Anyone know anything about cedar hobbies 3D Witch? I have found one new that a guy is selling but wasnt sure how they flew compared to say a OMP 540 Edge profile or the Katana 46. Anyone running the OMP planes with 46 AX's in them? is it enough engine to pull it or is it lacking? There is a guy in the club flying this combo but he isnt putting the plane into much 3D maneuvers to be able to tell if the engine is strong enough.
Also anyone able to tell me the difference between the OMP edge 540 and the Katana 46? seems the edge/ yak is like 20 bucks more and just a little shorter wingspan and fuse length.....Any idea if there is something else different im not picking up on? |
RE: now a
Well all the OMP planes are different animals all together. The Cedar witch I don't want to say much about because of a previous incident here on RCU involving me and a distributer of them. To say the least the issue was resolved and in more ways than one I am glad we don't see those things around here anymore. The quality of those planes were not great but I guess in the same breath one should consider the price involved. Now a simple note to make is that you don't see guys posting videos or anything of them and that should say something about the plane already. I haven't flown one myself but I have seen them in person. I just don't think it's going to get anywhere near a OMP plane flight performance wise. If you're serious about 3D get something that's proven to work many times over rather and avoid extra hassles.
The OMP Edge/Yak/Katana reviews have been posted too many a times so a quick search should yield you hours of endless reading. I'll try to sum it up quickly. OMP 47" Edge: The best 3D trainer out there today. Super silly stable in hovers/harriers etc and very forgiving. The compromise is the agility in the air. Still does awesome flat spins etc. OMP 47" Yak: Very stable just like it's brother the Edge but a little more loose in the air. (By the way I fly one currently). This one has awesome rudder authority and will do pinwheels with great ease. Very manuverable little plane and awesome at spins be it flat/knife edge or just wacky. Does great upright/inverted/rolling harriers too. High alpha knife edge is a breeze with all the tail authority. Tight knife edge loops you name it. Compromise is you have to be a little more awake than with the Edge on this plane. Katana: Well something like the Yak but with different handling. (I haven't flown the Edge or the Katana ARF [I own the kit version] but I watched lotsa videos and read alot). When I say something like the Yak I mean it's also a little more loose in the air and not quite as super stable. Great Knife edge characteristics and will also do it all. Flat spins/tumbles/waterfalls you name it but not quite a pinwheel like the Yak. If you need more help let me know. |
RE: now a
Witch 3d = run very fast very far. Reason not many are flying looks like there made out of saw dust and hot glue. The aileron servo trays are glued to the top sheeting of the wing. No hardwood for servo screws. Fuse is flexes and wavy. Landing gear is for a two legged trainer. And covered with off brand chinacote A 1/4 inch wing gap.
Guy that sells them has no clue about a airplane , let alone fixing a problem. He has about 5 accounts on here. Just quit sending me Pm's a couple months , ago trying to get me to praise them. Made a yahoo account with my screen name , emailing people as me selling stuff. A real piece of work. Anything from OMP rocks |

Hey thanks alot guys......I was about to jump on that 3d witch based mainly on price......glad yall clarified it. Hey spacy what engine are you running on your yak? I have a 46 ax laying around and was gonna be putting it in my new profile...this engine swinging a 11.75x3.75 is this enough for this plane you think?
I was gonna get the edge 540 or the katana......not sure which one yet the katana is a little more affordable but i really like the looks of the edge. I also saw a couple planes today at my local shop one was the goldberg extreme 3d 330 and the other i believe was the extreme 3d 540......any experience with these? The 330 was right in my price range seemed to be a good plane and i believe it was a little lighter at 4.5 poounds then the omps. |
RE: now a
I can't help you much on the Goldberg ARFs but you can do a search on those as well in the profile forums. Lots of people discussing them there but I'm gonna sound like a broken record here but go for a OMP plane. The OMP yak and edge both come out at 4lbs! I don't think the Goldberg stuff is really all their made out to be. I will agree on one thing though they both look great but I just haven't seen any videos of it really DOD doing all the high alpha stuff like the OMP profiles. Yes I am probably one of OMP's biggest fans and I'll admit it. Thing is just with the 5 planes I already got from them not a single one didn't do all the 3D stuff great.
On my little Yak I use a OS .50 SX with a APC 12.25X3.75Wide. It has bags of power and I fly at 5000feet above sea level. Now on my 46" Katana P kit (The one in my avitar) I use a OS .46 FX with the same prop and it's also a great match. I've now added the little .46 tower mufflers to the all the engines and the Katana loves the 500odd RPM more. It's a cheap and effective mod to do and worth it if you want a 3D animal. I am going to put another .46 FX in the OMP Boxxer I am currently building. I have yet to fly the Yak with the tower muffler so nothing to report there. Your engine will do the job just great as is too and well at a later stage you could consider dropping $15 odd and get a tower muffler for it. You should be able to swing a APC 12.25X3.75 wide prop on that motor easily. The prop you got there sounds fine though too. The AX is supposed to be a little more high performance than the old FX series so you are set in my eyes. |
RE: now a
