Rolling Harrier Hints n Tips
 

Hi guys,

I was trying to practice some rolling harriers with my Fliton Jumping Jack. My aileron deflections are about 45-50' on the 3D mode. Well it starts really smoothly and relativelly fast to the harrier roll, bus as speed is reduced that kind of smoothness goes away.

I know that the trick is to play with throttle by giving bursts this is what I do on the sim and with my IC engine models to retain constant roll rate. However in this case it seems that throttle bursts are not very effective. Those ailerons act as air breaks for sure would you recommend to reduce the deflections a little bit?

Any recommendations are more than wellcome.

I suggest starting with using only elevator first to work on getting your timing down. And if your roll rate is too fast take some aileron out. I have a rolling harrier setting where it is agressive tail movements and not so much aileron. If you use only elevator though for practice you can work on throttle timing as well and not add another element (rudder) to the equasion. Hopefully you also notice your elevator timing also steers the plane. Once you have this start adding your rudder and watch how it all smooths out.

Thanks! I'll give it a try, I'll reduce the ailieron throws and try to increase the elevator throw a bit more, if I find a larger servo arm.

Another question on rolling harriers. Assume you have set spoileron mix for both upright and inverted. During the harrier roll do you have the mix activated or not?

Thanks but I have already got it/them. As I wrote I know the rolling harrier basics, I just make some questions beyond the instructional videos, articles etc.

The other day I was reading an article by Quique Somenzini on Model Airplane News covering the rolling harrier basics. He recommends very large aileron throws. Well this setting does not work for this particular plane. It seems that there are no rules in 3D it is a matter of trial and error and pilot skill/experience. IMO guidelines are there but can not be completely valid for every 3D plane.

Any opinions on the spoileron mix? Do you have it on or off during the harrier roll?

Good info! I started out using rudder correction only. I also found it easier to do them downwind with a little more throttle. Upwind it has tendency to climb if you're a little hot on the throttle. My Matrix 40 would do nice rolling harriers using rudder correction only whereas my Funtana 40 needs both rudder and elevator.

Rolling harriers (for me) have been the most challenging 3D manuever. They are extremely addicting as well.. :D
