U-Can-Do 3D .46 Engine Question
 

I am very interested in purchasing the U-Can-Do 3D .46, but I want it to have enough power. I have always had 2 stroke engines and want to get four strokes. The ARF recommends a .52-.70 4 stroke. Can I go bigger, like a O.S .91 II Surpass or a Saito 100, and if so, what prop is recommended. Thanks a bunch.

you know neverquit, the best engine and prob most will agree is the saito 82, there are other choices but i think this is the best, and is the biggest that will mount safely in the stock mount and will give you what you want, i have a 100 in mine and love it but it takes a lot of extra work:D come visit the ucd46 gang on the 46 thread and you can get all kinds of info.click on this.....

i was about to buy the SAITO 100 for the u can do as my next plane.. but looking at the money i have i have decided to go for the MAGNUM 91 as my FIRST FOUR STROKES... the reason why is they are lighter than TT engine and a tad heavier than SAITO.. and they have GREAT service. and i'm sure this combo would give it unlimited vertical! (i hope so!) so if you are running low on money get a cheap 4 strokes like the MAGNUM 91. hope this helps, and come over to the U CAN DO 46 thread.. you will get a lot of questions answered there

I've have a 46 UCD powered with a Saito 100 for over a year now. The Saito 82 is plenty of power but after watching one fly with a 100 I had to have one and never looked back. You'll have unlimited vertical and you can never get behind the power curve no matter what attitude, altitude or speed. I fly with a APC 15 x 4" prop. In reality you only use all the power is to show off vertical climbs. The plane is made for slow flight so I have to be careful with the throttle. This is my 2nd Saito 100 and they are a great engine. it has a 3 year warantee and they stand behind it. No questions asked.

I'll second the MAgnum .91 I think I am running a 15x4 on mine. It does have unlimited vertical and I actually used the stock mount. Fits better and I have plenty of room on the mount so its not a safety concern that I have seen.

The other thing I have done is strip all the covering off and recover the plane. I had some hangar rash to repair and got a wild hair. I think it saved me some weight, we shall see.

sorry Tom, your engine probley worked well in that mount, i should have worded it that the" largest saito that would safly mount" we tried to mount a saito 91 in the small mount and it really didnt look safe, thats what i really meant:)

Thanks so much for the advise. I might go for the Magnum .91. I really don't want the hassle of rigging the motor mount. Who sells the magnum. I'll check out the ucd46 forum. Thanks again guys.

Cool thanks, I am a member. Love that free shipping. I went to the UCD forum, and I am reading that I will need to change the motor mount that comes with plane if I get the magnum .91. Is this right or can I use the motor mount that comes with it.

I have the Mag. 91 in mine and used the mount provided. I mounted mine at 90 deg after having problems inverted. You must also beef up the landing gear mount. It WILL break out if you don't.

gjeffers its all good, I hope that didn't come across as a slam, it was never intended as that.
I didn't have a problem with the Magnum running inverted, but I have looped the incoming line and made it a bit longer so I don't see a flooding issue.

Good luck with the combo, you will not be dissapointed.

I suggest a .91 Thunder Tiger, Magnum, or Saito. I think they are all good brands. I am running a Thunder Tiger .91 4-stroke on my UCD .46, and it delivers plenty of power. If you go with a .91, I recommend putting a 13X7 APC prop on it. That seems to pull mine around great.

SAITO 82 best and only choice, no mount modification at all, whieghs about as much as most the 50 size 2 stroke motors.
I ran one on my funtana 40 and my harrier 46, awsome motor

magnum 91RFS and 15x4W APC in mine. Silly power.
Used a Dave Brown nylon mount and redrilled blind nuts
Now a word from the "Bonehead move of the month" club
One word of advice. Always check throws AND direction after copying one plane to another!
Duped my Funtana 40 program to the U-Can-Do on my 9CAFS. Went and set throws, but never
actually looked at direction. Took of with ailerons revered and tumbled it right on takeoff on maiden.
Thankfully my Dad was bored and likes putting humpty dumpty back together. About a foot behind the wing mount
was dertroyed, as was front wing block/gear mount. Back together now and flys well
