Help with Modeltech 3-D Magic ARF
 

Hi,
I bought a used Magic at our swap meeti, BBQ and fun fly today in the san fernando valley. The plane came with everything but a reciever. Servos and OS 46 included. Low milage. He said about 30 flights. It looks great. I am way excited. Here is my question. Does anyone have the CG and or the recomended throws for this plane? It did not come with any instructions. Any help would be great. The would be my back up plane to my second plane the great planes space walker. The space walker is grounded right now because the saito 100s front bearing has gone out in only 69 flights!~( I need some magic help! I looked all over but global did not have the PDF or any info for this plane. I have been reading the other Magic thread but did not want to hi-jack someones thread.

Hi Joe,
This plane is alot of fun.You should enjoy it.The CG is 4 1/8 inches back from leading edge.The throws are as follows.

Ailerons: low rate-1 inch each way high rate- 1 3/8 each way

Elevator: same as ailerons for low and high rates

Rudder: low rate-3 1/8 each way high rate-4 1/4 each way


Thats right from the manual.They also suggest -30% expo on low rates and -35% expo on high rates.If you have expo on your radio.
I have my ailerons and elevator setup with a little more throw than they suggest.1 1/2 on low and 2 on high.You might not need it,but it doesn't hurt to have it.I have a TT 46 pro on mine spinning an 11x4 prop.Good luck.

I have a APC 12.25 X 3.75 prop on it now. I think it might be OK. I have not had a 2 stroke so I don't know what to expect for power. Again thanks very much for the info I'm really looking forward to checking this plane out.

Here's a somewhat dumb question. Did you install pegs and wing bolts or use rubber bands? If rubber bands then how many? I'd figure about 6 per side? :)

There is some lead on the tail that bugs be pretty bad. I will remove it and move the battery back. How did you hold the battery in place back there? Just foam?
I really hate the sounds of 2 strokes but I have heard good things about the OS 46FX and look forward to its power. It may turn into a Saito 72 :D .
Thanks for the rubber band advice. I will use 8 on each side like you recomend.

I am using a square pack shoved onto the tray next to the throttle servo. I couldn't squeeeze it into the back behind the bulkhead. I have a HUGE chunk of lead on the tail - maybe 2oz or more - and the CG is well behind 5" from the LE .

I have the $18 replacement carbon fiber gear from Moose , taking even more weight off the nose. My engine is an old el-cheapo Chinese ball bearing ASP .46 , servos are standard and I used all the ARF pull-pull hardware.

This plane flies great. It will take off in about a plane length, land at your feet and do the all the spin & 3D manuevers unbelievably.

Thank you so much for the photos. That is about where I thought you described it. It was a nice day today. I flew it 5 times. Very twitchy but I had fun. On the the 5th flight the elevator suddenly adjusted it self centered at 25% up. I gave the controls to my friend/instructor and he got it down but barely. I think it is the reciever because a while later it magically healed it self and was back at 0% centered. Weird. I just got the reciever, its a hiTec supreem and was recommended by a few as a good one. It just might be bad.

Thanks to you for the inputs and CG. As I get more comfortable I'll move the CG back for more control effects. This is a very fun plane! ;)

Put on a mouse can muffler and a 12.25 x 3.25 APC prop. The performance difference will be unreal. As an added bonus the mouse can muffler only weighs a little over 2 oz.

Thanks, that might be a fun project. I got another question. What fuel tank size are you guys running in the Magic? The one that came with is very small. I got max. about 6 min. per tank. Is that it? I'm used to flying for at least 12 min. Maybe I should just drag my fuel to the flight line with me!~(.

Wow, Thanks. I will practice better managment and see where that gets. I think the fuel tank I have says 190cc on it. I'll be at the store this AM and see what else might fit in it. I did some take-offs from the grass that were awesome ROGs and also from the run way were very easy. Thanks again,

Today was really great. Throttle management 101, got my flight time up to 12 min. but that is about to dead stick there so I set it up for 11 min. Easy to land and easy to dead stick land too. I sure wish I had a four stroke on the front of it though. The sound of that os 46fx is weird. Fun, fun, fun and again fun plane!. Thanks for all your help.
