are simply chainsaw cylinders and cranks, some with fancy machined or cast cases, some with the stock ones. They're doing just fine with props on them :)
It was said recently that we should worry more about crashing our planes, than replacing parts in our gas engines. If they are even half way taken care of, they will outlast us. and to keep this related to the Ultimate 1.60....I'm one of those with a garden equipment chainsaw engine in mine :) |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Ben,
Could it be that weedeaters, leaf blowers and some chainsaws are far less expensive that some of the engines we pay for. At least that's how I look at it I know when I pay $600 or more for my engines I take extra good care of them and BTW, I have the best running weedeater and leaf blower on the block :D How do you think I taught myself to tune a 2 stroke gas engine ;) I can't argue your point though. My weedeater is quite old and I'm not very careful about the oil mix let alone the brand being used. My blower is fairly new and it gets about the same treatment as my weedeater. Could you imagine a 100cc weedeater or a 150cc leaf blower [X(] or even a 4 cylinder 200cc chainsaw |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well, my question was mainly just to poke a little fun at the way we DO take care of our hobby engines. My point is that, I, especially take better care of my Brison(s) and my Fuji better than I do my garden type engines, but they just keep running right along regardless with only a hint of maintenance.
Bill, Speaking of the 4 cylinder chainsaw, do you remember "Tim The Toolman Taylor" and his Chevy powered riding mower? My Ultimate and my Skybolt are on charge for tomorrow. Temps are supposed to be in the 80's with little wind. [sm=tongue_smile.gif] There will probably be so many guys wanting to fly that we will have to draw numbers. Kinda sad note here though. I am the only one that is flying bipes at our site now. All the others (bipes) have been taken away by the law of gravity. I am knocking on wood. |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Yea, my first sentence was a little serious then it dawned on me that you were joking so hence the rest of the post
Depending on who you listen to we are suppose to either have rain all day, or only in the AM or on and off all day with temps in the mid 60's, Same for Sunday so MAYBE I'll get to fly. In any case, the Ulti and 2.3m are all charged and ready to rock |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
:)In lumberjack competitions the best use 500cc single cylinder motorcycle (converted) engines. Now...that engine would be interesting on an airplane....wouldn't it?
Thanks barry |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
ok. just did it. Dropped the hammer on a GP Ultimate just a minute or two ago. Should be here by Tuesday (yeah, sometimes it's nice living only about a hundred miles from Tower). She's gonna get a Brison 3.2, all Hitec 5645's, Futaba rcvr. I plan on beefing up the joiners, as suggested, possibly adding some wires to it. Any other good suggestions?

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I wonder what size the DA 6 cylinder they did a couple of years back was. If you saw the Wildberry Tucson Shootout DVD's they showed a pic of it
I know 3W makes a 324cc. It's on the 75 pound Edge540 that is on Bill Hempel's web site under video's |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
mcmike,
just what was listed previously in the links. The rest is more personal preference. You should be fine on the 5645's as long as you use 6 volt. You definitely want to be a bit overkill and the Brison 3.2 couled with either a MSC22x8 (noisy) or a Vess 22B (very quiet) will make the thing a 3d monster, even at 16lbs it will not fly like it's 16lbs and mine is heavier than most One other thing to mention is using different hinges (pin type) for the elevators but using them everywhere is not a bad thing. I'm on plane #2 and did not use the pinned ones on either one and so far (knock on balsa) I've been lucky and I hammer mine into walls and serious KE spins so the elevators take a pretty good beating We also posted how to balance it without the wings on which makes it tons easier, did you catch that? |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
None taken, Bubba ! This is the first real expensive gasser I have ever had so I welcome all the input I can get . I'll lean the carb tomorrow till I get peak rpm ... I sure don't want to cause problems on engine !
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I've got a vess ordered, and will go 6 volt with 5945's (stupid fingers!) so I''ll have plenty of servos. I missed the balancing without the wing bit. but that's a trick I've used for years with bipes. Get a good balance point with the wings on, take 'em off, see where it is then and use that as a 'base point'. I'll see if I can find the post tho...
thanks! mcmike |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
mcmike,
after you get it all assembles, put on the carrying handle (there is one in the kit that you make)measure anywhere from 1 inch to 1.5 inches from the back bolt. That range is your balance. I'll see if I can find the posts I found the post http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4855801 |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Bill, I think we figured out 1.25" forward from the rear cabane bolt was a good, solid, non-pitching setup....the freakin' search function here is SOOOOO Lame...
